    fermenting adjusting mash levels

I have 3 pepper mashes going right now.  They are in mason jars with airlocks on them.  All three of them are very active (yogurt whey starter, and they have onion and garlic in the mash) and the mash "juice" is coming up through the airlock and mixing into the airlock fluid (I used vodka...

When to start using a fan

This year I want to try using a small fan on my seedlings to see if it helps make them thicker/healthier. I just started moving some seedlings from the tray to solo cups. Should I give them some time to adjust to being in the solo cups and under the new lights, or is it okay to start up the...

    water Drip irrigation

I've worked on residential irrigation systems in Massachusetts for about 6 "seasons" and they are a great way to get water to plants (in ground or in containers) without soaking the foliage/fruit of the plant. I would just plant in rows, making sure that plants with different water needs are in...

    Pepper Maggots

I've come to the realization that I'm going to lose the bulk of my peppers this year, and it sucks. I had an opportunity to use a family member's empty garden this season, and quickly filled it up. In one of the rows, I planted the bulk of my pepper plants. Nothing fancy, just some hot...

pics Garden pics "hot day in Michigan"

Looking good. We are getting 2 days of 95+ heat, starting tomorrow. I'm actually excited because I think it will help my peppers, which have only been in the ground for about 2 weeks.

harvesting KELP! Going to the beach to harvest, now what?

I find that seaweed takes a LOOONNNGGGG time to decompse enough to be beneficial to the plants. For example...all of the seaweed that I harvested and put into my vegetable beds in the fall is still not fully decomposed. Rinsing it off will lower the salt content...you can always just leave it...

flowering after 3 months...is that bad?

I started my peppers from seed during the first week of February. I just noticed buds on a few of them, yet they are less than 4" tall. I assume that I should cut these flowers off so that plant energy is focused on growth? I won't be re-potting them for at least a few more weeks.

How long can one keep starts in plugs?

you can cut holes and then just use tape to seal them back up. adjust the taped holes as needed to find the right mix.

is it turning out to be a bad year already?

I don't use a heat mat, and the air temp is between 50 and 75 in the room. After over a month, I still have about 25% of my seeds that haven't poked through yet. That's why I started them a few weeks earlier this year.

Okay, so you're cutting way back on the granular ferts and supplementing with other types of fertilizer. Good to know. Thanks for the info.

For people that have grown pepper plants in the 5 gallon setup, like globalbuckets, what amount of fertilizer worked best for one plant? They mention 2 cups of organic 5-5-5, as well as mixing in dolomite. Has anyone found a better ratio for growing hot peppers?

Houston I may have a problem, well, sort of...

Yeah, I live in MA, and grow all of my peppers in containers, too. We have a small yard, so all of my veggies are in raised beds that don't come in contact with the soil. Last year I picked up one of those plastic storage bins from walmart, that are about 2' deep, and 2'x'4'. Took quite a bit...

Ghostly, have you considered making a cold frame for them? I've never tried it with my peppers, but it might work. Temps over the next few weeks will be in the 40's and 50's during the day, and sunny, so the cold frame will get well into the 60's, provided that it gets a lot of sunlight. You...
