    Yellow jackets

Are yellow jackets good for the garden (I know they're bad for the gardener :mouthonfire:)? We never had any around here but this morning I saw several flying around my tomatoes. When I took a closer look I found they were riping apart a tomato worm. Talk about camoflage! I never would have...

    Bug Hunt

Well, I finally got tired of watching all the holes mysteriously appearing on my plants, got off my lazy bhut and went out last night with a flashlight. I found about 8 slugs in my planters (all levels except the tomatoes). They don't seem interested in dill or tomatoes. Dumped 'em in a plastic...

    Tomato Zits

Some of the branches on my tomatoes have green or white bumps all over them (the horizontal branch in photo below. Not the vertical green plastic stake which also has bumps). Some of the white bumps have elongated a bit. Is this normal?

    Pepper Munchers

Hurumph! My little twilight pepper plant has 2 purple peppers on it that are just starting to change color and I just found tonight that something bit the tips off both pods. You can just barely see the seeds inside. Looks like it was done by a squirrel or mouse. I hope he burned his mouth! ;)...

    Spicy Chocolate

If anyone has a good recipe for spicy chocolate bars let me know. I love the stuff but it's waaaay too expensive to keep buying them. Not sure how they are made but I would guess its made from melted chocolate with habenaro powder mixed in and then re-solidified. Anyone have a good recipe?

chinense Bhut Jolokia vs Naga Morich vs Naga Dorset

Hmmm. I know there is a theory that all these peppers are the same plant with the locals calling them by different names depending on where they are grown. I dunno. My Naga Morich and Naga Dorset look alike so far (neither have flowered yet) but the Bhut Jolokias look very different from the...

    Sunburned Peppers

The weather has warmed up here so I started taking my pepper plants out to harden them up. They did fine outside for a few hours. A few days later they did fine leaving them out all day & night. I finally put them all in the ground and now I'm finding at least half of them are getting sun...

    Cubanelles

I saw some cubanelle plants for sale at the local farmer's market. I understand it is a sweet pepper. Does anyone know what it tastes like? The only sweet peppers I've tasted are the 3 bell peppers you find in the supermarket (green, red or yellow). Do they taste like any of those?

    Yellow Leaves?

What does it mean when your plant's leaves start turning yellow one by one? I don't think it is too little water cause I had that on other plants and the leaves wilted. They came back after a good soaking. These leaves aren't wilting. So far it is only on my Peter peppers (which are twice the...

How Long to Use Heat Mat?

I've been using a heat mat to start my seeds but they are all small plants now (about 2 1/2 months old). I've run into problems where they looked fine one morning and then the next morning they are lying on their sides with the leaves all shriveled up. Most came back after a good soaking but...

    Planter boxes

I'm planning on building some planter boxes in the vegetable garden to put my chili & veg sprouts in (so I don't have to bend over so much). I'm wondering about the material to build it with though. I would think the side boards should be treated wood so it doesn't break down so fast in the...

    lighting Fluorescent Lights

Would peppers grow ok under regular fluorescent lights (not the ones designed for growing)? I'm thinking of bringing some ornamentals into the office to put on my desk. I'm not near a window though.

    favorite Favorite pepper for flavor

I'm still putting together my growing last for the coming season but I haven't tasted more than about 5 or 6 varieties of hot pepper. I'm more interested in growing for flavor than for heat. I know there have been polls on "what's your favorite pepper" but I'm wondering what hot peppers people...

    hybrid Cross Pollenation

I only have a small plot (about 10' x4') plot to grow with and plan on growing a half dozen different pepper varieties next season. If (or maybe I should say "when") they cross pollenate, will the mixed features be found when the pure bred plants grow the cross pollenated fruit or is the mixed...
