Haven't posted in a while but thought I would share some of the pink tigers i got this year. None of them had the desired striping but looked very similar to others with the yellow tops and purplish bottoms or freckles. I had one plant that seemed to be more peach bhut-ish. I tried to cross it...
After further research I retract my guess and jump on the wooly aphids bandwagon. Wasn't familiar with them but the pictures definitely resemble them more. Except you say that they aren't bugs under the microscope. Are you only grabbing the cotton looking stuff? Not any sort of fungus i have...
Pretty sure they are mealybugs.
From the interwebs:
Prune out light infestations or dab insects with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol.
Do not over water or overfertilize — mealybugs are attracted to plants with high nitrogen levels and soft growth.
Commercially available beneficial insects...
Did some searching on other plant forums and the consensus seems to be that it is viable in open storage for about a month. If it is frozen dry, use dried flour as a desiccant works from what I read, usually up to a year but definitely at least 6 months.
I finally got my spectrometer up and running. This is pretty cool considering how low cost it is to work with. Still tweaking it a little bit but here is a calibration from a CFL.

This is really cool. I remember coming across it a while back but had forgotten about it. I just ordered one of the desktop 3.0 kits. I am currently working on an LED project and will use this to help with the results.
Beautiful stuff Charles! Always excited for your grows. Can wait to see more of the alligator and also how your pink tigers come out. I have a few "pink tigers" sprouted now so it will be interesting to compare.
If you want to run HID for just starting them out I would look at ceramic metal halide or even just metal halide over HPS. CMH provides a much more even spectrum at roughly 20-40% spectral intensity. So considering that you get a hell of a lot more out of a 400W CMH than you do a HPS looking at...
I'd like to toss this in the mix as well if you are looking at LED.

I'm working on comparing this to the CMH for a super small indoor grow for having fresh veggies in the winter.
Awesome! Thank you. That is helpful. That is a HUGE difference compared to standard HPS and MH bulbs holy crap. I feel like CMH will be cheaper than LED at this point to get that full spectrum power.
Very nice! I haven't really looked into these at all. I am currently looking at doing a custom LED setup but from a cost basis this may be better. Any good SPD charts for these for comparison?
Nice! Hops are fun to grow. Even better if you brew too! You should be able to train them along the fence but they grow best vertically. They also take about 3 years to reach full yield.
Check this out for care:

That's what I do for mine. Specifically for the reason stated, insuring quality. However, it also greatly speeds up the drying process. I dry at low temp in the oven to preserve color.
Prodigal that is awesome that you have a brown variety. My crosses with it were eaten by hornworms so I will have to try again next season.
First ripe one:
On the plant. They don't seem to be going through a color change of green - yellow - orange - red. Just green - red
