outdoors a fishing thread

Excellent...looks like a blast!

I'm not saying this to be critical or judgmental, but please get your hands wet before you handle the fish. Those little guys lose all their protective layer when you touch them with dry hands. The slime on your hands means you've hurt the fish. A lot of people don't realize how much this helps survival rate. I've only recently practiced this and I've been fishing for 30 years....it's never too late to learn.

FINALLY received a decent amount of rain, rivers were up & my official kick off to Steelhead season has begun. Hit a favourite trib about 3 hrs from Toronto, I've never caught anything of note here maybe a 2lb Bow at best (some seriously big river chubbs) but it has far less people & an amazing hike riverside (keeps me coming back) but your body will pay a toll. I've witnessed big fish come out of her just never been lucky to tie into one, all's changed now !

Pretty - I can't wait to go trout fishing but N.Y. season doesn't start until April 1st.  Did you eat those, or throw them back?

They all made the dinner plate. I'm not up on the laws over there but could swear I see reports of guys catching in the rivers off of Ontario & Erie this time of year in NY

Good - those rainbows are far too tasty to be thrown back :)

General New York State regulations have trout season from April 1st - October 15th - http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/31421.html

However, some counties and lakes have their own regulations, such as lake Erie where trout, coho salmon and chinook salmon are legal to catch all year.

Your post made me look up the county where I freshwater fish (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/31496.html) and i'm pleasantly surprised that a few places allow trout fishing all year as well.  I've got to call up somebody who lives there and ask whether it is realistic to catch any now—I have a feeling the answer will be no.  I've never fly fished - I just shore cast and boat fish with a spinning reel.

I can't wait to populate this thread with some of my own pictures, but I have a feeling it that will not happen until at least March.

Nice! Not sure if you know the history of this pattern but it was developed by Francis Betters in upstate NY. I met him quite a few times as a kid at his shop in Wilmington NY. My grandma grew up nearby and there are some Betters back in our family tree so there is a pretty good chance I am a distant relative.

Did you use woodchuck fur for the tail? I used to take Fran pieces of hide and the tails from woodchucks I would trap for farmers.

I am very familiar with the history of it and other New York patterns. Haven't tied them as bushy or fast as Mr. Betters did though, just a few months of tying under my belt.

The wulffs are what I like using for dry/dropper combos on small streams. Super visible and fish will hit top and bottom. Right now they aren't looking up as it's really cold, but still a visible and stealthy indicator.

Also,it was Seeforellen that they were stocking in Erie. A lot of clandestine shit that goes on there,so who knows what is happening now. One thing is for certain, more and more land is being posted and animosity is growing.

Took a little trip for some wild browns with my buddy from Cleveland Monday. Thought it would be fitting to tie up some jalapeno caddis flies for the trip.  The browns were spooky per usual, but managed to get a few to take the peno.

Great photo's man the black & white adds something special. You just happened across that dead buck? Did you take the tail?

So many great pics and adventures in here...

The ice is starting to thicken up so a trek was in order to try & ice some Splake. -9C felt like +10 in the sun with zero wind, 2" of decent ice with 6" of white ice on top made things stable but didn't trek around the lake to much. Spudding our way around the ice was pretty uniform in the south east bay. Managed to ice a few good pan sized fish for a decent shore lunch & walked away with a stellar ice opener for 2017, hope the colder temps start to stiffen up the big lakes real soon, the bug has started!
