outdoors a fishing thread

Thought I'd share a few pics of a recent camping/fishing trip to Eildon, Victoria (Australia).

"I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!"

-Dorothea Mackellar
(This poem came to mind after looking out at the view above)

The fishing was great, the best it's been at this location in years. There is a dam wall about 400m upstream (left) from here. They started releasing a lot of water only a few days earlier, which usually makes the fishing quite challenging.

A nice Brown.

Another nice Brown.

All in all, over about four days, three Brown and two Rainbow Trout were caught between four fishermen using hard bodied plastic lures.

I have a massive family in Melbourne.

Are their trout in Lake Eildon?? You might be able to fish below the dam in the tailwaters for large fish, that is where our big trout reside. It's great to see a body of water in that area stay cool enough for trout.

That's cool that you have family in Melbourne, I live 40 minutes drive from Melbourne CBD. Let me know if you’d ever like me to send them a package of fresh pods.  :P

There are Trout in the Lake, but I've never fished there. The spot we camp at is on private property, and not far downstream from the pondage (dam) wall. We camp at this spot 1-2 times per year, and is right on the river as you can see in the pics.

The water was cold, and I mean really cold. They were releasing water from the pondage, and of course the water that gets released comes from the bottom of the lake on the other side. It doesn't get warmed by the sun at all. I have been ocean diving in the middle of winter in a 3mm wetsuit where I could last 3hrs. This was no comparison. I'd guess the water temp to be below 10deg C. It was quite hot at the time, I did go for a swim but couldn't stay in for very long.

Bottom fed is the ticket. I bet there are some big fish near the release.

Some of them are in Carlton North, and areas around the city, and a couple are in Perth now. I definitely will let you know about the pods, one is a spice head.

I've caught fish over 50cm (20") from this stretch of river, and I'm sure there are bigger, much wiser fish to be had.

Carlton isn't far from me at all, however Perth is on the other side of the country. I have sauces, powders and rubs along with fresh pods which are just starting to ripen. I'd be happy to work something out for you, so just let me know.

First fish of the year—freshwater Bass. Can somebody tell if this is a largemouth or smallmouth? The internet isn’t helping me enough. This fish fought harder than anything this size that I’ve ever caught. As soon as my wacky rigged Senko worm hit the water, it dropped like a heavy brick. It took me a while to realize that I had caught a fish as I thought the hook hit the bottom of the lake as I was reeling in. The fish fought like crazy the entire time I was bringing it in.

Looks like a spotted bass to me

I caught 2 more big bass in the same lake this morning.  Some of my fisherman buddies are convinced that these are actually Largemouth.  I'm just bringing it up, not inviting a further discussion:

I caught the two fish this morning using the “wacky rig” The “wacky rig” feels odd to me as I was taught as a kid to always double hook worms in order to show as little of the hook as possible, but this setup exposes the entire hook!  The bass don’t seem to care as they  go after the imitation worms with a big gulp.

Was fortunate enough to hit my favorite stream today. An unbelievable place that holds wild reproducing populations of Browns,Bows, and Brookies.  It's tucked away in an old growth Hemlock stand with some pretty strenuous and rugged if not dangerous hiking. Perfect for keeping the cooler fillers out!  :P

Was able to nail the wild trout trifecta today.

Not sure if you're into mushrooms, but reishi mushrooms grow on dead hemlocks, especially around streams and rivers where it's humid. Check them out, they're extremely delicious and nutritious. They have 2 parts to the mushroom, the 1st part you eat, the 2nd part you turn into tea. What you do is take  knife and slap the bade into the mushroom like an axe chopping wood. this test is to find where the soft part is. Once you've found the depth, you can cut around the mushroom for the delicious flesh. The hard part is the hard part *pun intended*. You can grind it up, chop it up etc, vitamix it (warning, it can break a vitamix if it's already dehydrated) and dehydrate it. I personally like to use a cheese grater when it's fresh then dehydrate it. Put it in a bag for storage. Add the dehydrated stuff to a crock pot and water, let it cook then strain. It's really healthy and can be made for morning teas etc.

How do i Know this? I go mushroom hunting in asheville NC with a mushroom professional. Try it out, at least the flesh if you can find them. They're delicious fried in some butter, no joke.

PS. I think i see one in the 2nd steam picture to the right. looks a little high to grab though.

My phone is currently out of commission, otherwise id post a good picture, but i just took a pic from my computer of a framed pic of me with a reishi. Generally, the white part / lighter part is the soft edible (palatable ) part
