a novice,

I'm a newbie pepper hobbyist, with both culinary and medical interests in peppers.

Culinarily, i don't think the peppers at the grocery store offer anything for me --certainly not since i harvested and sampled a 'ghost pepper'.

Medicinally, i am fascinated by Capsicum's role in pain management, and how much it helps me with chronic pain. One ghost pepper offered me FOUR FULL DAYS OF PAIN FREE ACTIVITY !! Nothing -- absolutely nothing else, including modern pharmaceuticals -- has done so much for me in 20 years. If you ever see me crying while eating a pepper, it actually might be sentiment and joy!

My immediate ambition is to grow the variety, "Carolina Reaper", indoors under artificial lighting, in a limited space. Suggestions welcome. Timely warnings are very welcome!

I've never participated in forums before, and the sheer size and volume of info here is overwhelming for me, without a GPS and a roadmap..... Are there any topics/discussions here that i should visit first ?

Thank you for letting me participate in this. I feel like a sad and lonely boy who's finally found some friendly chums to trade baseball cards with.

One good place to start would be the "glog" (grow log) section of the "growing peppers" sub forum. There are tons of threads covering the growing seasons (indoors and outdoors) of many different members here. Lots of great ideas for indoor grows there. Also, check out the grow tech area, also in growing peppers.  :welcome: to THP!

Welcome Mike,

Grow logs, fun zone, the lounge are a few good places to start. We are huge, but you'll find a very great group of friendly, knowledgable people. WELCOME

Welcome! I find myself to be in a similar position than you, for which I really love peppers and heat, but actually never grew anything and would really like to give it a try.
I'll try to grow outdoor, though, when the growing season starts. Maybe we'll both learn stuff from each others ;)

Welcome to THP...that's awesome to hear that capsicum has given you pain relief...I have been doing some research into capsicum as an analgesic ....it could be a miracle drug..:)

Welcome from Slovenia

Good to hear that hot peppers help you with pain. You're gonna find a lot of growing and cooking tips here.

Welcome from Romania!
How did you used the hot pepper when you had the 4 days without pains?
The only mature ghost pepper i could harvest was about the size of my thumb (I started late, with purchased plants, grown in containers, and there are deer and other animals which caused damage -- NOT perfect growing conditions, but a good learning experience). Anyway, i ate small pieces -- about 1 cm (1/2 inch) diameter per dosage -- every time the pain started to return.
To administer each dose, i mashed a piece, mixed it with peanut butter, and made a sandwich. I'm guessing that the peanut butter absorbed much of the capsaicin, and released it slowly as it was digested. The result: no heartburn, and the medicinal effects lasted longer.
An unexpected bonus was that i've finally found a way to make peanut butter sandwiches taste much better !

Previously, i have experimented with a transdermal application: mash 1/8 - 1/4 of a store-bought habanero pepper, apply as a poultice, and secure with surgical tape. It's only partially effective, burns and itches somewhat, and can accidentally loosen off. The benefits were worth it, but a peanut "bhutter" sandwich is much more effective... and provides me with a tasty lunch.
