AJs 2011 Season Start...

no watering by hand...I bottom water...just sit them in a container of water and let them drink a few minutes...promotes downward root growth and nothing gets on the top of the soil or leaves...

WOW 1,152 seeds planted CRAZY haha. Great set up you've got. I cant wait to see some more of your backyard videos this year.

you water these by hand? that must take forever! why don't you install an automated mister? i did that with my seedlings last year. same idea as a EZ cloner but I had the PVC tubes (with holes drilled for the misters) hanging above the plants. I love automating everything lol

You obviously haven't seen his pepper porn.

AJ, it is good to see your setup in action again. You going to grow anything out of the ordinary this year? Keep up the good work, I'll keep an eye on your progress.

I may try and do a video every couple of weeks this year instead of every month...probably would show the growth better...thanks LNF..good luck with your project man...hope it works out for you...

thanks Dale...gonna grow some Jonahs and Doublahs this year...may try and land some morougas..thats 3 I haven't grown...other than that, just a bunch of scorpions, 7s, and Bhuts...got a bunch of foodaramas too that I think is my favorite...not the hottest by any means but to me they are the most gorgeous pods I have ever grown...oh Yeah...some ButchTs too..

hoping you have a great year too Dale...

This is an awesome thread and you are barely started!!

I have more questions because I am trying to put this all together in my mind so I can do something like this next season.

When you put a 72 cell tray in the germinator and say... 15 sprout, or some start early and the rest come on slowly, what do you do then? Do you transplant them into new trays and the next grow box, or do you reach a point when you decide you've gotten as much germination as you're going to get and just move the whole tray, empty cells and all?

Or do you somehow get 72 seeds to pop up at the same time? I am testing methods of germinating right now to try and find a reliable one.

Thanks AJ

Thanks Mega...always glad to try and help a fellow grower...

each tray will be transplanted when I start seeing roots from the seedlings starting to emerge out of the bottom of the tray...I like lots of roots...usually takes about 3 to 3 1/2 weeks before first transplant...seeds that have not sprouted by then, sad to say go into the compost pile...

I am testing methods of germinating right now to try and find a reliable one.

finding what works for YOU is the most important thing...there is a plethora of information on the forum about starting seeds, germination, lighting, etc., but YOU have to figure out what works for YOU...

It seems I am improving each year on my methods and that is key to being a successful grower...here is a link to my facebook "local business" page...if you look in the discussion section, I wrote about how I start seeds...fairly detailed with explanations of why I do it the way I do...

keep the questions/comments coming...that is how we all learn...

AJ,

Very very impressive !!.

I wish I had 1/5th of acre this season. (We are trying to buy a good property this year. Then I may have some 2500 sq.ft to 4200 sq.ft all to myself)

I would, then, try and grow a jungle of peppers !!

AJ,

About How often do you end up having to bottom water the plug trays in your set up? Just wonderin, mine are going to be enclosed similar to your germ chamber. Do I need to start training the wife to do it or is it a once a day or less thing. Seems like the plugs should be able to hold enough moisture for at least one day but at 86 maybe not.

will do Dale...have you planted anything yet?

soakem about every third day...

I only have about 600 chinenses started so far but will start more seeds when they arrive. I'll wait a bit to start the other species. My goal this year is roughly 2500 plants,125 to 150 varieties. i'm cutting back this year. LoL.

Thats great Dale...I still have about 3 chinense germinations left so I will start about 2500 seeds for them...the first chinese should be ready for market by the 3rd week of March, then I will start on the annuums, maybe 4 or 5 varieties...figure I can get the annuums ready to go to market right at the time the chinense are ready if they grow anything like I am used to...I am only planting a few varieties this year...probably 20 or so

the plants in AJs Seedling Bootcamp are doing fine and loving the light and their twice a day 15-20 mph windstorm...these plants are going to be sturdy...

looks like I got about 7 more days before they move to the "slowgrow" area...which might not be a slowgrow area after I get a 90 Watt UFO 5 band LED fixture...gotta find the money first...those dang things are EXPENSIVE...but it will cover the area with 90 watts I am covering with 756 watts now...quite a bit on electricity...now, if I can just talk the wife into understanding what we would save in a year and convince her that in two months this fixture will pay for itself and start saving us dollar bills...

thanks gents...just wait until some of the other growers post their photos...this is about average IMO...

BUT, I was successful talking to the wife and I will receive one of these bad boys within a few days..

Dang AJ, Just amazing , as usual. You have this chili growing thing down to an art!
Kevin

Holy Moly AJ, that''s over the top. I'd be happy to half of mine looking that good. Way to go.

I am tickled to death...so far, 16 of the plants I cut back and just sat in the garage have started putting on new growth. These plants were watered with one pint of water December 7 and haven't got another drink until today. The totally best part is they are all Trinidad Scorpion plants... :woohoo:

There are several more "promising" looking plants and they will get water today too, but the TSs satisfied my curiosity to see if I could just cut them back, bring them inside, and let the sit for 3 months....answer is a big YES

now I got a project to do today....gonna build a 4' X 4' platform on castors with 1" X 4" sides that will be lined with 6 mil visquene to hold water and make bottom watering these new plants easy. They will be transplanted back to probably 2/3 gallon before plantout to 7 gallon containers...will trim the rootball and give them some fresh soil and something to eat...

here is the materials...

todays project complete...so if any one ask you how do you bottom water 5 gallon containers in the garage, you can point them here...
