AJs 2012 Season - A Pictorial Discussion

I am getting a one day jump on last season...today is my 2012 season start...

The Germinator has been cleaned, I am using new trays for seed starting and Hoffman's Seed Starting Mix as my grow media...

If any of you decide to use Hoffman's Seed Starting Mix, be patient, it takes as much as 24 hours pre-soak to get this light weight mix totally wet...I have said it before and I will say it again...this is the cleanest seed starting mix I have ever used....clean and light weight means better root growth IMO..

All circuits and systems are a go on the germinator...am stabilizing the temperature for the next 24 hours...as you can see, the upper box is about 93F and the lower box is 85F...I have to vent the top to let both chambers reach the same temperature...

something tells me this is going to be another hot summer....close to record heat again...so the season will go as mother wants it to...I am learning each year how to change my grow techniques and am adapting to North Texas...

hope you folks enjoy this thread...if anyone has any questions or comments, they are welcome...

Looking great AJ. I gues my plants are about 10 days behind yours which worries me considering how much earlier you can plant out than I can. Its gonna be another year of hiding plants in every nook and cranny indoors that I can.

Looks great AJ, love the seedling forests on those 72 plug trays. Any luck on the rare types like tovarii and c. Galaponese? Nothing for me yet.

that's what my "slow grow" area is for...to gauge the time under lights and time it so they are sturdy plants when transplanting to their final home....shorten your light period and the growth will slow down a little...I go to 12/12 during the last couple of weeks...

got 5 of 9 C. galopagense or how ever it's spelled...no tovari...one of the Cg's isn't going to make it but there are two that are really strong...they are in the picture on the right in the smaller containers in the grow box

Wow, that is impressive. galaponese are supposed to be very hard to germinate. I'm gonna try scarification on the seeds and see if that helps them germinate. Maybe the cup method doesn't work with these wild varieties and they need soil to germinate.

I had 1 tovarii sprout, but it died. The others are nothing so far.

 the second picture was an old one, I replaced it with one taken this morning in which you can see the Cg's

Wow, amazing work as always! AJ, did you know it took me 57 days to sprout a Tovarii before? Amazingly, BOTH seeds popped on day #57. It was too strange.

That chamber with all the CFLs is pretty cool. Like Jamaica anytime of the year. lol.

Chris

I just found your thread AJ....Fantastic set up, good luck wiith your coming season, your got some interesting varieties, great minds must think alike, I've got most of the same as what your growing this season, hopefully we can do a few trades later in the year

it if takes that long for a tovari to pop a hook, it will probably try my patience...heck, the grow box will be shut down by then...and the growbox with all those CFLs stays about 86 or 88 with the door wide open...

Wow...I thought you said you were keeping them on a 12 hr light cycle to keep them from growing too fast! I would love to see what would happen with a 16+hr cycle! Inspirational!

Thanks for the detailed reply regarding your lights aj, its great to share knowledge like that so Willingly. And thanks for the continued great updates.

Hey AJ
I think I've noticed you use both regular 3.5" or 4" square pots (like pictured above), and also those extra deep 3.5 x 5 inch pots (I could be wrong). Which ones do you prefer, and why? Also, how much more time do the deep ones buy you before you have to pot up again? I've always used keg cups in the past, but I would rather not this year, because I'm growing more plants than I have in the past. I need something that will be stable in trays, and round cups just seem like a big waste of space to me. Do you know of a good place to buy this stuff?
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks a bunch!

I don't mind sharing...just don't take what I do as gospel because you have to find out what works for you....

my selection of container size is dependant on what I am going to do with the plants...I put the ones I am going to keep in 3.5" sq X 3" deep ones...these will be transplanted again in about a month either to 6" or 5 gallon containers...all depends on what the April weather is going to look like...

I use some 4" ones for a few plants I will sell but they will be gone by the middle of April I hope...

I use the 3.5" sq X 5" ones for plants that will be the last to transplant to their final destination or left overs to sell...

Man you can't get those plants any greener....they look great!

Ronnie by the way, what were the Pequin peppers crossed with ( from Hev on Sev) ? The seeds are coming up nicely but I.d like to label them

Thanks
Greg

they are called a peqrano...pequin X serrano...

OK...I got another 56 transplanted today...this is probably one of the better transplant percentages I have had in a long time...

and all of their root systems looked like ( planted on 2 January 12 - 36 days)

These plants are doing quite well IMO....

I got another tray I was just looking at and the Purple Bhut Jolokia are going to be gorgeous plants...the color is phenomenal...these will be transplanted this coming Saturday or maybe Friday depending on their growth over the next couple of days...this is the period when their growth seems to really kick in...

Looks great AJ, i have to agree about the purple bhuts as i'm in the same boat :) They look amazing. Out of the sea of green, you have these purple gems. I'm also growing the Cheiro Roxa which are also purple. Very pretty too.

Lookin' really good, AJ - lovin' your pics, getting despondent :mope:
I hope I get three plants that look that good.
Keep those photos coming!
