AJs 2012 Season - A Pictorial Discussion

I am getting a one day jump on last season...today is my 2012 season start...

The Germinator has been cleaned, I am using new trays for seed starting and Hoffman's Seed Starting Mix as my grow media...

If any of you decide to use Hoffman's Seed Starting Mix, be patient, it takes as much as 24 hours pre-soak to get this light weight mix totally wet...I have said it before and I will say it again...this is the cleanest seed starting mix I have ever used....clean and light weight means better root growth IMO..

All circuits and systems are a go on the germinator...am stabilizing the temperature for the next 24 hours...as you can see, the upper box is about 93F and the lower box is 85F...I have to vent the top to let both chambers reach the same temperature...

something tells me this is going to be another hot summer....close to record heat again...so the season will go as mother wants it to...I am learning each year how to change my grow techniques and am adapting to North Texas...

got up early this morning and decided to transplant tray 4...got 59 out of 69 good transplants...these are all "Indian" type...Bhut and Bih Jolokia, Dorset Naga, Naga Morich, heck you can see...

planting area is starting to get limited...there will be some shade tree mechanicin' goin' on pretty shortly...
 
I can see by looking at your pics that mine are pretty small and leggy. The leaves are not developing as fast as yours did. That is probably because I cannot hold my temps high enough. Its ok though because I don't plant out until May.
 
Love watching you "pros" at work. Most impressive to me is the attention to detail and organization. Your plants look really happy, as they should with the amount of top quality care you are giving them. I was reading through some old threads and checked out the fatalii smack down a few seasons back. You were my pick to win early on until the wind got you...I didn't get to finish the whole thing yet so don't tell me how it finished!

amen to that Greg...I am running out of space pretty quickly myself..

got another 95 transplanted today...all Trinidad Scorpions....I had trouble with 8 trays of scorpions in the germinator...had a warm spell here and the temperature in the germinator was hard to keep below 92F...that's what I'm blaiming the poor germination rates on....as a side note, the other 6 trays I planted are germinating at near 90%

Another wonderful year to watch. Once again I love the fact that the engineer in you brings us all the stats, records, and massive amounts of info. Thanks again for all the advice over the last 2 years.

OK Trays 7 and 8 transplanted today...got a total of 96...yeah, my germination percent sucks on these 4 trays (5-8)...all scorpions...

you know, this low germination percentage is kinda embarassing...I should be close to 90%, but that's what happens when your temperatures get above 90F...I kick myself for not paying closer attention...but on the other hand...the transplant percent is following the germination percent so I am getting 2/3 seeds to viable plants and that's good enough for my purposes...
 
I had a horrible germ rate this year, right around 58% when it was over and done with... most hooked then poof, dead! Never figured it out. Things are looking really good AJ, gonna be a monster of a year for you

AJ, I apologize if I missed it earlier in the thread, but what is your key? i.e. Red font vs. black vs. green. Based on the percentages, I'm assuming (always livin' on the edge) that the red is the non-xplant victims?
 
the heat may have had something to do with it I suppose but i don't think so...the last four trays of scorpions I planted are running close to 90% so I think it was my temperature during germination...

@EM...black is seeds planted, red + green is germinated seeds, green is transplanted seeds...

I'd be pleased to hear what others have to say about this, but your hook-then-death experience makes me think your temperatures were too high. If you're using heat mat(s), it's very easy to over-heat your germination flats, imho.

"Damping Off".........is usually the culprit once the sprouts emerge. That can result from a consistantly wet packed soil mix.
