Alex_K - 2022/2023 - Growing peppers in Brazil!

I think this season I will become a pepper plant hoarder as I received over 100 different varieties from my brother and ended up planting them all, I honestly don't know how I will accommodate so many plants!
My original plan for this season was the wild species, the native varieties from Brazil and a few import varieties that I found very interesting, however, now with over 100 imported varieties I think my plans have changed...
It's already spring here in Brazil and some varieties that I sowed in March, went through the winter and are already with their first pods while others that I sowed in August are still in their initial stages of growth.
I hope I don't have any major problems this season, one variety or another will surely die on the way but it's part of learning process right!?

Wish me luck! 🙂

My list this season:

The wilds:

Thanks to @Wiriwiri for submitting some of the species! It has been very hard to acquire them since few online stores have them and those that do unfortunately do not ship to Brazil... These are the ones I got for this season.

Native from Brazil:

I decided to add Brazilian varieties this season, from the most common to those that are quite obscure and cultivated only by indigenous people or in a certain community/region.
Although there are many varieties here, there is no interest from universities or organizations in preserving or even registering them, the public/private sectors that research Capsicum varieties generally direct their studies only to the improvement of commercial varieties to resist pests or to increase the yield Heirloom varieties end up being left out.
These are the varieties that I managed to obtain... Being a country of continental dimensions, there are many other varieties that I probably will never know.

Import varieties:

The vast majority were given by my brother... Will I be able to grow all these varieties? Probably not! But I'll try to grow as much as I can, I'm thinking of rotating the varieties discarding the ones that have already produced to make room for those that haven't yet, I think that's what I can do...

Quite busy lately, I hope to update this thread more often!!! 🙄

These are some of the few wild species I got this season It's not much but that's what I got!
I had no difficulty growing them however the success of seed germination was quite inconsistent, some seeds have been in the seedling tray for almost 1 year and I will probably discard them! 😞

Capsicum rhomboideum

No heat at all, this species has vertical growth, mine reached about 1.71M the yellow flowers are interesting.

Capsicum praetermissum #1 and #2 aka. Cumari verdadeira, Cumari passarinho

I have two plants of this species, one from last season and another that I am growing this season, it fascinates me how the two plants are physically different, one totally covered in hair and the other completely smooth.

Blue Mystery

Looking for images of this variety on internet, initially I thought it was just a variant of Capsium praetermissum with elongated pods however when growing it I noticed that a characteristic that all praetermissum that I grew or had access to has is that when its pods ripen, it easily drop off the calyx which does not happen with this variety, I also think that its flowers have a very dark purple tone.
I don't know if this plant is just a natural cross between different species or if it's a own species I think many people have grown it and can explain it better than me...

Looking good, Alex! Blue mystery is supposed to be a fortuitous interspecific cross with possible traits of praetermissum, baccatum, and annuum, discovered years ago by Judy at PL.

By the way, it looks to me like your cardenansii is hybridized. Whenever I have a card outcross with a rocoto the F1's get the shorter flowers like yours is showing instead of the characteristic longer more tube-like flowers.

How do you acquire all these interesting varieties? Seeing that you're in Brazil, I like to think you just walk out into the rainforest and start collecting all these rare specimens. Thanks for sharing your work with us!

Nah! I live far from the forest regions here in Brazil however the C. rabenii/C. praetermissum are quite common here in the region where I live and can be found in their natural form in small green areas or in parks and farms.
The other species I bought from EU online store or received from friends here on the forum 🙂
By the way, here in Brazil it is forbidden to collect anything from "preserved" forest regions such as the Amazon Forest, Atlantic Forest and Cerrado unless you are an authorized researcher or are working with Universities so... ☹️

It is a pity that it is hybridized! Guess I'll have to look again...
Do you have any suggestions for online stores that have wild varieties that ship to Brazil?
