Alex_K - 2022/2023 - Growing peppers in Brazil!

I think this season I will become a pepper plant hoarder as I received over 100 different varieties from my brother and ended up planting them all, I honestly don't know how I will accommodate so many plants!
My original plan for this season was the wild species, the native varieties from Brazil and a few import varieties that I found very interesting, however, now with over 100 imported varieties I think my plans have changed...
It's already spring here in Brazil and some varieties that I sowed in March, went through the winter and are already with their first pods while others that I sowed in August are still in their initial stages of growth.
I hope I don't have any major problems this season, one variety or another will surely die on the way but it's part of learning process right!?

Wish me luck! 🙂

My list this season:

The wilds:

Thanks to @Wiriwiri for submitting some of the species! It has been very hard to acquire them since few online stores have them and those that do unfortunately do not ship to Brazil... These are the ones I got for this season.

Native from Brazil:

I decided to add Brazilian varieties this season, from the most common to those that are quite obscure and cultivated only by indigenous people or in a certain community/region.
Although there are many varieties here, there is no interest from universities or organizations in preserving or even registering them, the public/private sectors that research Capsicum varieties generally direct their studies only to the improvement of commercial varieties to resist pests or to increase the yield Heirloom varieties end up being left out.
These are the varieties that I managed to obtain... Being a country of continental dimensions, there are many other varieties that I probably will never know.

Import varieties:

The vast majority were given by my brother... Will I be able to grow all these varieties? Probably not! But I'll try to grow as much as I can, I'm thinking of rotating the varieties discarding the ones that have already produced to make room for those that haven't yet, I think that's what I can do...

Peppapeach aka. Peachadew

For me this variety is like a round version of Sugar Rush Peach, have the same profile in taste and heat level, the plant is very productive, nice variety!

Update...

Butch T x 7 Pot Jonah Gold

This variety was originally from my last season however I had problems with some pests and the plant ended up dying, so this is the second attempt It's interesting cross, very productive and its pods is considerably hot

Aji Charapita

The much acclaimed Aji Charapita the plant produces hundreds of tiny peppers that are a nightmare to harvest! I think the last time it took me almost 1 hour to collect them all! 😡
I pickled all whole in vinegar, because they are small I think they are perfect to leave on the table and when you want to spice up the dish drop one or two in the plate.
Here in Brazil it's commom to make the same with small varieties like Malagueta, Cumari verdadeira, Cumari do Pará, Bode, etc...

...and I finally found the tulle fabrics to avoid a unwanted cross pollination... 🙂
I still intend to use the glue technique, but only in varieties thats is easy to apply the method, in others tulle will be the option, especially now that it's raining a lot here! ⛈️

Not too surprising with a Butch T x 7 Pot! :)

The purple blush on the WLB pods looks great.

Growing pepper plants is not always a success sometimes there are disappointments and failures along the way... Right? 😉
These were some of the disappointments... Anyway, I think it's important to remember that most of the sellers I bought seeds from, produces the seeds in open pollination, so there's no guarantee that the variety will be pure, and from each variety I only grew two plants, some I still have seeds and I can try again but it will be in the next season if they still germinate!

"This is not the Brown Reaper"

This is supposed to be the Brown Reaper but it looks more like a peach version of it, I don't know, what do you think? 🤔

I have a few more varieties that didn't turn out to be what I expected but I haven't taken pictures yet...
If is that the seeds have been accidentally swapped there is still the possibility of identify them through their characteristics however in case of unwanted crossing it is practically impossible! I don't think this is the case but new varieties that are not yet stabilized can produce pretty much anything too so... 🙁
