Alex_K - 2022/2023 - Growing peppers in Brazil!

I think this season I will become a pepper plant hoarder as I received over 100 different varieties from my brother and ended up planting them all, I honestly don't know how I will accommodate so many plants!
My original plan for this season was the wild species, the native varieties from Brazil and a few import varieties that I found very interesting, however, now with over 100 imported varieties I think my plans have changed...
It's already spring here in Brazil and some varieties that I sowed in March, went through the winter and are already with their first pods while others that I sowed in August are still in their initial stages of growth.
I hope I don't have any major problems this season, one variety or another will surely die on the way but it's part of learning process right!?

Wish me luck! 🙂

My list this season:

The wilds:

Thanks to @Wiriwiri for submitting some of the species! It has been very hard to acquire them since few online stores have them and those that do unfortunately do not ship to Brazil... These are the ones I got for this season.

Native from Brazil:

I decided to add Brazilian varieties this season, from the most common to those that are quite obscure and cultivated only by indigenous people or in a certain community/region.
Although there are many varieties here, there is no interest from universities or organizations in preserving or even registering them, the public/private sectors that research Capsicum varieties generally direct their studies only to the improvement of commercial varieties to resist pests or to increase the yield Heirloom varieties end up being left out.
These are the varieties that I managed to obtain... Being a country of continental dimensions, there are many other varieties that I probably will never know.

Import varieties:

The vast majority were given by my brother... Will I be able to grow all these varieties? Probably not! But I'll try to grow as much as I can, I'm thinking of rotating the varieties discarding the ones that have already produced to make room for those that haven't yet, I think that's what I can do...

Quite busy lately, I hope to update this thread more often!!! 🙄

Well, I'm seriously thinking about giving some of the plants to relatives, neighbors, friends... since I won't have space for so many. I think I'm totally screwed! 😅
Hey, that's my style too. I've never had a shortage of relatives, neighbors, and friends that I couldn't unload my extras to. It's a win/win, they get rare peppers they can't find in a store and I get more space to grow some more varieties! Best of luck!

Thanks Dougthehead! Five plants have already found a new home! The only condition is that they return some of the seeds to me... 😉

Now some update...

It's lantern shape habanero type variety...

Pérola Laranja (CGN 22838)

Unusual Brazilian variety, you won't find them in markets for example. Despite being called Pérola Laranja (transl. "Orange Pearl") its color is more like peach and its pods are small and rounded with size close to the Aji Charapita.

Drangon's Breath 'Moruga pheno'

The seller had two variants of this same pepper, one with the Moruga phenotype and the other with the Reaper phenotype, I don't know the difference other than the appearance.
It seems to be super hot, however, I don't know how much compared to others in the same category.

What a beautiful sight!
I hope my Thunder cacho brown will develop like that, really pretty pepper. How do you find the taste/heat compared to the red one?
I'm sure if you grow it in a bigger pot than mine, you'll have a bigger plant and more pods! Cacho Brown has a thicker and harder skin than Thunder Mountain Longhorn which for me is a disadvantage but that depends on the application, the flavor I also prefer Thunder Mountain Longhorn because it is sweeter, however it is by no means a bad variety I think it is great dehydrates in flakes outside that look amazing with pods longer than the plant itself! 👍

Thanks! @Downriver 🙂

@Sulsa

Mmm... 🤔 that's a hard question to answer! I couldn't try all the varieties I intended to grow this season as there are too many and some will probably stay for the next season, but in terms of flavor I really liked these three varieties so far:

-Scotch Bonnet MOA Red: Great taste and aroma with balanced heat without being too spicy

-Bode Yellow: A very common Brazilian variety, it has a great flavor and an intense aroma. Its medium spiciness makes it a versatile variety that can be used in many ways

-Aji Pineapple: Variety that has been around for a long time, it's the first time I've grown it and its sweet flavor and strongly citrus aroma surprised me!

I'm glad you like the posts, I hope I'm not bothering anyone with too many photos here! 😅

Update...

Aji Guyana

Interesting variety, its pods are very long reaching here up to 14cm, its branches are fragile which ends up being a problem to support its own pods which are large, placing supports is absolutely necessary for this variety.

Scotch Bonnet MOA Red

I liked this variety, having a balanced spiciness and flavor, it ends up being quite versatile in the kitchen, and can be used in several ways in several dishes... Of course, tolerance to heat is different from person to person! 😅

As I said earlier I'm dedicating myself to some Brazilian varieties this season, among the peppers consumed here in Brazil there is a separate category called "Pimenta de cheiro" (transl. Aromatic pepper/Smell pepper). It is no coincidence that they are almost always C. chinense since they have that strong floral or fruity scent. Still within this category, they are divided into "ardida" (hot) or "doce" (sweet/no heat), and are widely used in the cuisine of the north and northeast of the country.
The hot one is used to add heat and flavor to dishes as well to make sauces and be preserved in vinegar or oil. The sweet are used mainly as a seasoning for dishes without adding heat.
Generally they are named as "Pimenta de cheiro" + the name of the state, city, or region where it is found or "Pimenta de cheiro" + commercial name, popular name, color or physical characteristics.
I think it's important to mention that almost always the peppers called "Pimenta de cheiro" are C. chinense, but not all C. chinense found in Brazil are called "Pimenta de cheiro", so this name does not designate a species but only a group within the C.chinense.

Cheiro Doce or just Pimenta de Cheiro (transl. Cheiro Sweet / Aromatic pepper)

This is by far the most common variety of this category, it is a mild pepper widely used as a seasoning.
Originally from the north and midwest regions of the country it was initially domesticated by indigenous peoples, it is light green when unripe and red when ripe.
Peppers without spiciness here in Brazil are always sold in their unripe stage, it is practically impossible to find them ripe for sale, I can't say why but I assume the flavor is better at this stage I don't know!

Cheiro Lupita (trade name)

This variety is originally from the northern region of Brazil (Pará, Amazonas, Acre state), however, seeds companies have started to commercialize this variety by giving its own name (trade name).
This is Cheiro Lupita, one of the commercial versions of this pepper, I cannot say with certainty but I believe that "Cheiro Lupita", "Cheiro Acemira" and "Cheiro do Norte" are the trade name of the same variety, I grow here "Cheiro Lupita" and "Cheiro Acemira" and both have practically the same characteristics.
Pods in the shape of an elongated habanero, light green when immature and peach when ripe, without spiciness and strong fruity scent.
