Are there any Dresden Files Fans out there ?

Somewhere around 2007 or '08, i chanced upon a TV series called "The Dresden Files", to which i took an instant liking. Alas, it only lasted one season.

Then i discovered that it was based upon a series of books by Jim Butcher. The books have accquired quite a fervent fan following. It features a protagonist named Harry Dresden, a private detective in contemporary Chicago. He's also a wizard... and encounters supernatural phenomena and creatures quite regularly.
Perhaps it is best compared to the original Night Stalker series from the 1970s, starring Darren McGavin. It has a similar blend of action/adventure, suspense... and some surprisingly funny humorous elements.

The fans are an enthusiastic bunch: one group, calling itself Tower Of Turtles, released an hour-long movie on YouTube a few years ago (titled Night Light), and recently released a 5-minute-long trailer for their second fan film, Red Sun -- which is soon to be released.
These movies would be lost on anyone who hasn't read the books. In Night Light, the combat choreography and some other cinematography qualities may be less than professionally produced movies... however the Red Sun trailer strongly suggests that this has been addressed in their latest effort.

There is another group, called Dresden Files Fan Filming, which has composed a great many brief vignettes, but no feature-length films as yet.

Books, TV series, and fan films have made me a Dresden fan for life. The next novel, Peace Talks, is going to be published sometime in the next few months. I can hardly wait !!

Any other fans out there ? Who's your favorite character ? Which is your favorite scene in a book or tv episode ?

Yup, same here, watched the series then found out its a book, read all of them except the last one, I binged on them, so see when I get tp the last book, maybe the next sequel will be out by then. Shame the series didnt last.

The 2nd fanfilm, is coming out fairly soon, and Peace Talks, the newest novel, is rumored to be published this spring.

It WAS a shame about the series.

Here's an interesting story: apparently, Jim Butcher wrote the first novel, Storm Front, merely as an exercise while learning to write. He subsequently wrote the first novel of his Calderon series, submitted it for publication... and received a rejection slip for it. He was asked if he had written any other manuscripts, and had to be nearly coaxed to submit Storm Front...
... I liked the Calderon series, but it was never the success that the Dresden Files has been.

I'm not sure, but i think it is the humor and the whacky, hapless hero that makes the series. Some really imaginative monsters (with four kinds of werewolves and [so far] three kinds of vampires thus far encountered) and some fairly convolute private detective/mystery plots definitely add to the quality.

He has also written a collection of Dresden Files short stories, titled Side Jobs.

Have to look into FURIES OF CALDERON, thanks. Near the end of "The Sword of Shannara", not grabbing me, so will grab Calderon next :)
Ive also been listening to the Dresden Audio series read by James Masters, he does a realy good job. It is nice and colorful.
So might have the next book this Summer, thats great.
:)

Yeah, I'm a fan of Dresden after the watching the season on tv many moons ago.  Also started reading the books recently and I quite like the sense of humour.  I just finished reading Blood Rites.  I'll take a break from the series for a while and get back into it after I read a couple of other books.

I've recently seen the trailer for the 2nd fan-film (titled 'Red Sun')... it looks pretty good.

The 1st fan film (titled'Night Light') had a few flaws in it -- the combat choreography in the sole fight scene was lame -- but heyyyyyy... it's a FAN film.

Ha ha! I loved the opening line in 'Blood Rites': "The building was burning, and it wasn't my fault...". So very Harry.

The fan films take place around Book 10 or 11 in the series. Worth a view, when you've read that far.

I didn't even know there was a TV series but I listened to the entire book series on audiobook when I had a long commute. Great series & the narrator was awesome. I guess I'll have to check out the TV show.

Yes, the narrator, James Marsters, is very good. Curiously, he played the quasi-villain vampire named 'Spike' on the tv series "Buffy The Vampire Slayer". He has a terrific voice for audiobooks.
