Aussie Burnzy's first grow log

G'day,
 
So Im starting this early (really early),
 
We are in the lead up to winter in Melbourne but preparation should always start early. Fair to say nothing of mine has started yet, let alone finished. It's not my first year growing peppers but it is my first year growing more exotic peppers.
My inspiration came from tasting reaper paste. HOLY SH!T Ba!!$ that was hot! But I liked it. Now I cant get enough. Sad but true....
 
I really want to start this log so I can keep track of updates for myself. I've seen so many awesome logs on here that I kinda feel like I need this to keep it all in one place myself. So it's not about you, it's about me lol.

On top of this I have a few things I want to test. Im a beginner folks so what happens happens. I have some plants that are doing OK this year that I want to try seeds from and overwinter. "Not isolated...nothing special...really just to see what will happen. Aldo have a handful of dare I say supermarket seeds. C'mon man supermarket seeds are cool as! They're free and that fits well with me. If they come out true then even better.

What I will be trying:
Butch T From Chilli Factory - Will also try to overwinter this one.
Orange Habanero From Bunnings
Red Habanero From Coles...We will see.
 
I currently have a fridge that was highjacked at an earlier stage and met face to face with a grinder and now has 2 'vent' holes either side of it. (makes some ripper salami and killer Prosciutto) and now has a new life of growing seed. Currently in testing but here it is:

Been finding a few of these guys in the front garden lately. The mother must have left her eggs on one of the leaves. Glad to say they are a welcome visitor! Hope I can keep them around! If you can't see it look for the praying mantis. Only about 4cm long so still a baby. 

Garden is looking good mate.  I was super excited when I found my first one too - have spotted a couple since, and whenever I find them in the garden they go straight on the chillies.

Although I have to say..I'm a bit jealous that you able to grow in your Front yard and not have your Pods mysteriously go "missing" overnight.

Garden is looking good mate.  I was super excited when I found my first one too - have spotted a couple since, and whenever I find them in the garden they go straight on the chillies.

All the ones I've found seem to be on the cillies anyway, or maybe that's just because I like looking at the chilli plants . It feels good to know they are sticking around though. Found 2 today. I haven't seen a single aphid since early spring. I let celery go to seed and the ladybirds decided it was a very suitable home. Happy days!

Thanks HR64! You would be surprised! Our species has taken a strange direction. Most people would prefer to pay top $ for organic fruit and veg in a shop than have it for free. I have loads of Tomatoes out the front as well and the only thing that occasionally touches them is the odd crow! I'm starting to prepare for my winter vegies which will mostly go out front with the addition of a few more beds. We tend to waste our front yards with grass and inedible plants so my aim is to have a very clean landscape design front rotating vegie patch and hopefully change peoples perception of their front yards.

A few years ago I was running my own business importing from China. Each time I went there I noticed they don't waste their land. You would see larger homes with rows of rice arranged per person. So if 4 people were in the home there would be 4 lot's of rice and enough for that person to feed them for the year. You would see front yards of just bare dirt with rows of cabbage, lettuce, carrot etc. It made me realise we are doing something drastically wrong. I have nothing against hedges and grass etc to make a front yard look nice, I just think it's a waste of useful land in a time where blocks are only getting smaller. I also think that once I'm finished building everything it will look as good as any other yard. I strongly encourage you to give it a try!

I've been a little slack with posting updates lately. Started a new job last week so life up until then was a little hectic.
 
Thankfully though I've managed to get some ripe pods to enjoy.

Thai Sweet Chilli sauce made with 10% Red Moruga and 40% cayanne peppers - A seriously nice sauce!!

Thanks for looking! It's been great seeing the other aussie glogs pulling some amazing pods and I'm looking forward to watching our northern brothers and sisters over the next 7 months while I wait for a bigger and better crop later in the year!

Well done, mate.  Looks like you've had a good crop so far.  Maybe another month to go for us down here.

Looks sweet Burnzy, there's some gnarly pods in that lot. Your Thai volunteer looks very similar to a Tabasco  cross I have going.

Thanks man! Last year I was picking pods in to early May before they lost flavour and heat so hopefully it will be the same this year.

 Cheers Bumper. Yeah I think I will cover this bed with the pop up greenhouse used earlier in the year to hopefully have a successful overwinter. Some of the unproductive plants will come out and put in pots to see if they have a better year next season or if they just won't produce they are off to the compost.

The original mother of these was bought at the markets. It was sold as a thai chilli but honestly who knows? The mother was small and loaded with pods. Nothing likes these monsters by comparison. No chance of a cross from my backyard as the seeds were produced 2 years ago and was the only capsicum variety in the yard at the time. Thye certainly look different to the mother so quite possibly a genetic change from earlier generations. Either way, I like these chillies. They have some excellent heat and suitable to make a few goodies for friends and family.
