Basic sauce. How to...?

What are the basic ingredients for a hot sauce?

I have never made one, so have no point of reference, and can't even experiment...:oops:
 
I leave just a little bit on, and mash it all up resulting in a white-ish mixture with little tiny black chunks. :D
This works amazingly well with any eggplant, but the sweeter kinds are the best.
