favorite Best Substitute for Hatch chiles (Favorite Anaheim variety)

I'm ashamed to admit I've never heard of a Hatch chile. I've since learned that Hatch is where they're grown and by most www info I've gathered the variety is an "anaheim" type chile.

So, I ask you professional chile heads what's your favorite seed stock to get me close?

Some years back I grew some from Harris Seeds which were crazy productive in zone 6

I'm growing saved seeds from "Hatch" chiles this year. These were grown in Hatch Valley, mine won't be. I believe they are Big Jim.

Frantically searching (not quite, but excitedly) I came across this company. Seems like a safe bet. Just placed an order for some Hatch. Now I have to order Big Jim as well.
I'm stoked ! (And yes, I have several death upon contact chiles growing as well)

Yah, Big Jim, Numex, even just Anaheim (which is Hatch). The Hatch label is more about where they're grown than much else.

Grown up north, I can't call 'em Hatch, but......

Can't recommend this site enough. Top quality seeds, and the $5 is damn near a lifetimes supply of seeds!

I grow seeds I got from a student at work. His family is from 15 miles from Hatch. He said that his family has grown them for generations. I'm sure I have plenty to trade. I'll put a pic up once photobucket quits acting up

Anaheims are actually New Mexico type peppers that were taken out to California years ago and grown there, so it is more accurate to just call them New Mexico types. I think the best varieties are Heritage Big Jim, Sandia Select and Barker's Hot, but there are many, many varieties. Check out all the information at the Chile Pepper Institute.

Big Jim, plus many other spicy New Mexican anaheim varieties. If it's a spicy anaheim grown in Hatch, it's a Hatch chile, regardless of it's specific cultivar.

I grew up 20 minutes from Hatch, and also consumed massive amounts of the delicious peppers in NM growing up. They are delicious.

This year im growing New Mex 64s and hoping to find some Lumbre in the future too.
