BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

982.jpg

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

... I'm going in 6 different directions and have early onset of CRS....

Hmmm, not sure what that is, but it must have something to do with chile consumption, or lack thereof. Thanks for the Chilefest invite! Will check out your postings in the Events forum and see about time frame and let you know if can do.

Brandon no doubt will need a truck to bring his pods to this C-Fest the way he is going....

CRS= Can't Remember Schtuff ;)

So, Brandon, can we count on you for the fresh chiles? just kidding, I know you can't plan on anything growing for sure. Those cayenne-type chiles you brought last year were HUGE!

Hope you can make it, Siliman.

Thanks Homie. I ordered a bag. I have 2 50 cell trays of rapid rooters, and I am gonna be doing a 50 cell flat of the Hoffman's to do a bit of an experiment. Thanks for the link.

No they havent, Brandon. I don't think they will either, because in the beginning I let the tops of some of my plugs dry out, therefore killing the embryo I'm afraid. No biggie, I still have seeds of most varieties and will try them again at a later point. How's it going with your younglings? :)

Stefan

Hey Stefan, I did that with my trial n error seeds over the summer.. I've made sure to be really anal about making sure that doesn't happen lol. My younglings are doing just fine :) I know its only 15 days in but I'm throwing in the flag with the few varieties that haven't popped yet.. I'm only missing one variety that I REALLY wanted to grow.. So I'm happy :)

Thanks Brandon. One bag Hoffman's rolling via Amazon. Been hankering to try this since AJ recommended last year. He had a quote something like "It's all about the root ball..." And my crappy starter mix last year (really coarse homemade stuff) made for a lousy root ball so I'm trying to eliminate all possible boo-boos.

Will be watching your reports and the PNW weather with interest. Happy Grow Year....

Thank you :) You n me both, I'm gonna be watching the weather channel more than I have in my entire life this year lol. I hope its hot! so far I can tell the soil is great.. The roots are already coming out of the bottom of the cells, they're all barely getting there first leaves too so that's really fast root growth. Good luck on your grow as well!

Looking good Brandon. I was curious as well where you are gonna put all these babies when they get bigger? Almost perfect germination rates.

I'm going to take over our kitchen next pot up, then I'm going to take over my front n backyard lol. My wife burns easy so my daughter n I are the only ones that spend alot of time outside in the summer, even at 18months old she already loves pepper plants n pods so shes okay with it too :)

Wise Man, stc! Q to you and Brandon, or who-ever...can't you plant a few marigolds, or violets or something in the pots around the peppers? I'm not an experienced grower enough to answer that. Just trying to keep the ladies happy also.

Siliman, has anyone contacted you about the NW Chilefest in September? You're close enough, you could make it. And I apologize if I did and don't remember. I'm going in 6 different directions and have early onset of CRS.

Ann, Marigolds smell like pee and geraniums are for old people. Im just kidding.. not really though. Don't worry, I bring plenty of flowers home from work, believe it or not I like flowers.. I hate annual flowers but I have plenty of passion flowers, honeysuckles and perrenial flowers at home. I think I enjoy them more than my wife does honestly lol..

Hmmm, not sure what that is, but it must have something to do with chile consumption, or lack thereof. Thanks for the Chilefest invite! Will check out your postings in the Events forum and see about time frame and let you know if can do.

.Honestly Ann? I know you say your just kidding but I was already planning on supplying. If all goes well of course.. and if this grow op doesn't I'll be one POed man for a very long time lol. I'd love to supply a couple of everything I'm growing so people can take some home n such.. I can almost guarentee you I won't be making it the the PNWCF this year unfortunately, it was hard enough to get that weekend off last year I doubt they'll let me this year. So I really want to do everything I can to help out. Early September (which I think is when the PNWCF is if I remember correctly) I hope to have pods by then with the early start n all.. weather permitting, we shall see! But seriously.. count on pods!

Thanks Homie. I ordered a bag. I have 2 50 cell trays of rapid rooters, and I am gonna be doing a 50 cell flat of the Hoffman's to do a bit of an experiment. Thanks for the link.

No problem Matt :)

Great start mate , ill be watching this one also , Good luck with everything .

Thanks dude Been watching yours! Good luck to you as well. Don't forget, I'll be hitting you up this fall with if all goes well!

Thanks again for watching everyone.

Brandon

Alright.. Last seed sprout update I promise!

I'm sure I'll have a small few pop in the next 5 days but for the most part.. the sprout party is all over. and I'm fine with that :)

Brandon

Hey, Brandon, what is your nute strategy for your little seedlings? No, not Nute the candidate, the fertilizer rate and type....

HGH and DBOL, but he is gonna say some sissy stuff like progrow or worm castings. You havent fooled me Brandon.

WOW!! 92% Right on B! Thats awesome! Keep it up! This is going to be an amazing year for you. :)
Aaron

I hope your right Aaron! unless something terrible happens, I think it's all gonna boil down to the crazy f****** weather here in the NW. I really hope we have a nice spring n summer. Were WAY over due for one. whats it been.. 5 years?

WOW! Man your grow list of supers is amazing!
Cant wait to see all of these peppers!!

Kevin

Thanks Kevin! I figured I'd switch up my grow this year.. I always grow the same shit year after year.. I've never grown 70 varieties of supers and 200 plants so I think I accomplished the switch up lol. 40 plants has gotten a bit boring for me so I thought I'd quadruple it :D

Hey, Brandon, what is your nute strategy for your little seedlings? No, not Nute the candidate, the fertilizer rate and type....

I actually am going to be using fish fertilizer on the seedlings 5-1-1, 1/4 strength, every other week until they're big enough to handle more. I'll be starting to juice them this week now that the first leaves are coming in really nicely and the roots are all over the place :)

HGH and DBOL, but he is gonna say some sissy stuff like progrow or worm castings. You havent fooled me Brandon.

Damn it Matt, I almost had you!

One thing I can promise you and everyone else.. You will never see me talk about and/or do this grow, using anything to do with worms, homemade organic teas, soils, or compost lol.. I'm sure it works great n all as I've seen here on THP but I simply don't have the time for it, and I see the same results with less labor intensive ways of fertilizing, with 200 plants, hell even 40, I'm all about less labor intensive ways of doing things :D If I was retired, you bet your ass I'd be making everything homemade. Just not in the cards right now :)

Thanks for watching!

Tomorrow I will be posting an update with pictures n such.. I'd do it tonight but pictures with no natural lighting look like crap :)
So tomorrow it is!
Brandon

Brandon
Well Brandon that all depends on how subjective one is regarding the term "labor intensive"... I'll admit, going to the store and buying chemicals is much easier than going fishing, catching triple your trout limit in the N Ga Mountains, then using the guts and heads as the base for a brewed tea. having said that...you're wrong about one thing... the results! In no way can chemicals produce bigger, healthier plants than organics :) I'll challenge anyone on that one! :)

I knew before I even made that comment that I'd be getting your attention asap lol, I forget one thing though.. I won't be using chemicals, I'll be using organic ferts just.. premade ones :) I won't be challenging you on anything to do with ferts or growing there mr. 7foot tall fatalii. That's a battle lost before it was started lol. Anywho, the day that I do end up having time to make my own organic ferts, I'll be hitting you up for advice, just like I needed to with aphids my friend :D

The ButchT that I started very late in the seasons doing suprisingly well

New growth on the Fataliis
IMG_1068.jpg

I noticed that all the seedlings had roots growing out the bottom of the cells, I'm watering from the bottom so I wanted to find an easier way to water without having to lift the cells up and possibly damaging the roots.

Solution!

Regular drinking cup.
Pull the side of the flat out.
IMG_1064.jpg

3 full glasses of water will raise the water level of a flat 1/4inch :)
IMG_1065.jpg

Kinda silly but It does help, it's faster and I don't have to lift seedlings up out of the flats everytime they need water.
Just a small tip for anyone new to this I guess.

Thanks for watching
Hope everyone's having a great year so far :D

Brandon

Excellent progress Brandon! I have enjoyed the "short break" from last year's grow. Looking at your thread makes me realize that I need to get the seeds out and get back to work...pronto. Who knows, the weather may just be kind to us this year.

Hey Brandon,

Nice growth on the OW's. and those seedlings are coming up nicely for only the 3rd wk.

I like the amount of space you have in the yard........... ............... Man I'd start some more seeds if I had that kind of yardage!.............

Bottom watering is the way to go....................no watering can with a spout? You can dilute some ferts. easily in a 2 gal can.

Greg

Nice bro! Way to improvise!

Very impressive young man, you got it going on this year for sure, you will certainly have you hand full this summer and with lots of pods come fall.

If you don’t mind me asking, what is your set out date? I wish I could start mine this early.

On the watering thing, I normally leave one cell empty and cut the bottom out, that way I can water through it and keep an eye on the level as well, for what it’s worth ;)

Good luck to you this season and will be watching you. Keep up the great work!

Sweet seedlings Brandon, and yes, it is nice to see the flowers for your lovely bride. :)

One other quick hint for watering the trays.........["funnel"] .......;)

Ya know, your back yard looks about the same size as Alabama Jack's.........

Looking great dude. That T Scorp is gonna be a monster! She looks ready to get in the dirt under that warm sun! BTW the t scorp I sent you was off the original Butch T 6 yr old mother. I read you saying something about the tails...lol yeah that pepper is a good one! All the peppers you got were from the mothers, so they are the goods :) Enjoy this season my freind and happy growing! You're gonna kill it! I can feel it. Grow on
