BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

Excellent progress Brandon! I have enjoyed the "short break" from last year's grow. Looking at your thread makes me realize that I need to get the seeds out and get back to work...pronto. Who knows, the weather may just be kind to us this year.

Thanks Richard! I have this problem where I always have to be doing something, I cant sit still, I talk too much.. I think there's a name like ADHD or something or other  and left untreated you have a big hyper fire ball kinda like myself so I was fidgeting waiting to get mine starting during the break lol. I hope to have my hands full for the rest of the year :D You should do a growlog with yours this year, just a thought anyway. I hope you are right about the weather, hell all we need is this abnormally sunny/dry winter weather to just carry on into spring n summer. That would make me one happy guy.

Hey Brandon,

Nice growth on the OW's. and those seedlings are coming up nicely for only the 3rd wk.
I like the amount of space you have in the yard........... ............... Man I'd start some more seeds if I had that kind of yardage!.............
Bottom watering is the way to go....................no watering can with a spout? You can dilute some ferts. easily in a 2 gal can.
Greg

Thanks Greg, I'm scared to fertilize the seedlings, I don't want them exploding and getting too big before plant out lol. Thanks for the yard compliment, You'd be suprised that's actually a 1/5 of the entire yard lol. a 1/5 of it is unusable for growing due to shade issues but for the most part I got some prime real estate for my starts :D I'll have pictures of the whole deal during plant out, I'm sure I'll be posting some videos too. I have 6 watering cans actually all for fert purposes last year, I would use that instead but I literally cant fit in the closet so I'd have to take all the flats out in order to do it, takes the same time as not moving em and using a drinking glass.. your right though, they are perfect for fertlizing..

Nice bro! Way to improvise!

Thanks :)
Very impressive young man, you got it going on this year for sure, you will certainly have you hand full this summer and with lots of pods come fall.
If you don’t mind me asking, what is your set out date? I wish I could start mine this early.
On the watering thing, I normally leave one cell empty and cut the bottom out, that way I can water through it and keep an eye on the level as well, for what it’s worth
Good luck to you this season and will be watching you. Keep up the great work!

Thank you very much. Thats my plan, I want to be knee deep in pods this fall and busy as all hell this summer :D I try to spend every nice day outside during the spring n summer and this hobby definitely makes sure that happens. Set out date technically speaking is April 1-30th weather permitting.. With my greenhouses I'm shooting for March, again, the day in march will also be weather permitting but it will be early non the less. I figure the sun won't be as strong either so while I'm hardening off the chances of sun burn will be less. I'm hoping anyway. That's a good tip with the missing cell! I'll be using that one next year. Thanks for stopping by btw :)

Those babies look great especially your overwintered plants one look like it is getting ready to set a flower on the 6th picture.

Thank you! I'm surprised how well they're doing for no arti light. They actually have been flowering since I brought them inside in October lol. They mostly just bloom.. n fall off.. I'm pretty sure the measly 5 hours of sunlight they get a day isn't enough for them to set fruit. I just pull them off anyway, Id rather them concentrate on growing new shoots for springtime :)

Sweet seedlings Brandon, and yes, it is nice to see the flowers for your lovely bride.
One other quick hint for watering the trays.........["funnel"] .......
Ya know, your back yard looks about the same size as Alabama Jack's.........

Thank you! The funnel idea did cross my mind lol.. Everytime I'm at the store though I always end up forgetting to go buy one, if they had funnels in the same isle as beer than this would never be a problem  I'm suprised at the yard comments! Just like I said to Greg you guys are in for a surprise this spring cause that picture covers shows only a 5th of the yard space we have. The front yard is just as big and gets the same ammount of sunshine :D I do remember seeing AJ's, they are alot alike.

Looking great dude. That T Scorp is gonna be a monster! She looks ready to get in the dirt under that warm sun! BTW the t scorp I sent you was off the original Butch T 6 yr old mother. I read you saying something about the tails...lol yeah that pepper is a good one! All the peppers you got were from the mothers, so they are the goods Enjoy this season my freind and happy growing! You're gonna kill it! I can feel it. Grow on

Thanks Rich! Those T scorps (I have another that is identical) have already had a very hard life, they almost died twice from bugs and fungus, at one point both didn't have a single leaf on em. I'm pretty sure this year they're gonna wanna come back swinging. That is very good to know that those were butch Ts all along I thought they were just regular TS's, and they came off the mother? They're gonna be monsters for sure! Thanks again dude, I hope I do!

"they almost died twice from bugs and fungus, at one point both didn't have a single leaf on them"

Quick question about the fungus, I had a Bhut plant a few summers ago. It never produced during the summer (combination of things I didn't do). Anyway, I brought it indoors and eventually it got fungus on it. I would pick it out and it would just come back. It eventually died but not from the mold. Is there a better way of handling this? Should I have just repotted it with new soil?
Thanks
Aaron

Im calling it now, 35+ pages. Heres how I can tell. Even if nobody posts, youll still talk. Something we all can count on. Keep talking Brandon, keep talkin.

Yep...got em from the man himself :)

That's good to know Rich, That means I'll have Butch Ts growing from 3 different sources. It'lll be interesting to see which is hotter :)

Fungus is a nasty deal or any bacterial disease for that matter. You can pick off the leaves, repot it, whatever, and the plant will still be sick. You gotta treat it.. You could get the heavy duty spray at homedepot, lowes, etc but it's some pretty bad stuff.. they come with a little booklet that has like 1272 warnings on it, can't touch it, can't inhail it, can't eat anything on the plant for 2 weeks, can't let any pets touch it, you get the picture.. I use Bonide Citris Fruit and Nut Orchard Spray. It's just sulphur and pyrethrins, it's basically organic, and you can use it up until the day you harvest. Works like a charm and it's a one two punch, takes out any diseases and bugs :)

Your wrong about one thing!.......

35+ pages?? phhhhhht...
Talk about a low ball.

It's gonna be atleast 50+
And that's if nobody but me posts!

Don't forget I've watched your videos.
I'm not the only one that likes to talk around here

Great start! I can't imagine planting that many seeds. I am very interested to see what the 7 Bubblegum is. Sounds like something kids would love to grow but not necessarily eat. :) As for the pages, I'm saying about 40 and that's a great thing. Responding to everyone is fantastic and keeps people engaged in your grow. I will be checking every couple days from here on end.

Looking good, Brandon. How are your SB7J's coming along? Mine aren't doing really great, they still haven't gotten their first real set of leaves.

Hmmmm, caution, silly chilehead math forthcoming.....

less than one month of BigCedar's glog and it's already at 5 pages, extrapolating the basis... estimate 7 pages per month X (dec2011-to-Oct2012=11)= 77 pages!

:D

Should we start a poll/contest for how many pages Brandon's g-log will be? but then people will post or not post to support their guess~~~ OK- nevermind~~~

Looking really nice.

Thank you very much :)

Thanks B, great info! I'll keep it mind if I start fighting with it again. Thanks
Aaron

No problem and anytime dude :) Honestly just have some of that shit stock piled ready for the problem. I just ordered 3 bottles of it because I know at somepoint aphids will be showing up, and I know if we have a spring anything like our last I'll be having some bacterial problems, the quicker you nuke the problem the better!

Thank you very much! Honestly the one 7 bubblegum that I had pop is the one sprout I have that isn't looking too hot. I doubt it was anywhere near stable and it was just given a catchy name for marketing purposes.. When I recieved the seeds, along with the "naglah" seeds (same source, none sprouted) I thought they looked like seeds that were product of machine dehydrated pods, which isn't good for seed viability b.c it basically cooks them (I might be wrong but either way 0/8 seeds is not a good ratio..) My friend Jack (superhot) is also going to try them out in February along with the Naglahs.. It'll be interesting to see what happens with that, those 2 had the worst germination rates out of everything. Anyway. I don't care how many pages or views I get, I just know that people love growlogs as do I, Fun to keep up on so I figured I'd do one being this is my first BIG grow. Thanks for the compliment about responding to everyone, glad it's being noticed :D I figure if you're gonna take the time out of your day to tell me how I'm doing, give me some tips, or compliment me on something it deserves a response even if it is a simple thank you.

Looking good, Brandon. How are your SB7J's coming along? Mine aren't doing really great, they still haven't gotten their first real set of leaves.

Thanks Stefan! They're doing alright, I haven't had a sprout of anysort in 2 days so I'm callin it quits on any remaining. Germ-rate for me was 2/4 and they both have JUST started showing the first set of leaves.. I noticed for some reason that they are veryyyy slow growing.. atleast starting out anyway. As long as your starting leaves are still there n healthy don't worry, you'll get em eventually.

Ann there's very few posts of yours that haven't made me laugh lol. Psssst. It won't be over until december with the OW process n such
No polls! lol, I know your kiddin n all but I really don't care how many pages there is, I really just wanna give people something to watch n hopefully anyone new will learn a thing or two. I'm not anywhere near as skilled as many on this forum, but I am trying my luck at it this year! I wouldn't be able to do any of this without the help, tips, seeds, and support of this great forum. Not tryin to be cheesy, but it is very true! Honestly I cannot believe that my GL has gotten this much attention so far. It's got me a little nervous actually, I really hope I'm successful lol.

Thanks again everyone for watching

I love checking your log.I learn unexpected info I didn't even know I wanted to know. And I learn the stuff I need to know also.Keep it up,you can only help my plants!

Wow.... impressive is all I can say really. I will be following with interest and a slight touch of envy of a great outdoor grow space. Best of luck bro. Enjoy yourself! !

Holy cow! I'm new to growing peppers myself. Last summer was my first; just a few grown. But, man, you have a ton you are growing. What do you do with them all? I mean, I could see drying some and of course eating some. But, that almost looks like too many to manage. :)

BTW, they look great!

Take care.

I agree with SL. Also, if you look around, 1st posts arent on many other GLogs...If there were an honor roll for GLogs, you would be on your way to sitting atop that beach.

I'm glad to hear to it dude :D I thought the extra detail would be more annoying than anything so I'm glad I was wrong lol. Best of luck with your first grow!

Thanks man. I appreciate it. I'll be posting some full backyard pictures tomorrow minus the plants that will soon take up my backyard (hopefully) Best of luck to you too my friend.

Hey helldozer. Welcome to THP! :D It's a great place. If you only grew a few last year.. spend a little time here and I can almost guarentee you'll be growing a little more than a few this year. I blame this place for my new obsession lol. The biggest grow I've done so far was 40 pepper plants and 40 tomato plants, along with a good dozen exotic flowers, berries, and other veggies.. I really wanted to turn up the heat (no pun intended) on the pepper plant grow this year. I just find them so much more interesting than your average tomato plant or cucumber.. They are also more of a challenge to grow, which I like. I was bored last year with my 40 plants. I'm hoping 200 has me busy. As for what I'm going to do with them all? ( IF I'm successful ) I'm going to be freezing, drying, deseeding, and eating them. Other than that? Anyone that has helped me out before will be getting free pods or seeds if they want them. I will be sending some out for video reviews if anyone wants to do one. And I'll be giving out seeds this fall if all goes well :) just like people did for me!

lmao.
Matt.. Were buddies n all so I don't want to see you have to use humor to cover up your jealousy.. It's okay dude.. you'll get a 1st post this year too! I have a good feeling about it.. Just keep posting your how-to videos because by the end of this year there might be aTHP Growlog Cinematography Award.. And let's face it, you and I both know nobody will stand a chance against you. I wouldn't even enter as a contestant

Oh Btw! What you said about me in your growlog.. I can't let you post something like that, have someone click on my link, and not see an update like clockwork.. Not only would that be bad form but then you'll look like your full of it, you don't know what your talking about, nobody will check out your GL, views will drop dramatically, etc.. I can't have that. Not on my watch buddy! So true to form..

Tommorow! Brandon's Weekly Update! With Pictures!

Thanks, appreciate it! Yeah, in the off-season I've purchase a number of seeds. Last year I grew two early jalapenos, a serrano, orange hab, two lemon cucumbers, and an orange bell pepper. This year, here is what I have slated with some already started :)

bhut jolokia (sown)

devil's tongue (sown)

Goats weed (sown)

orange habanero (sown)

jamaican hot chocolate (sown)

trinidad scorpion (sown)

manzano (sown)

Ace Sweet Bell Pepper (Red)

Sweet Chocolate Bell

Orange Sweet Bell

Cayenne Chile

jalapeno goliath

serrano (sown)

tepin (sown)

tabasco

Lemon Cucumber

I realized after I bought some, that they were hybrids and what that meant. So, I won't be doing that again. I want to be able to continue planting my own seeds. :) The ones I didn't sow I figured were faster starters and wouldn't need as much of a head start. The exception is the serrano I started, because I wanted to give it to my dad sooner than later.

Sad part is that I'm not sure I'll have enough room for all of these. Especially when they become seedlings.

Take care.

Hey, cool. Growlog inside of growlog. Top that MGold!

And how does Helldozer have 0 posts showing and he's posted twice already?

Anyway, welcome Helldozer! You've come to the right place. I think....
