Black Eyed Peas

Every since I can remember I've had Black Eyed Peas for New Years. They're supposed to bring you good luck in the New Year. This may just be a Southerner thing I don't know. But I've never done without 'em !! Some years in my life have been so bad I'd hate to think what would have happened without them !!!

Mine are way different than what Granny started me off with . I don't really have a recipe for mine. If I have Ham left over from Christmas .. in it goes. If not Andouille sausage or some times both ! Beside those I use onions , bell peppers , garlic , hot peppers like Jolly Penos or some other of choice. I use a Creole type of spice mix in it. I use chicken broth instead of tap water too.

We always make cornbread to go with this. Can't wait .......

Anyone else do something like this ?

Peace & the Best to ALL in the New Year,
P. Dreadie

Black Eyed Peas, the staple food of Lancashire (uk) in autumn/winter ... and yet I can't buy them here ( in the afore mentioned Lancashire [uk]) as our supermarkets don't stock them ... can get all sorts of weird and wonderful shit, from all over the globe, but not black eyed peas :(

Here we just boil them up ( no ham or stuff ... gonna have to try your version :D ), slap them in a tub/cup, drench them with vinegar and eat ... then reheat the remains in the pan the next day ( add more water if required ), rinse and repeat.

Yep. Black eyed peas, posole, tamales are all New Year's Traditions with my family. My wife made some black eyed peas (beans) the other day. It was my midnight snack last night and of course I had to add Bhut Jalokia dust. We keep it pretty simple and don't add much, except for maybe ham and a few spices. Check out Adobe Milling from Dove Creek, Colorado for the BEST.. Black Turtle Beans and Anasazi pinto beans are what we get. Very addictive and much better than any canned beans.

Yabba ... so you guys on the other side of the big pond like Black Eyed Peas .. who'd a thought . In Lancashire they can't be much of a staple if the markets don't have them ! That's like Texas having beef as a staple and none to be had ..

I'm guessing you use mostly fresh Black Eyed Peas ... am I right ? Here they are kinda' a staple and you can get dried year round. Dried ones do taste a little different but they make a great gravy with the ham , spices , and onion, etc. Here you don't find fresh ones much except this time of year.

Peace,

chileaddic .... posole and tamales always sound good !! Tamales are to much work for me .... I tried twice. Still love them so I get 'em from the little Mexican Tamale Lady. She's the Pro and no work except warming them up .

Canned Black Eyes are just a get by. No matter what you add to them. Better than none when you want some but I like to cook dried ones. I can start adding flavors from the start. Then when I'm done I have Black Eyed Peas in a rich tasty gravy. It's so good your bowl and spoon are clean before you wash them !!

Peace,

Is that a typo?

anyway thanks for the reminder, just added them to the shopping list!
Happy New Year to you also!

Corned beef....cabbage.....and a big pot of black-eyed peas w/ the ham hock I've been saving from the holiday country ham....

....yeah, that's the ticket!

Serve it with hot chow-chow, diced onions, and hot and steamy cornbread. YUMMMMMMMM!!!!!

I don't know if it's ever brought me luck.....but it sure keeps me warm through the 2nd!

That was a fart joke.

picked up the peas and ham today, gonna have to use the kimchi in the fridge for the cabbage part of it.

After eating prime rib for 3 days straight, ham and beans is sounding mighty good.

it's all good P.Dreadie- Thanks to your inspiration, BEP's are on the menu tomorrow! :woohoo:

Pauly,
Yea, prime rib dips and sandwiches were good, just didn't need to hear the F-I-L complain that he'd grabbed a bone to eat, but it wasn't a bone, it was a chunk of meat.~~~

AW, Well! We're back home in the freezing cold now and all is well.

Black Eyed Pea wishes to ALL for a WONDERFUL 2011!

We can get them in the markets, our nearest decent one is about 60 miles away though. It's the big supermarkets where we can't get them even though we can get all sorts of other crap from around the world ;)

Like you ours are dried and we can buy them by the sack, which is what we tend to do when we visit the market. Those and black puddings, nothing tastes like Bury black pudding :D

I've never thought of putting ham and spices in though, really will have to try that next time I make a pot.

Hmmmmm, based on your pics it looks like I'm confusing my black peas with my black eyed peas :-S my excuse is that I'm blonde :D

Looks like a great dish SL and I'm still going to try something similar the next time I do black peas ;)
