CaneDog 2019 Hirsute Pursuit – Rocotos, Wilds & Moar

So, here's the new glog for the coming season.  With the indoor grow culled pretty hard now I can focus more on getting ready for what's ahead.  Hoping for a great year, but I’m already a bit behind - the germinators are packed right now and I've still got a round of annuum seeds waiting for their turn.  I guess it wouldn’t feel much like pepper growing though if everything were going perfect.

My focus was going to be rocotos with a side of bonnets and some other stuff, but I found I kept planting more and more wilds. Eventually I just kinda went all-in with them and they took on co-main event status.

I’ll start things off with some pics of some of the earlier pube’s.  There’s not too many at this point. Unfortunately, the vast majority just went into germination.

First off, Costa Rica Red.  This is the CRR with flattened triangular pods.  I also have an OW CRR that’s a 3-4 lobed “boxy” variety.  I didn't get true seeds off this one last summer, so I have a few of these growing and crossing my fingers they grow true.

Rocoto DeSeda.  These guys were from a bush I’d OW’d a few years in a row, but it didn’t make it through this winter

Rocoto San Camillo

Gelbe Reisen Variant.  These are from true seeds off a plant I’ve been growing for a few years that was supposed to be Gelbe Riesen, but the pods are more orange vs yellow, rounder/less boxy, and just a touch smaller. I don’t know if it’s a natural variation or it might have crossed with a Costa Rica Orange, but it's a great plant. I have a few of these started and am curious what comes of them.

Giant Yellow Rocoto.  Suppose I should pinch that bud off.

Recently hatched Gelbe Riesen sprouts (the parent plant has been a beast for me for a while now) and CAP 217 Hyper-Pube.

That’s it for the rocotos for now.  Will try to post up some pics of the early wilds in a little bit.

Thanks Paul.  Been enjoying following your progress - always seems to be so much you have going on.  Mid-june for your annuums huh?  Mine are getting booted out this next week and they'll just have to deal with it!  Definitely something to be said though for planting them into the more consistent warmth and keeping them in stride.

I didn't start the annuums until April 1, so they are not real large
yet, but getting close to plant-out. They aren't a hassle to
move around in the trays at the moment.

We've had a lot of the spotty showers here too.  I thought we were coming out of it this week so I opened up the hoop houses yesterday and..  wait for it...  yep, it's cool and raining this morning...

Oh well.

Cheers
Hey, CD!  We had three days of perfect plant-out
weather, cool and cloudy. A few showers. Then a
couple of days of partly sunny, and today there is
a lot of sun. The first nice sun coupled with mild
(73˚F) temperature. The plants should love it.

Hope your hoop house dries out!.

Following up on past page's aphids photo post - http://thehotpepper.com/topic/71003-canedog-2019-hirsute-pursuit-rocotos-wilds-moar/?p=1633267

I didn't have time to deal with things when I found them so I quickly sprayed off (with water) just that one flower before I had to run.  Then a few hours later I inspected the plant thoroughly and after that just about every single plant on my deck.  Turned leaves over, opened the new growth areas, etc.  Did not find one single aphid or any sign of honeydew.

I still plan to spray with a safe soap solution, but I think I'll go with Castile soap this time and only 1 or 2 rounds of spraying. Seems I was just super lucky to have pulled that plant out to take a picture of a flower bud and happened to see those first few bugs early.

Sneaky little bastages!  I knew there had to be more of them.

So, I went to take a picture of this flower bud yesterday because 2 days ago I'd noticed that though the bud was tightly closed, the stigma was well exposed.  That's when I saw all the aphids on another bud (pics on prior page) and ended up not photographing this one.

I've heard that Cardenasii tend to cross pollinate very readily and I've read studies indicating that while the majority of pepper pollination is self-pollination (at the flower level not just plant level) various factors, including physical structure and development timing of the flower, could have a big impact on whether a given plant would cross or self pollinate.  One study (see below) referenced that a longer style increased the likelihood of cross-pollination, but in this case the stigma was actually outside the flower and the anthers inside for a good 3 days meaning there was no way the flower was going to pollinate itself during this time.  However, provided the stigma was receptive, pollen from another flower, most likely carried by an insect, could.  Granted an insect could carry pollen from another flower on the same plant, but any time an insect is bringing pollen there's a high probability the pollen came from multiple flowers and plants so the resulting pod could contain a mix of both true and crossed seed. Anyhow, it just had me thinking a bit more about the impact of various factors, in this case flower physiology, on the likelihood of true versus crossed seeds.

Here's a good study posted by Kennylay - http://thehotpepper.com/topic/70844-study-on-likelyhood-of-natural-cross-pollination-of-peppers/?hl=cross

Anyhow, the plant remains separate from the herd for now and spraying begins tomorrow. The style was actually even more exposed prior to the bud starting to open than it is in the picture below.

Remember, you can be the bee!  Carry the pollen you want to the flower.  Be the bee!

I be the bee. All winter long. I'm not even going to ask the Darlin' Bride to indulge me with the real thing...though it would be like me to do so.

I have three neighbors who bee-keep for a living. Can't walk barefoot in the back yard when the dandelions are blooming. Ever.

Hi CD, just trying to post here.
Having the 'jump to home page' problem again.

edit: this is crazy. I can post to your grow log, but not to my own.
Makes me want to stop paying for the extreme membership.

Yeah, it's frustrating, especially when you lose a longer post like a glog update.  It seemed to start what, just a couple/few weeks ago?  Seems like that should help pinpoint the cause and lead to a fix - hopefully very soon.

Hope it doesn't slow down your posting too much.  I'm counting on those glog updates!

Hmm, careful there, I don't have any issues with anything but my pepper plants and the weather. Don't jinx us, you two...

Which then caused you to like every post in my glog and propel me into rock star and then on to guru status almost overnight :-)

I'm sure @TheHotPepper is doing everything he can to get the problem solved. Running a huge forum such as this is not easy, especially when you get to huge numbers of posts and uploads.

Hopefully it gets worked out soon.
