CaneDog 2019 Hirsute Pursuit – Rocotos, Wilds & Moar

So, here's the new glog for the coming season.  With the indoor grow culled pretty hard now I can focus more on getting ready for what's ahead.  Hoping for a great year, but I’m already a bit behind - the germinators are packed right now and I've still got a round of annuum seeds waiting for their turn.  I guess it wouldn’t feel much like pepper growing though if everything were going perfect.

My focus was going to be rocotos with a side of bonnets and some other stuff, but I found I kept planting more and more wilds. Eventually I just kinda went all-in with them and they took on co-main event status.

I’ll start things off with some pics of some of the earlier pube’s.  There’s not too many at this point. Unfortunately, the vast majority just went into germination.

First off, Costa Rica Red.  This is the CRR with flattened triangular pods.  I also have an OW CRR that’s a 3-4 lobed “boxy” variety.  I didn't get true seeds off this one last summer, so I have a few of these growing and crossing my fingers they grow true.

Rocoto DeSeda.  These guys were from a bush I’d OW’d a few years in a row, but it didn’t make it through this winter

Rocoto San Camillo

Gelbe Reisen Variant.  These are from true seeds off a plant I’ve been growing for a few years that was supposed to be Gelbe Riesen, but the pods are more orange vs yellow, rounder/less boxy, and just a touch smaller. I don’t know if it’s a natural variation or it might have crossed with a Costa Rica Orange, but it's a great plant. I have a few of these started and am curious what comes of them.

Giant Yellow Rocoto.  Suppose I should pinch that bud off.

Recently hatched Gelbe Riesen sprouts (the parent plant has been a beast for me for a while now) and CAP 217 Hyper-Pube.

That’s it for the rocotos for now.  Will try to post up some pics of the early wilds in a little bit.

Yeah, I hate losing those old good varieties that I remember did so well.  Never intend to let it happen, but the growing gets so busy at certain times together with everything else it just seems to happen.  Good that you have those seeds and hopefully they produce another winner.

I'm going to be watching your glog to see what the patch looks like when you pull the shade cloth.  If you could somehow get an aerial type shot...

I started removing the shade cloth today. One thing is for certain, it will never be any easier than it is right now and the longer I wait, the more damage I'll do to the plants. Man, I found pods that started growing through the shade cloth  when they were small and now they're big pods on the wrong side.

Should I bring out a bigger ladder for the aerial shot or do you want me call google and tell them to get a pic from the satellite? The one they have in Google Earth last time I looked was shortly after I laid down the bales.

I guess I better start unbagging my iso plants if I want to save the bags. This one is getting kinda tight.

Just a quick post of randoms...

Had these CAP 1693 flowers bagged, but managed to break them off at the crucial time screwing around with the little o-bags I'm increasingly disappointed with.  If I hadn't bought 200 of them I'd have been forced to switch horses by now.

Odd pod on the bonchi mahala. Most look normal, but this is a weird one.

Cross of Tekne Dolmasi x Jalapeno Zapotec appears to have set and be growing.

Rio Huallaga set

XL Brown Rocoto x Lucento.  Extruding the corolla, so appears to have set.  Both XL Brown plants are setting pods now and the larger one quite a few. Have several pods bagged for true seed and a few appear to have set.

Tovarii keeps setting, slowly though. Won't set any records at this rate except for the amount of pollen it's dropping.

Right back at ya podz. Between you killing it with the pubes and the deck build and hot tub it's been a good ride in Hel.

Maybe if I were more astute and less hirsute, I'd be able to rattle off your accomplishments as well as you do mine :-) Don't judge me, bro - we all fit in somehow.

Yeah it seemed like it had potential.  I'll take some of the TD size with the JZ kick and great flavor.  We'll have to see how the pepper gods treat me.
I like the way you think. If it comes out well and you have extra seeds, let me know Id love to have some seeds and see how well it does.

Just fantastic photography CD...really great photos & those eyes have it.Wow.
Lovely to see the tov getting to where you want it..that photo of the lance is just a great capture.
Great accomplishment to date & lots of memories to look back on with awe..just fab.
Lots going on...on this here glog...all admirable. ;)

Grabbed a few snapshots at the community garden plot today. Things are really picking up with the better weather this month, just hoping it's not too late for the bulk of the plants.

First bad news, something made a yaki-snack out of my best yaki blue pod.  Was looking forward to doing that myself. The remaining pods are runts due to the crappy weather since I planted it out. The plant's doing much better now though and I'm hoping it still cranks out some good ones.

PdN has some nice pods on it, this being a good one.

BOC which languished inside seems to love the local weather, June gloom (and July gloom this year) and all.

Scotch Bonnet Jamaican Long

Scotch Bonnet Allen Boatman - because there's no way this is actually an "Alan" Boatman. Both the Alan Boatman's I've grown from this seed pack have been crosses, though the last were well-shaped red bonnets.

This is a sweet baccatum from Peru. Cool light immature pods.  Solid production despite not getting stepped up in stride and also the poor weather.

I cut the yaki pod open (the partially munched one in the pic above).  Smells okay, but not fully ripe. I little oily already and definitely hot. Will munch the good half tonight, provided I don't find anything too off-putting inside after snooping around at bit.

I took my Rocopica off-site from where it had been isolated in the front yard.  Didn't want to put it around the rocotos because it's simply too high of a cross potential with all its flowers and pollen.  Moving the Rocopica left a spot open in the front yard, so I moved the USDA Cardenasii into the open spot. The front yard is well isolated from the backyard and I'll usually keep 2 or 3 varieties isolated there, provided there's no risk they cross with one another.  As the pic shows, I removed all the currently open flowers so I can easily track and mark the isolated pods as they set.

Decided since I had all those flowers around I'd run a cross with the usda card as father.  Picked the CAP 1491 Eximium as mother, which has super (super) small buds. Fat-fingered around for a while but managed to clip open and neuter the flower without breaking off the pistil - yeah, it looks a little jacked-up in the pic, but I'm pretty sure it was already that way when I got there    Apparently my hands weren't too steady with the camera either, because I managed to let it shift during the shot.  Still, I thought the effect wasn't too bad.

I think I'll call this shot Aurora Corollealis...
