CaneDog 2020

2020 is underway, so it's time to start the new season's glog!  Odd times though, as I'm still harvesting stragglers from last season while the earliest of my 2020 starts are already up.  Grow areas are a bit disorganized as a result

This season's grow should be a little more balanced than last season, though I'll still have a ridiculous number of rocotos - many OW's plus a bunch of new varieties - and quite a few carry-over OW wilds, too.

A big "thanks" to all who shared seeds with me for this season.  I'm appreciative and excited to have lots of cool varieties in the mix, many of which I got to watch you grow last season and can now try myself.  I think I'm current with everyone, but if by any chance you were expecting seeds from me that may have slipped through the cracks just shoot me a PM.

As I mentioned, things aren't super organized right now, but here's a few pics anyway.

I planted a few seeds early, just because I couldn't hold off the extra few weeks without planting something.

Amarillo de Arequipa Rocoto just popped- Thanks CTB!

Ecuador Sweet Rocoto twins - and a big shout out to the two peeps who sent me seeds for these. Both sources germinated and I'm really happy to have them growing.  Disclaimer: they may look overly wet, but these just got sprayed (to avoid HH's) and it's a very porous medium.

Put another few rocotos in to soak today.

This is a galapagoense that popped a few days back, exactly 100 days after sowing.

And this pod contains Jalapeno Zapotec x Purple Jalapeno F1, one of a couple F1 JZ crosses I'll be growing out this season. The other is Tekne Dolmasi x JZ.

Finally, I got a solid recommendation on a new media mix I'll be trying out this season in a few variations. The mix is heavy in partially composted bark fines, a fir/hemlock mix as pine's hard to get locally. It's proving to be a veritable mycelium factory.  Bodes well for good symbiosis with the appropriate fungal species this year.

Heck, they're even fruiting out the drainage holes...  :)

That's it for now.  Good luck to all in 2020!

Good luck!

I've had good success with rockwool cubes. Some other people swear by the paper towel method. For me, it's rockwool all the way. Just a matter of keeping them moist on a heat mat and you should have good results. The great thing about rockwool is that you can decide what to do with the seedling once it sprouts. Do you like hydroponics? No problem, just dunk it in the drink. Are you more of a soil grower? Same thing.. just put the thing in the ground and you're done... Super easy, and I like easy!

And here's a duck for the PT, because apparently that's a thing here...

I’ve never tried rockwool cubes.   Right now I’m using peat pellets, because I got a little lazy, and their so easy.  On the rockwool you just put the seeds on top, no covering?

The Grodan rockwool cubes have a little hole to put the seed in, as seen above. What I do is to put the seed there and cover it up a little by pushing in around the hole a little. I like that this is a really clean germination method.

I going to the hydro store today. I’m thinking of just putting the seed in the hole, but don’t cover it, just like root riot plugs. That way I can just look in hole to see if any germination. I’m going to try and germinate old seed I have to see if any are viable. Better than throwing them away.

I tend to do more holes with tweezers too, usually 3 seeds/cube.

I had some Ecuador Sweet Rocoto seeds come in from APS today, which means I'll be growing ESR's from 3 sources this year.  it wasn't planned initially, but it will be interesting to see how they compare.  I figured I'd do an informal experiment and put one seed to soak in an H2O2 solution (approximately 1:5 3% H2O2 to distilled water) and one in a standard dilution of sprouted seed tea (unferment).  I'm just curious if they'll be any significant difference in either germination or subsequent growth.  I'll soak them for 12-15 hours then use the scottex method with poly-ports so I can watch what's happening with germination.

I'll be shaking the SST vial periodically to infuse additional O2 into the water, but that still won't get anywhere near the hyper-oxygenation the H2O2 soak will provide.

Anyone want to pick a horse?

So there is a "fermented sprouted seed tea" huh?  Looks like I have more research and learning to do!

Now is this "fermented" concoction for the grower to drink or to help seed germination?

Ha!  I'd have to be pretty dry to drink FSST, but never say never.
You might check out Skullbiker's posts on his FSST as a source of information; that's what got me trying it.  Going to the brew store is an easy shortcut, because the malt producers do the sprouting and quick dry the barley at the ideal time.  Plus a pound of pale malt costs about $1.50 and is enough for something like forty gallons after proper dilution.  Using the low lovibond pale malts is critical, though, because the roasting process will kill off what you're trying to develop.
