I’m not sure if anyone has one of the newer smart TV's that does the apple crap and then some. Plays movies, tunes, files (media) from a portable HD or records to it (Also thumb drives or SD cards), connects to wifi wireless or hardwired, streams video and much more without any box (HTPC, Roku or apple). But that’s an alternative to a box upon your next TV upgrade I guess.

Seems to me that the TV manufacturers will win out over these boxes sooner or later in this type of hardware but this is peanuts to apple IMO. apple only put out the box to get the jump on new hardware which could soon make their box obsolete only to sell you media. That said, media is king and even if the rest of apple goes under, one of their most profitable sectors if not their most is their media division (itunes). Booking over 8 billion dollars a year, that’s more than the most watched TV networks make (i.e. CBS), selling tunes, TV shows, Movies, books, iOS and more. If I was a network top dog I’d be trying to figure out how to beat them or play their game and none have or none have done it right. Sure apple is not booking the dollars that News Corp, Disney or some of the other big boys do in a year but look how long apple’s been around compared to them. If they stay their course, it's only a matter of time ... Trust me dem scared mon!

On another note … seeing how apple tried to fight jailbreaking all the way to the Supreme Court to keep you looked up really set the tone and should open peeps eyes, surprisingly it didn't … and for those that didn’t follow this, you should read back. Fortunately I was into open source and never gave them a penny of my hard earned money. IMO this is akin to me selling you a car (hardware) and telling you that you can’t modify or upgrade the engine (software) and just because my company has the money I’m willing to do everything in my power to keep you locked up further … WTF!

While I don’t care what one uses, IMHO its best to be informed and one of these days everyone could be paying apple one way or another for content even if they stop producing hardware, who knows NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. etc. …

All I know is I plug my "apple crap" in and with minimal effort it "works". I'm sure there is other products out there that do the same thing but simplicity has its place/price.

I bought my parents an AppleTV [slightly used from a school district] for Christmas. They love it. Personally, I am not a huge Apple fan, for reasons that people have stated above. I definitely see their place for some. And that is fine. Right now, I am typing this on Debian Linux, but in the other room, I have 2 Dells running Windows 7, a Dell running Windows XP, a Macbook Pro, and a white Macbook. [Macs and 2 Dells provided by the place I work] -- I have to use and support all 3 of the major operating systems on a daily basis, so I have to stay up on all of them. :)

That said, the Apple TV is a good product for those that don't want to get into the guts of the thing. It makes it easy...

Also, don't get too comfy thinking that you don't have to run antivirus on a Mac. They are just as susceptible, and with the growing popularity, you are going to see more and more malware coming out. There have been a few just in the last year. I have a utility on my computer that will let me take over a Mac just by getting a user to visit a specially crafted website. It takes about 15 minutes to get everything set up and running.
