CMPMAN1974 - 2012 Grow Log - Started 2/26/12

Well, after a long awaited time, I finally got some seeds in dirt this evening. Wow, it took a long time as some of these names of these varieties are long. :) My theme this year...Pequins/Tepins - rare ones & AFRICA. Also, I think some rare Brazilian varieties will be planted too along with some Pubescens in the next few days. I have no idea how germination will be on some of these African varieties, but it should be fun. I enjoy market varieties and odd stuff found off the beaten path.

Here's what I've got sowed to date. Wish me luck!

Chris

Nice shelf/light set-up; didn't even notice the wheels! You have a pretty good selection
of stuff sprouting under the lights. Looks like you have room for a few more trays. Just sayin' : )

Nope, not Wal-Mart. :) I made some contacts at a very large horticultural plastics manufacturer in the past. They hooked me up with some awesome plant trays. :)

digging the 162 cell trays... Guessing those are not from walmart? haha

I'm happy to say I have had no issues whatsoever germinating the original Trinidad Scorpion Morouga Blend Red seed from 2007. Also, all my older seeds are coming up fine. Seeds 6+ years old come up fine. It shows storage methods are key. The only issue I see sometimes with older seeds at some point is the seed hull gets stuck on the tap root end and eventually it cannot thrive. Even that's not much of an issue for the most part, but it does occur.

Yes, don't remind me. I won't be able to resist. :) Open space without plants is a crime, right? :)

Holy crap !!! I counted 145 varieties. Are you starting a seed bank for the prepper crowd !!!
Kidding of course, unless you say otherwise.

Chris, you sold me my trinidad scorpion seeds last year, they are doing fine, about 8 inches tall, thick, lush.

I was the guy from RI you called one Saturday morning if memory serves me correctly. I bought your seeds from Fleabay, and
had a question about shipping which you promptly addressed. Small world, isn't it ?

That is one hell of a bonanza of a variety, I imagine they are not all clustered together,
or the the crosses you will end up with will be mind numbing for sure. The names they could end up with boggle the mind.

Have fun. I can't wait to see all 145 peppers this summer/fall.

Ghosty...

Did you start them in larger trays this year Chris? Your plant out is in May right? What will be the key thing that lets you know it's time to pot them up? Moon phase? Farmer's Almanac advice?

Looking great Chris, really impressive list and setup you have there. I am looking forward to see how the smaller trays work for you.

Just curious, how do do you store your seeds? You obviously have no viability issues after a number of years.

This should be interesting. See the two purple plants? These are from a friend who has been growing an Orange Thai cross from seeds I sent. Apparently, the plant is really cool and it produces black pendant peppers that ripen to a flame red! He says it's a real showstopper. I love the look of the leaves so far.

Also, the seedlings are coming along well for being started in late February. Some have three sets of leaves now, others two. Obviously annuums are much faster growing.

Chris

Sorry. but I think you may be mixing me up with another person as I don't sell pepper seeds on Ebay (and really anywhere else except for my few auctions last year). :) Regardless, I'm glad to hear your Trinidad Scorpion seeds are doing great!

Patrick, my plant out is typically last week of May / first week of June. For me, the key to pot-up will be when the soil is drying out very fast at an uncontrollable rate. I also play around with lighting cycles to slow growth if need be (i.e., 10 on / 14 off as opposed to 14 on / 10 off).

Did you start them in larger trays this year Chris? Your plant out is in May right? What will be the key thing that lets you know it's time to pot them up? Moon phase? Farmer's Almanac advice?

I store my seeds in the fridge in enclosed containers with silica gel packets and other drying materials when possible to keep the temps / moisture as controlled as possible.

Plants are looking good and healthy, Chris. I join the rest by saying I'm also curious about the pods from the purple plants, the patron in the leaves looks awesome already.

Hey, Chris, those pics of the Orange Thai with variegated
leaves is way trick - showstopper, indeed!
The rest of the seedlings look pretty cool, too :D

No, I am sure it was you Chris, maybe it was Amazon, but it doesn't matter, you have some cool plants and they all look healthy.
I am trying to improvise a way to water my now transplanted peppers, including your scorpions. I can not longer water from the bottom of those huge pots so, I bought a small one gallon pressure sprayer, and am going to jury rig the hose to push into the dirt to get at the roots and keep the soil at the top bone dry. I may be crazy, but I think it keeps fungus, bacteria from developing, and larve in the soil from hatching. Only time will tell if I am right. Hope you have a successful season. I will post a picture of it in my grow log. I just gave it a try and it works like a charm, a bit of a pain in the ass to use but worthwhile if it keeps all the bad juju away.

Ghosty...

Sounds interesting, look forward to seeing your invention.

Things are coming along pretty well so far. The plants are picking up size in the 36 count plug trays. Some of these African pepper species grow like weeds. I had to pot up a few that were sowed on 2/26/12! They were 4-5 inches tall! I think the later than normal seed sowing schedule will be just fine.

Lettuce is ready to plant in a couple weeks IF weather permits. The weather definitely took a turn for the cold side relative to a few weeks ago.

I'll post some pictures of the plants this weekend.

Chris
