CMPMAN1974 - 2012 Grow Log - Started 2/26/12

Well, after a long awaited time, I finally got some seeds in dirt this evening. Wow, it took a long time as some of these names of these varieties are long. :) My theme this year...Pequins/Tepins - rare ones & AFRICA. Also, I think some rare Brazilian varieties will be planted too along with some Pubescens in the next few days. I have no idea how germination will be on some of these African varieties, but it should be fun. I enjoy market varieties and odd stuff found off the beaten path.

Here's what I've got sowed to date. Wish me luck!

Chris

It's been a long last couple of days printing off thermal labels and peeling them to stick them on mini blinds! When you get past 200, it gets boring! :) It's the labor intensive time of the year. About 50 more labels to go, more hardening off, and then soon....plant-out time! Tomatoes go into the soil tomorrow. :)

Chris

keep up the good work, you know it always pays of in the long run

when your looking at your rows full of pods, you will understand why you went through all that trouble

thanks your friend Joe

Pepperjam, those are Bibb lettuces. :) I like them a lot. Potawie, my daughter loves the can too. She needs to 'help' me water my plants!

Chris

yes very nice chris

i planted thai basil
sweet basil, red beets, spinach and swiss chard

keep up the good work

lokin great!!

your friend Joe

thats a nice looking lettuce... Here, they take off, and tend to take over (not bib, we have a different variety though).

We started one lettuce seed on the porch - in a container, and by the end of last season we had ~ an ounce of seed, and volunteer lettuce ALL OVER the yard. under the porch, around the porch, coming up in every container within 10 feet... it was nuts. but the lettuce is good, so we didn't complain haha.

Very nice garden, Chris - everything looks delicious!

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of three of my raised beds today (the wood borders) as they were just too rotted. The expense to get new untreated pine wood and ability to transport 12' long planks got to be too much. If I had more cash to drop, I'd use cedar or another longer lasting wood. I wouldn't touch any treated wood in an area I plant edibles.

I converted one row to a 'mounded bed'. It should be interesting to see how it performs relative to the others. I'll miss the clean borders of the enclosed wooden beds, but...... Dropping $50 per raised bed in materials every 3-4 years gets expensive for a 'hobby.' I've seen a lot of productive mounded raised beds over the years so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Chris

This weekend is PLANTING TIME. Let the good times roll. Into the ground the hot peppers go. Finally!! I better get the shovel oiled up and ready. lol.

Chris

Your mounded bed should perform great. It will breath better than before,
and you can even grow low cover crops on the sloped sides of the bed!
Certainly not as convenient, for sure, however!

Good growing to you this summer!

Everythings looking great Chris. Nice yard! I like the wide array of stuff your growing, sounds just like my yard.
If we were neighbors neither of us would be shopping at the grocery store for produce all summer! haha.
I have some fox glove as well, cool flowers, great macro shots btw.
Nothin better than fresh garlic, had my first experience with that last year, hard to use the store bought stuff now.
I hope everythings going well for you buddy.
