Computer Questions

I have an Acer computer.

2.66 GHz, 248MB of RAM.
Celeron(R) CPU 2.66GHz
XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

I would like to upgrade the RAM. I have the cover open and I can see that it has one RAM card in it and there are two more slots next to it that are empty.

Is there a way to tell how much RAM the motherboard will accept. I dont really want another computer because I lke the software I have and the hardrive that I have.

The motherboard says ACER on it as well. Any ideas?

I think you mean 256Ram, not 248.

I'd add another 512 which should help you out (or at least double it). anything more than that probably won't help you too much considering your processor. You're motherboard could probably accept more but you won't notice the difference. Hope that helps.

I think to be safe and sure you will need the specific MB model. Not just for the max RAM but also what type.

248 is quite low these days but I can remember when 1 meg was impressive. It only cost $100 to upgrade to two megs!

I think you can fill all the slots with the same exact amount of RAM that is in the first one, but you can't mix and match.

Sounds like you need a new comp. That would still not be a lot of RAM.

Thank Yall. I wouldnt mind another computer but I dont want to have to pay for all that software. In fact, I wouldnt mind not paying for a new hardrive (hard drive?) seeings as I like what is on mine. I guess I need to look around and see iffin they sell em like that.

Thehotpepper.com -I hope that is not you in that avatar.

Buying a new computer doesn't mean getting rid of all your programs and files.

Buy a new one and put the old stuff on it. It will run much cleaner an old comp. is filled with garbage, log files, errors, and bulk that you don't need.

New ones are cheap these days. You should also buy an external hard drive for backing up, and it will make moving your files a snap.

Shows you how low-end I am... only 4GB here...
I do have a 7200RPM HD, GeForce 9600M GT w/ Dedicated 512MB and a T9400.

Had all types of computers and basically all available hardware since the days of non-x86 32BIT CPUs until now. was a Mac-user at one point. Now it's just me and meh lappy.

I've got 4 GB RAM and can go another 4GB if I want (with a few adjustments!!! Not that I need to, I bloody happy with 4 GB....

Mjdtexan You say you have one slot taken & 2 spare, Thats an odd configuration as most pc's have an even number of RAM slots. Either way try to get a 'matched pair' of 512 or above RAM. Put them in the slots closest to your CPU. A matched pair will be detceted as one lump and operate faster than a single or 2 x singles.

248 Ram means you'll be sharing a whole 8 MB to your video, want to try to up that too, maybe get a 512 vid card.

I am just gonna get another computer. The thing I hate is having to deal with all that new software and I am happy with my software. I like my XP. I suspect its just the comfort factor of being used to it.

Once you start using a new and fatser computer you will have no regrets. You can always keep using XP. That's what I still use for now.

I felt the same way, but my old laptop sh*t the bed, so I bought a new one for xmas. I was very concerned because it came with Windows 7 and I hadn't heard much about it. I know Vista sucked, and Win7 replaced it (I think).

Anyway, with Win7 it asks if you want to move software from your old PC. I thought I did, but after thinking about it, I decided I really didn't want to. The new laptop runs like greased lightning, right outta the box, and I didn't want to screw it up lol. I'm running a wireless network so I just pop over to the old machine and steal whatever files I need. Eventually, I'll shoot the old one.

I will say Office7 takes some getting use to. Tons of changes to all apps. Total new look and feel. It was a b*tch tryin to figure out how to simply EXIT lol. But, you get use to it the more you use it.

As for your Acer. If you're not gonna upgrade it, feel free to send it to me! I'll pay for the shipping. Definitely enough goodies there to save, in my opinion.:)

I replace my computers about every other year and I keep all my files on 2 redundant external drives. (I learned the hard way!) In all, I've got about 4TB.

Retta gets all my old computer hardware. She loves it!
