cone9 - 2015 "Sunshine came softly a-through my a-window today"

Here we go.  It's hard to believe it's come around to the time to start seeds again.

This year's grow list is below.  My lights and germinating area are set up and ready to go.  I'll update as I really get started.  I'll be using Rootcubes again this year.  I had great success with them last season.  Seed sources are listed if they are other than saved from my 2014 grow.

They are grouped (roughly) by heat level.

Heya Dave, long time no see!

Haven't forgotten the really outstanding stuff you sent me a while back; the Cream Fataliis are about two feet tall after topping and growing back out, and are some of the best-looking plants I have going. For anyone that hasn't tried them, Dave's right: outsftanding flavor with almost no heat.

Anyway, glad to see you're getting your grow on. When you get the chance, check out my seed list and let me know if I can send you anything. I should hopefully have fresh pods from some of the newer varieties I'm growing as well.

Cool, glad to see hooks and coty's so soon!
Thanks, Scott.  Seeds really pop with the heat and humidity.  I've been watching your glog - good stuff going on for you.  You work hard at your crafts.

Good to hear from you, Mike.

Thanks for the offer.  My seed coffers are pretty full for this season, but I'm sure I'll be searching out more new stuff the '16 - you know how this hobby gets you that way!

The Cream Fataliis are a favorite - I love eating them fresh, but wish there was a touch more heat.  I included some in mixed jars of pickled peppers where I found the taste less desirable than fresh.  So sad, I'll just have to eat more fresh!

Aphids in my grow room.  Damn things!

I went down a while ago to check the seedlings and saw  big fat green aphid on the edge of my germination chamber.  It got the squish treatment straight away.  I searched over the chamber and the seedlings in Solo cups and couldn't see any more.

However, the OWed Manzano a few feet away had a lot.  I hadn't seen them before but must have brought them in with the plant.  It has been moved back to the garage and I swept and wiped down all I could.  Damn things!

I found two lady bugs living on the Manzano.  I moved them over to the seedlings.  Maybe they'll ferret out the rest of the aphids.

Hopefully I can keep the Manzano alive in the garage, but it's not coming back inside.  I'd much rather lose it that infest the new kids.  I'll get something to treat it with when a moderate day allows. In the mean time I suppose the colder temps in the garage will really slow the aphids down.  Damn things!

Damn things!

Things look good, Dave.

Hope you have seen the last of the aphids.
I check plants in the greenhouse every day.
I hate them.

No aphids in the basement - Hooray!
The Manzano didn't make it in the garage.  Sorry to lose it but well worth the trade off!

Three casualties:   Rocotillo never germinated, two Cumari germinated but died soon after and one El Oro de Equidor died early as well.  I was really hoping to get to taste the El Oro.  I'll just get more seed and try next year.

I have updated the first page with final germination information.

The rest of my plants are doing well.  Some are really growing.   Some are still quite small but appear healthy nonetheless.

Here is the whole group:

This is a Reaper.  It is not listed on my grow list as I am not planning to grow them.  I have a friend who likes Ghost peppers.  He gave me a couple he grew last year so I decided to start a couple plants for him.  I thought he might like the Reapers as well.  I'm not into either myself.

Also in the pic is my lovely lady, Lady Bug.  There were two when I moved the Manzano out.  Then there was only one.  The my son found one upstairs that I relocated to the grow room.  Now I'm back to only seeing this one.  But I'm very happy to have her.

Corbaci Sweet.  I have a bunch of these plants - all small like this so far.  I think I'll need to find room for at least four plants.  They are a delicious sweet pepper and I'd like a bountiful supply for canning some sweet hots.

Tepin x Lemon Drop F3.  This is grown from seed I saved from the larger of the two TxLD I grew last season.  It will be interesting to see how these compare to the F2 fruit.

Thanks x2

I have quite  few Solo cups with multiple plants.  Last year I pulled a lot of the extras out and started new plants from the culls.  I was amazed as nearly all survived and I ended up with a lot of extra plants to give away.  I'm doing the same this year.  The pic below is of two of the new starts - Bolsa de Dulce and Queen Laurie.  I just fill a Solo 2/3 with moist MG, poke a hole down in it and insert the culled plant.  I pack some more MG around it and keep it well watered for a few days - almost like mud.  They wilt a bit for a couple days then perk right up like these.  This year I'm dusting a little rooting powder on the culls before planting(just because I have some handy).

I also started some Brandywine Tomato plants as well as some Peruvian Cilantro. (I figured since I have the lights going anyway I might as well grow some 'windowsill'cilantro to enjoy before the weather allows it outside.)

Here something funny I over wintered a ortemental sweet potato plant well I did not know the thing was filled with some kind of spider I think related to granddady long legs kept finding them and finally figured it out and put a stop to it.
I also found a mantis egg sac but think or hope they already hatched cause that thing in my car somewhere lol

Sorry to hear about the aphids, I hate them buggars. I had unexpected frost last fall and brought my plants into the basement without cleaning the rootballs or anything. They did great and looked even better inside than out but after a month or two the aphids started hatching out of the soil. I had a full blown aphidapocolypse before I even knew what hit me. I got so fed up with it the plants got shoved out into the freezing cold and the basement got bleached down.

Damn you guys and the praising of cream fatalii yet another seed to add to my wanted list.

Hi David hope your doing well thank you for the seeds you sent I got some cream fatalii seedlings going
I have Hawaii beach going but Angkor Sunrise did not germ the scarlet lantern did the best form jungle rain .
Anyway just wanted to drop in say hi & see how your doing

Dirt Day was Sat. the 16th.  These pics were taken early evening after the rain stopped (but the tide hasn't gone down yet)!

It was hot and sunny when I started.
A drizzle ensued as I got to the second bed.
The last five peppers were planted in a downpour.
I was as wet when done as if I had jumped in a swimming pool.

I planted another 8 or 9 the next day that will grow in pots.  There were 36 plants left over that I gave to six friends so all that basement growing time went a long way!
I was a bit embarassed with the plants I gave away this year.  Almost all my plants were sad looking this year - yellowed leaves, dropping a lot of lower leaves, etc.  May have been some fert burn and/or over-watering.  But, a few days outside and they look so much better.

Looks good.  Mine had a few periods of looking crappy also.  Very yellow early, then after first days of hardening looked like crap with burn and curled leaves, but now bouncing back strong for the most part, minus a few that might be getting sick.

Torenntial downpour as I type!

Plants are doing well.  Just a few pics to share.

Dave your plants are beautiful I have a queen Laurie started form seed you sent me its doing really well :drooling:
I am looking really forward to trying out pods when i get them

Thanks, Jason.  Queen Laurie is really a nice pepper.  Last year I only got a handful as the plant was slow to germinate and slow to thrive once set out.  It eventually grew to near 6 feet tall and was loaded with unripe pods when frost came.  This year should be better.  I have some pods set already

This is one from last year.  Aren't they pretty?

Sure is a pretty pod nice size too .
My plant isn't as near six feet but its bushy near one of judys peach bhut Jolokia selected strains so there may be some crossing but I plan on over wintering it.
My cream fatalii didn't make it along with some others but I have lots of plants & there always next year
I plan to have a more refined grow next year .
I have some Serrano going as well .
Hope all is well with you my peppers are doing better now that weather has stabilized some.

I've picked a few ripe pods here and there but still awaiting the better bounty to come.

The June and July monsoons certainly were not kind to my plants as you'll notice in the pics to follow.  So much rain and so little heat/sunshine.  Growth seems behind last year but most plants are setting plenty of pods.

Corbaci Sweet
I have several of these plants.  Delicious sweet peppers and look to be prolific.
