Dennish 2017 - It's Chilli in Yorkshire

Happy New Year!

Still deliberating over my ‘final’ list as per usual!  It will be 'more of the same' with some small tweaks here and there, and no radical changes in approach from me.  I feel I’m close to optimum in terms of squeezing the maximum potential out of my small greenhouse space (8’ x 6’).

Here's my current thinking on the line-up and GH layout, likely to change a bit;

The game is now afoot!  Early sowings in my trusty Garland Fab 4 on New year’s Day;

Also, my 6 year old Trindad Scorpion CARDI Yellow has finally begun to sprout after the usual hard root and branch cutback, great to see new leaves unfurling from his mighty old trunk... come on old boy, you can do it!  8)

I’m having a major extension on the house this year in spring, so hoping that my grow won't suffer too much.

Wishing all my friends at THP a bountiful 2017.

Cheers,

Dennis

Looks great, Dennis.  I'm doing an experiment with the
smaller pots, too.  Am growing 5 Aji Amarillo in #2 pots,
and three annuums in #3 pots with the idea that they
can be moved easily into the greenhouse to extend
the season in the Fall.  Thinking about converting some
of my big containers to veggies next garden season.

Chili plants look good, Dennis.

That garden looks well taken care of. Nice pics of the flowers.

Thanks Chuck, appreciate the comments my friend!

Ok, i use the 10 litre ones in my short season.

I'm sure 10l would be spot on too, I use mainly 6l, 11l and a small number of bigger pots as space allows.

Sounds sensible Paul.  If you have infinite resources - time, space, heat - you'd grow in the biggest pots possible, but the real world isn't like that, especially here in the UK.

Good growth on all fronts in the GH over the last week, plants really taking off now!

Really pleased with the two Aji Bodysnatcher F3 plants I selected, pods maturing into the distinctive shapes I am looking for.  Still lots of variation at F3, only 2 of the 6 plants I grew had the pod shape I am looking for.  And what is really pleasing, is the 2nd wave pods have the cool spikes I saw at the same stage on the F1 pods!

Yorkshire Barghest F1 pods, big mean looking deeply lobed, drop shaped pods with stingers... wonder what colour they will turn out and what heat level they will be?

6 year old TS CARDI ripening the first wave of pods now, this plant really is a storm trooper!

Some off pheno Bodysnatcher which seem to have regressed to Aji White Fantasy type pods... waste not, want not!

Greenhouse will be too full to walk into soon, Dennis!

Summer looks like it finally found its way to your door!
Have fun, buddy!
Thanks Paul, although a miserable wet and windy day today and the same for the week ahead.

Oh yes, beautiful plants. I can see you crawling to get to pods. I hope, I have the same problem.

Congrats on the Body Snatcher pheno.

Still can't get over the 6 season TS CARDI. A very good looking plant.

What size pot is she in?
Cheers Chuck!  The TS CARDI is only in a 6l pot this year, as I'm keeping it inside like a pampered old pet!

Nice stuff!

I was waiting to see what was up with the Aji Bodysnatcher. Looks like everything's going as planned. Good luck!

Thanks!  Yes, hopefully the heat and taste will be as expected too.  Hoping to grow the F4 generation this year too.

Some badass pods taking shape :onfire:

Thanks Scott, appreciate the kind words!

Great grow !
beautiful picture on the TS CARDI pods.
You won't know it yet , but your bodysnatcher was my inspiration to start my own first crossing experiment.

Great to see you having a go at crossing Karoo, be warned it's addictive! All the best of luck sounds like a great cross... thanks for the kind words.

Added support trellis for my Aji Bodysnatcher, branches were seriously sagging under the weight of pods on both plants... everything else zipping along in the GH. I've just added the first feed for most of the plants, about a month after plant out.

Despite the plants looking happy, I'm battling some kind of primordial slime / iron bacteria at the moment but so far the plants seem unaffected, think I've had a contaminated batch of B&Q compost   I've had to clean all the affected res's and wicks and am crossing my fingers I've somehow contained it at this point.  I think it is iron bacteria present in the soil which is causing rust like deposits, rusty mold like growth blooming on the wicks and res walls and slime clumps in the res water... the stuff of nightmares!  Any ideas on what this is and how to tackle it would be greatly appreciated?!

Meanwhile, in happier news this year's new cross has revealed its colour, one of the early small pods has ripened...

Yorkshire Barghest F1 (Trinidad Scorpion CARDI x Bhut Orange Copenhagen) is a really vivid orange, similar if not deeper orange than BOC! Can't wait to see the big boys ripen up and try one! The mature pods are like massive drop shaped Nagas with Scorpion stingers, hoping they are nice and hot.
