Dennish 2017 - It's Chilli in Yorkshire

Happy New Year!

Still deliberating over my ‘final’ list as per usual!  It will be 'more of the same' with some small tweaks here and there, and no radical changes in approach from me.  I feel I’m close to optimum in terms of squeezing the maximum potential out of my small greenhouse space (8’ x 6’).

Here's my current thinking on the line-up and GH layout, likely to change a bit;

The game is now afoot!  Early sowings in my trusty Garland Fab 4 on New year’s Day;

My Crosses
Aji Bodysnatcher F3
Yorkshire Barghest F1 (I only have 2 seed, fingers crossed!)

Competition
Scotch Bonnet MOA (http://thehotpepper.com/topic/62887-land-of-the-giants-2017-biggest-bonnet-competition/)
Aji Lemon Drop (http://thehotpepper.com/topic/63073-growdown-throwdown-2017-aji-lemon-drop/page-1)

Pubescens
Rio Huallaga Rocoto

Also, my 6 year old Trindad Scorpion CARDI Yellow has finally begun to sprout after the usual hard root and branch cutback, great to see new leaves unfurling from his mighty old trunk... come on old boy, you can do it!  8)

I’m having a major extension on the house this year in spring, so hoping that my grow won't suffer too much.

Wishing all my friends at THP a bountiful 2017.

Cheers,

Dennis

Oh, YUK
I hope you can figure that one out, Dennis.
Maybe their is something that you can treat
the res with that wouldn't affect the plants/roots.

On the other hand, that is a couple of fine specimens
you've got there.  the cross should be very good.

And hot   :fireball:

Thanks Paul, I've never seen anything like it... think I am going to add some non toxic water butt cleaner (safe to plants apparently) to the res's to try and prevent the slime coming back and the bacteria spreading, it's too late in the day to start re-potting everything in new compost without too much disturbance to the plants so I'm just going to have to find a way to manage it.

I guess if it's not hurting the plants, it's more
of a nuisance to the operation of your pumps, etc.

Good luck with that.

Long overdue update... things moving through the gears on this years grow quite nicely and the greenhouse is really filling up.

I've evicted Rio Huallaga Rocoto and Beaver Damn to create some much needed space, they don't seem to mind the spot up against the warmth of a south facing wall.

My crosses have been a huge success so far. Aji Bodysnatcher F3 plants are prolific and producing the large bulbous pods I'm after, the mature plants now pumping out pods with the spikey texture too. The Lemon Drop taste profile is retained along with the juiciness and thicker walls... and I swear this year's pods are even hotter than the previous generation. I've been a bit busy, so only just sown the F4 seed. I'm hoping to achieve ripe pods and be ready to go with the F5 generation in the New Year.

Yorkshire Barghest F1 has been my best plant and favourite pods of the season to date, I'd put them in the superhot bracket and I think those that have tried them would agree. Along with the heat, the flavour is great, really fruity and they work well in a chilli or curry. I'll be seeking help with the growout of F2 next season, so if you want a pod and seeds let me know.

My growdown Lemon Drop chucking out load of pods, I’m at 603g so far for the season.

Gutted that my SB MOA isn’t true, it’s some kind of blocky superhot which I can’t bring myself to like.

Elsewhere in the GH, most things are podding up now. Starting to get toms and cucumbers regularly too.

Fantastic update, Dennis.

I like the Bodysnatcher. Congrats! Sounds like a winner! Extra heat, can't go wrong with that.

Your Rocoto looks stunning. Hope you get some pods from her.

Yorkshire Barghest has a nice shape and color. How's the flavor? I would be interested in growing that out for you.

Sorry to hear about the MOA. Just curious, is it still flowering? I grew some that looked like that. They had good flavor, but not the desired shape. That was the first round of pods. I had some later pods that showed more true pheno.

Take care, Dennis and enjoy your weekend.

Cheers Chuck!

I've had about half a dozen Rocoto pods so far, caught me by surprise with the heat!

Yorkshire Barghest has a really nice flavour along with the heat, not bitter at all yet strong fruitiness. I'll send you some seed later in the season, not sure how practical it would be to send pods.

Those pods look delicious.

Yorkshire Barghest sounds good. I'm trying to get my grow down to a number of varieties next year. 70+ varieties is way to many. Hope to find some good ones out of them.

Pods wouldn't make it here. Seeds would be great. I'll pay the postage. If, I ever get a harvest, I have seeds to send to Sim. Let me know if anything interests you.

Quick and long overdue update... things going well in patches, but can't help but feel my grow has been hampered by my slimey problem which I have fought to control but feel I'm slowly losing the war.

Some highlights, Yorkshire Barghest has been epic... beautiful big, blood orange pods which are devilishly hot and super flavoursome to boot.

It seems I've missed quite a bit here lately, my apologies; and I have to say a most excellent grow you have going on Dennis!

I don't know what the rust thing is, but it's certainly not slowing down your grow. ;)

I think I could write a short story on all the goodness here; but instead I'll just say, a killer grow my friend!

Keep up the good work :P

Time for an update!  As I noticed the first signs of mould so have evicted my 4 tomato plants which were pretty much spent anyway to make more space and allow better airflow in this damp, cold start to September we are having.

Lots of poddage and ripening, here is a shot of the GH with White 7 Pot removed from it's central berth... as you can see loads of colour, soon be big harvest time.

White 7 pods turning, absolutely loaded... however more ivory / pale yellow than white as you often find with 'whites'.

I've just taken delivery of 100 jars and my apple tree is creaking, so apple and chilli chutney time beckons!

As is the Growdown Aji Lemon Drop!  Come on baby!  I'm currently on 768g for the season from the one plant, but a little dissapointed as the plant seemed to stall just as it was getting into full flow.  Think I overcooked the nutes to be honest, back to good 'ol NutriGrow and it's off and running again.  Hope to make 1KG +.

Finally, my LOTG SB MoA... a victim of mislabelling, it ended up in a 6l chilligrow as opposed to the 15l AirPot I had destined for it.  It is podding up a treat, I can only dream of what might have been!

Oh and here we have Aji Bodysnatcher F4 seedlings, hot to trot for pods by year end hopefully!

Your chile grow is looking stellar Dennis! Good idea to remove the 'maters at this point. Apple chile chutney works for me... Take lots of pics!
