DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)


Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

It blows away the top layer of "sand", and replaces it with more "sand"....
Thank goodness the wind has subsided, and it is nice and calm now :)
Just got done watering everybody, and no apparent losses from the wind :)
Another stupid Reaper seedling youngster damped off though...those guys are just not vigorous at all!
Those and the "Naga Vipers" are among the least hardy of all the varieties I have sown....

Now, I have to say, "Ed's Red Bhuts" are germinating machines! I last counted 64/108 from round 1 and they are still popping up in the transplant cups!
And I sowed 108 more a couple days ago...lol...might just hit that 1,000 mark after all :)

2nd round of excitement for the day......Tonight I heard something banging against the kitchen window....
To my horror it was a Sphinx Moth....aaaarrrgggg

So I went out there and killed the hummingbird sized pest!!
That will prevent a gazillion hornworms from being born...

Seemed quite early for that bugger to be lurking around though.
I killed many of them last year, and handpicked thousands of their evil children off the tomato patch, using a powerful portable uv light at night.
The uv light makes them glow in the dark like the monsters they truly are.

Stupid Sphinx Moths :(
 
I've killed three Sphinx Moths in the last couple of weeks. So far, no hornworms on my pepper plants...but it is just a matter of time.
 
So is a Sphinx moth and a Hummingbird moth the same thing? I always thought the Hummingbird moths were so cool looking, but when I just did a Google search for Sphinx moth the pictures it pulled up included the Hummingbird moth as well. I haven't seen any hornworms here yet, but I'm sure they'll find my garden eventually, all of the other nasty pests have!

Put more germed stuff into cups :)

Total (including Sweet peppers, as Shane informed me that they count too...lol) Is approximately 750 plants/seedlings/hooks

The UV light was awesome! just needs to be very dark outside....I couldn't have dealt with so dang many hornworms so easily without it!!

0/178 on the Canadian import "Red Bhuts" so far (I expect that to remain that way though, even if I am giving them every chance to germinate)

Dude!

I hated hauling them in and out during the hardening off period, and I only had 11 boxes. Mine, the Chinense are coming in tonight, it's gonna blow 20mph+ for 12 hours and drop to 35 for two nights as per the latest forcast. The ones in the garden just need to hang in there....Usually, because we're on a hill we can see up to 10 degrees warmer temps here. I'm hoping that's the case this time..

Are you getting this weather? It's coming from the west.

It's funny (not really) but we do get colder, and hotter, here than in town....more exposed to the elements.
I have had them outside all day and night for a couple weeks now...
It got down to 39 degrees last night. I left them out there, but woke up every couple hours and checked the temp...lol
I am really hoping for no more frost days!!

If it does approach freezing, I'll do the haul in, because I really don't want to lose them and it's too late to start over!

And yes, we had insane 50-60 mph winds for around 2 days.. It probably did arrive at your house.

Well it's on the way! in a few hours:(
 
My gal just got home from the annual home and garden show at the fairground, and brought me these.
A "Floral Gem", and a Serrano.... Add 2 morw plants to the total...lol...and 1 more new variety to the grow list, and another unkown strain of Serrano :)

Oh, and seeds from AjiJoe came in the mail today, so add Peach Bhut, and Wild Brazil to the grow list.
I'll be gettimg those into the germ trays tomorrow :) along with some "surprise hot mix" seeds he sent with them!

However, I am not opposed to plants from nurseries etc....if they are something we don't have, or just catch my eye for whatever reason...lol!!
