DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

This I will believe when I see ;)

Glad the seeds are popping up for you! That's a ton of cups and plants in those pics!

Hahahaha, they have to be the last round, i'm running out of room on the porch!
Plus no room in the germ trays!
and running out of time too, they need to be big enough to survive at plant out time ;)

Plus there are the gazillion other food crop seeds I am going to have to sow directly in the ground.

And garden spot preparations to accomplish :)

That made me tired just thinking and typing it...lol

And then there is the plant/seedling count already at 752 +/-
with at least 500-600 pepper seeds still in the germ trays......

Woke up to a couple surprises :)

WooHoo!! The first Red Bhut from pepperlover.com is hooking :) after 5 days :)

And, I can't believe it, after 10 days, I seriously can't believe this....

ONE of those shabby looking seeds from India via Canada is apparently hooking.
So out of 200+ seeds, I sowed 178 that didn't look "burned", and one has actually popped.
1/178......I am completely shocked....

At this point, that one seed that popped would be a $13 seedling (cost of seeds+jiffy pellets), but if more defy the odds and germinate, that cost figure will drop......

Well.....I can hardly believe it....now there are 3 of those India via Canada seeds hooking ???
They looked so terrible, I really am shocked even 1 popped, and now there are 3 ???

I guess it's true, "Don't judge a book by its cover (or a seed...lol)"

Damn.
That looks too much like a full time job.

And I though I was a bit strange for having a load of lights, a couple of hydro's, bottles of ferts, pesticide,ph adjusters,meters,timers---did I forget anything-----probably.

All for 50 seedlings and 5 overwinters I won't even be able to get into the dirt till June.

Well..... I do work at home :)
So, it is easy to water etc. when needed :)

EXACTLY!! ;) and I have my eyes on a few desired varieties for 2014 already :)

I'm getting there myself. I just started my last seeds, but think I will cut myself off until 2014. Unless I feel I need to start some over the summer, which I may actually do.. I have an F2 I'd like to get started with the F3...

Hahaha, please don't give me any ideas!! Just kidding.
But I will likely start a few things in the fall, when it is still warm, then put em under lights during the winter, and maybe get some winter pods.
Definately want to do some fall cloning for the winter too.

And now there are 7 "Canadian Express" "Red Bhut" hooks popping.....
I guess I have to eat my words at some point.
Well, as long as they grow Red Bhuts that is....

It will be interesting to see how those perform. Assuming they really are red bhuts, they should be (may be) genetically closer to the original landrace than some of the varieties making the rounds.

I had that same thought.
If they are indeed imported from there, and are indeed Red Bhuts, they should be as true as could ever be.
And I will have a ton of plants from Ed's seeds he sent, and also plants grown from pepperlover too.

This could be quite interesting to see the results and compare them all......in several months...LOL

Hope they grow true brotha...I was at the local nursery down here in Poway and they had Bhuts (red and yellow) and Fataliis out. Last year I picked up a Barrackpore from them. They only had a few though. You should let them know you're about to have about 150 extras you'll sell them! HAHAHA

How much were they selling for?

Hahaha...... nope....they are mine...all mine...... :)
I'm not even sure people around here would buy.anything fun and interesting.
This place is like the wallyworld brainwashed mecca......
When I asked the one "real nursery" about buying bhut seeds or plants last year, they looked at me like I was from outer space. Or was it that they thought I was talking from out of my bhut?
Either way, I left disappointed....

I am just going to have to set up a roadside pepper/tomato stand in the driveway during harvest time...lol

Also, if this goes well this year, for next year I have the perfect name for the next grow/glog.....
"2014 in 2014"

OK, the Bhut update....

The "Canadian Express" Red Bhuts are at 12/178 now....So I guess it wasn't a fluke.... (2 weeks)

The second round of Ed's Reds are poppin now, 6 hooks this morning. (at 6 days)

Pepperlover/Judy's bhuts are hooking too (after 6 days)
7 Red
3 White
2 Purple
None of the other varieties yet, but it is early on still.

Also, White Habaneros are starting to hook too :)

Chris, I know I’m late to the party but I had actually read a few pages, thought I had commented and realized today that I had not … better late than never I say ;) It had been a while since I read the first few pages, so I decided to start at the beginning again, wow sounds like both you and Gotrox are challenged by your environments but seems to me if these guys can do it in Chicago, Canada, North Pole and 5k above sea level in JA you’ll do it too ^_^

So I’ll post a few notes from my read:
  • Hmm “CARPETBOMBING” sounds like Carl’s “Borg Sowing” to me ;)
  • Great start mon!
  • Nice shadow picture of you next to your recycled table, nice table to boot!
  • If your goats are anything like the one’s I’ve encountered in the Bahamas or Jamaica, I fear for dem peppers in the goat pen ;)
  • Nice joke on last garden’s season picture, you got me scratching my head there a minute, hehehe
  • Wow between the 93 seedlings, hooks and everything else you got going it’s going to be a rewarding year!
  • I wasn’t surprised to read one of dem bugs on your Datil stems, mine have been nothing but bug magnets :/ I’ve gifted 5 already and have only 2 Datil’s left, even considering gifting these as I’ve already offered them up to a friend.
  • Ha what a surprise from the Aji Joe Surprise via Stupidjerk, first one I’ve ever seen like that.
  • Helmetheads, yea me too but I was luck only 4 and IIRC they were saved ^_^ well at least 3 of 4, can’t recall. 2 I removed and 2 I reburied and one came up clean, can’t recall if I saved the last one or not … but that’s life I guess … but I’ve never had one of those that grew the cots grew thru the helmet. I thought helmets are produced by not deep enough planting, oh and never had them on matoes yet.
  • Whoa an additional 108 bhuts with a total of 208 additional peppers sowed …
  • Love dem sunset pics!
  • Will be very cool to see new pics as last years with an oasis of peppers & veggies in that dry looking desert, great job!
  • Man you certainly run a lot of trays in and out daily, have you thought of building a cart with wheels you can pull out and in?
  • Certainly cool neighbors you have dam all dem extra seeds ordered, sounds great!
  • All out of “Like This” I’ll have to hit your glog early tomorrow or later when THP gives me more so don’t be surprised. I also have to finish up from page 9, been at it too long now and I’ll finish up later but great stuff and enjoying da read!
