DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Amazing thanks to your seeds you contributed!! {and other kind folks)
It remains to be seen how well everything does when it hits the soil...sand...dirt...clay...lol

New totals....
Tomatoes - 390
Peppers - 1011 !!!! (and still popping up :) )

I am super happy 4 Red Savinas popped, and 1 Jamaican Red (I hope more of both pop though!!)

Still waiting on any of the Brown/Chocolate Bhuts from pepperlover to pop....I sure hope they pop soon, I sowed around 41 seeds!

StupidJerk.....Amazingly the chocolate bhuts you sent me popped in 5 days!!!!!!!

Dude! I'd like to be the fly on the wall at plant time.

Plant time will be crazy.

Especially since all the other food crop stuff needs to be direct sowed in the ground.
It will get insanely busy out there for sure.

And I still need to prep expansion locations #2 & #3....Started prepping expansion #4 (Red Bhut Land)
Oh, and put in the irrigation systems.....

Yes busy time to come, in fact I need to get out there and work..kinda have the lazies today, Gradkids wore us out LOL.

Hey post pics of the work in progress. Do you have to water before tilling?

Scott

Yep, some of the ground is very compacted, might rent a rototiller, but maybe not.
Watering definately softens it.
I have been watering spot #4 for several days, but still need to level it, and figure out the irrigation.

Kids will do that to you!!

We are doing our easter celebration at noon.....would rather be gardening, but the family loves celebrations...lol

Oh look at the pretty Japones pods I got from the store today ( a bag of them)...also got some more dried Pequins and Arbols...

IMAG1617_zps45fba7a5.jpg

Must not sow more seeds

Must not sow more seeds

Must not sow more seeds

Must not sow more seeds........

Oh, who am I kidding....I sowed more seeds...lol
It was only a big ole pile of Japones seeds in each of 8 pellets :)

Borg style sowing :) They will assimilate you :)

I can't wait to see a picture of everything potted up and then everything once it is in the ground :) Last year I was overwhelmed during the seed starting/potting up season (14 month old and a pregnant wife) and barely managed to take care of 30 peppers and 250 tomatoes. Everything was neglected and needed some TLC. I can't imagine how much time it is going to take to get everything in the ground!

Mine were from Refining Fire Chiles, as were the Douglahs. Those were the only two I ordered from that site, but the germ rates were great.
They both definately germed nicely!! Good to know the source!
Weird that the choc bhuts from pepperlover are taking soooo long. All the others from her are popping away.

Oh, it is going to be insane at planting time!!
But I will have some help, and definately use my favorite technique.
Throw em in the ground and water them. Then see who survives.
I started enough plants that any casualties won't be noticed, and might actually help me timewisr in the long run...lol
