DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

The windmill has a huge permit fee...in the thousands of $$ :(

Build a scoop to funnel the wind to a ground-level enclosure containing a turbine and call it a kinetic energy extraction device. Not a windmill, doesn't need a windmill permit. From your description of the wind up there, it sounds like even the scoop could be ground-level.

As I grow more libertarian leaning this stuff just drives me nuts. Regulations getting in the way of your trying to be a good steward and less of a strain on the environment. I imagine a windmill itself would be cost prohibitive though. Those things have to cost a bit....

It's all about control.

I looked at them once (commercially available windmill) Dang those things were expensive. They must have made some of the internal parts out of gold or platinum....lol
I think with permits it was in the $25,000 range.
Our electric bill ranges from $30-100 a month, so I don't think it would be cost effective even in the long term :(

It's all about control.

Someone in.the middle of town has a wind powered generating device of strange design in their backyard. It looks like an upright rotating cylinder shape, with 3 panels solid, and 3 panels as a gap. maybe 20' tall No Blades on it, so it isn't a windmill.

I could build a windmill way cheaper than buying one.
Shoot, I could design one with a bunch of research involved.

Hahahaha, I like the ground level reverse turbine idea! It gets pretty crazy windy on the ground level too!!

And yes, it is all about control....of resources....and $$ harvesting by the county.

When I was going to college, I met a fellow who had set his place up nicely.
Homemade windmill, Small hydro setup on the stream running through his place, and some solar panels.
The electric company had to write him a check every month!! LOL

If you can find a way to generate the electricity they do have to buy it back, at least here in Tejas.

But the cost to setup is crazy, I have the wind but the windmill is mega $$$ and the return just takes too long.

OK here's a challenge, how can we do this on the cheap?

Shouldn't be too difficult, a set of blades, a generator, a power converter......

It has been howling wind for a couple days straight here....couple days more forecasted :(
The Wind Advisory said 60+ mph gusts.....but it has been 60+ mph constantly :(

I can do a lot of things but design an AC electrical system...I would need plans to go from..

Fork those 60+ winds!

Gonna be a rough year if that continues...

Speaking of surprises, do we know what's in the AjiJoe Surprise Hot Mix? I'm getting some pretty good germination from those, too, even though they are a year old and were exposed to 100+ temperatures last summer.

Edit: typo

I don't know what mine are, but they look different from one another. They are still small and I am seeing more and more differences as they grow. I should number them so I can go back and see how the development has progressed over time. I got good germ rates also.

1200 plants! My family already thinks I am nuts with 100+. They don't know that number can go much higher. Ha ha. It's addicting seeing how many can pop up over night.

Michelle

Oh....My family thinks I am crazy...lol
The other day the daughter said "wow, you eat peppers on everything"

Yep, it wasn't hard to go from 100 to 1200....hahahaha
We'll see how many survive into adult plants :)

Yep, I am sick of this wind :(
Luckily it isn't like this ALL the time....lol
But it is pretty hard on the eyes.
Plus the animals out back still want to be fed, even if it is too windy out there :)

Right now, I am babysitting the neighbors' kids, while my gal and them are in town running errands.
Later when I get home, I think I'll google homemade windmills :)
Do you think the county would allow a giant Dutch style one? Bwahahahahahahaha
Combination electricity generator and pepper powder mill....lol

Yeah, the web is chock full of sites dedicated to home-built wind power.

Outside of city limits around here, we're pretty much like Scott (Devv) down there in Texas, mineral rights, water rights, few restrictions. Some folks sold their mineral rights during the recent hullabaloo over the Fayetteville shale play. Foolish thing to do, in my opinion, since they could have leased the rights and had long-term continuing income. Or kept their rights altogether and drilled their own gas well. There are a number of private gas wells around here. Wish I had one; then I could heat a greenhouse and grow peppers year round.

Just transplanted more from the germ trays into cups. Wjile watching NASCAR on the back porch :)

New total 1151 peppers...... plants/seedlings/hooks

And after 18 days, still zero germination on pepperlover chocolate bhuts :(

A few current photos :)

Best looking plant. A Butch T

Hopefully it likes the potting soil it is now living in....

Looking great, Chris! Love the Springer Spaniel!

Thanks Doc :)
I have 8 Springer Buddies. We used to love going bird hunting, until my gal banned us from killing birds.
Now we just hunt tennis balls....lol

Here are 6 of the 8 :) When I get home from babysitting the neighbor kids, i'll post photos of Squishy and Kissyface (no good photos of those 2 in my phone :( )

Hell of a dog pack you have! I bet they have a great time together. It's a shame about the permit fees for wind turbines in your county. I always see cali as being on the forefront of green energy too. The state should step in and fix this BS. I think you can offset the costs somewhat with tax incentives too but not until they lift that crazy permit fee. Good luck bro. Wish you many pods this year!

Thank You :)

Yep, that is why when the twins graduate in 2 more years, we want to head on out of here, and find somewhere with more green plants and water :) We have been eyeing the South, perhaps Georgia, Florida etc....

Oh, and of course most other places have a much lower cost of living than California too...added bonus to relocating :)

Thanks Scott :)

Yep, I am definately hoping for no freezing weather!!!!

We might be safe, but I am definately afraid to put any of them into the ground yet...lol

It's crazy how much difference a few miles and a few feet of elevation can make. We're in the same county and I've been out of frost danger for a month.

I'm thinking that with your pepper addiction that a move to Florida makes the most sense. You'll probably be able to get a big chunk of land if you buy a place for the same price as what you're selling.

It is nutty....down where you are it is much nicer weather!!

We had to walk away from our house a couple years ago, after the economy crashed, and both of our incomes plummeted.
This house is our friend's, and he asked if we wanted to rent it.

Hopefully when we do move, we will have recovered enough to buy again.

And now for the horror story of the day......

I was babysitting the kids next door.
My gal calls and says you better get over here.
So she comes over to take care of the kids while I go home.

It looked like a freaking bomb went off on the pottimg table :(
One of my dogs....the youngest one (2 year old) had jumped on the table full of pepper seedlings, and pepper stomped his way from one side to the other :(

The casualties weren't actually too bad. Maybe a dozen were slain outright.
The next couple days will be crucial, but I don't see there being any more than 50 fatalities in the next few days.
Most were knocked over/stepped on, but the seedlimgs were pretty intact.

I had some pretty awesome tomato seedlings on that table, and he cruised right through them.
There will be some fatalities there, since some of the toms looked snapped in half.
I will know more in the morning, and can see them in the daylight.....

Darn dog......
