DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

What's going on Chris, just wanted to say thank you for some seeds and plants. Been busy but these winds and sun are horrible.
My pleasure on the plants etc. Just paying it forward a little ;)
Yeah, our weather has been pretty odd this year han't it?
We are trying to finish up those 2 unplanted garden areas while the temps are a little cooler.
It was cool to meet up with you the other day too.
How's your garden space coming along? Are you planted out yet, or still finishing the prep work?

Looking forward to seeing the updated pics when you have time, good to hear read that things going good ... I really want to see Red Bhut ally \o/ Have a great day Chris ....

Got some prep work, been very busy, had a high amount of wind and knocked over some plants and dogs didn't help, getting them to recover and ordering pepper seeds from another vendor and gonna see if it was just a bad batch of seeds and get them going before it's too late. Planted some of your seeds and got my job out in mojave, so I had to drug test, do a background, work both my jobs, it's been hectic, working on fencing that area off and throwing some wood chips down. I said what the hell and put a few watermelons in the garden and some tomatoes, going to keep the peppers that grow in some nice size pots and put 2-4 in the garden bed.

I really admire ya Chris! I'm with Pia: hard for me to complain about rain, heat, cold, heat with what you face and yet still grow! Thanks for the inspiration and glad those fires missed ya, hon! Whew. Wonderful of you to share your plants as well . Thank you!!!!

Just wondering how my fellow high desert grower is doing???  Hope everything is going well for you!  Are the peppers all settled in now?  Most of mine look like they are finally adjusting to their environment, but I have noticed that the chinense seemed to take longer to recover after plant out.

Looking forward to a photo update soon!

OK, here is the excitement of the month.
Finished garden #4 {For sprawling plants like melons, squashes, pumpkins etc...)
Kids and my gal all helped plant the seedlings... it took a few hours...... Looked great after a couple days :)
Then...... the 3 goats.... busted into the back area ..... then proceeded to go over, and under, my rabbit fencing, and ate almost everything in sight in that garden #4!!!
Needless to say I was a bit dismayed, but the next day, I busted out the seed collection, and spent a few hours borg sowing replacements of all the stuff pillaged by goats. So in the end there will be a lot more food produced than I had originally planned on :)
Maybe the goats did me a favor? Hmmmmm..... yeah.... I will go with that, rather than be mad :)
In about a month, it should be a nice field of green plants out there.

Red Bhut Alley is looking pretty good....the seeds/plants from Meinchoh all look great.
About 93 of them....the other strains were slain by the odd desert weather right after transplanting.
So I "may" have sown the rest of the seeds he gave me (yesterday) for replacements...lol... (144 more seeds)
Shhhhh...don't tell anyone...hahaha

We were glad they missed us too!
The wacky weather has put my plants into slow grow mode...except the maters...those are all growing like crazy!!
My grow will be like the tortoise and the hare....the peppers are the tortoise and will get to the finish line in the Fall...lol

The Annuums and the Red Bhuts are settling in nicely, but I have to finish the other Chinense's garden prep to plant those ones in the vround.
The good news is 3 of the 4 gardens are planted and progressing :)

Yep, super busy trying to get everything done before it is too late, but things are pretty good here right now.
Thank you! And I hope all is well out your way :)

Chris good to hear from you, it’s been a while since last I seen you actively around the forums, I know your wisdom and humor has been missed.

Sad to read about the goats but good on you replanting, I’m not surprised it will turn out better, bigger in da end. Seems to me that if it’s not one thing we’re fighting off it’s another, everything wants to eat our plants … do you blame them, lolz.

Can’t wait to see your updated pics of Red Bhut Alley, whoa 93 and thinking of sowing another 144 … I say go for it \o/ My Bhut Jolokia now has pods, not many but enough for me, IIRC I posted some pics of her a few weeks back and now I’m waiting for dem to red up so I can update the pics.

Great to hear from you and hope you have a killa weekend brethren!

PS now get out there and start shooting some pics, hahahahaa ....

Thanks Ramon!!
I have been lazy taking and uploading photos.......
I'm actually finally starting to see a few  pods forming....Anaheim, Poblano, Purple Flash, Cayenne, Jalapeno, Serrano and Datil.
Weather has been nutty lately, High of 78 today, 88 tomorrow, 99 the next day, and 109 on the weekend.....up down, up down....
But the cooler spells will help pods set :)

The latest episode is when we went to remove the turnip patch, and found billions of aphids.... Yikes...But also there are tons and tons of ladybugs and their larvae :) So I am going to let the myriad ladybug larvae eat their fill, and release another tub of 1200 ladybugs tomorrow. Then when the evil aphids are decimated, I will clear out that turnip patch and plant some Kale and Chard in that spot.

Also I have been sowing more herb seeds (cilantro, basil and oregano) from seeds harvested off plants in pots on the porch.
And I just planted 4 varieties of basil plants, and another oregano plant, that the neighbor got from home depot. Those should be fun to taste.

The tomatoes are setting bunches of fruit, and should be getting out of control anytime now....LOL

Sorry to hear about the goats.

Around here they (ranchers) say no fence can keep a goat in.
I figure they didn't think what I planted was good enough, and wanted me to plant other varieties....LOL
So I borg sowed the heck out of that back garden with tons of seeds this time.
It should start to get out of control in a month or two ;)

Nice to read you are getting pods, wish we could see dem *hint, hint* Good on the herbs, my cilantro is now seeding and I hope to replant some myself as we use a lot. I don't have the others as you, because of space and time but I get fresh from farmers market, certainly not as good as growing your own, keep up the great grow!

Jalapeno

Poblano

Purple Flash

Cayenne

Weird looking Cayenne

Only ripe pod out there... a Serrano

Ladybug Larvae in turnip patch... they're everywhere!!

Tomatoes are growing fast now....will be waist high anytime now :)

Going to need a bump now ;)

HAHAHA, I ran out their and just took those photos!!

But here are some I was holding out on.....

Turnips in cream sauce.... used cayenne flakes from last season to make it tasty :)

A few Maters starting to get ripe now

The Family planting the sprawling plant garden :)

Asian Chicken....used some Japones Pepper Flakes in this one

Wild Galapagos Tomatoes

Twice baked potatoes..... Cayenne pepper flake enhanced

Homemade Pizza with frozen Jalapeno pods

Turkey Burger Sliders with Guacamole....and Jalapenos :)

Caught this guy (Gopher Snake) in the chicken coop....he was trying to swallow a chicken egg, but the egg was waaaaay too big...lol
I relocated him into the main garden....I have seen that particular snake several times lately, all over the property

Pods and all the foodies look great, nice snake capture. Those wild Galapagos matoes look just like my Everglade wilds, awesome mon!

How big do the ladybug larvae get, the seven I just witnessed hatching were microscopic and my pic didn’t do them justice.

They get pretty big! there are a ton of them that are maybe 1/2" +/-  long  out in the aphid turnip patch (now I want to catch and measure one...lol)
And they cruise around pretty fast too :)

The one's I pictured were microscopic and they were slow to travel away from the egg sacks the first day of birth. But by the next day I lost track of them and they're somewhere on MoA #2 AFAIK.
