DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Dam that looks like some of the winds we get from off shore passing hurricanes ... Hope all your grow stayed safe!
Crazy sand in the air.... I'm trying to figure out how to embed the darn video...lol
I'm surprised you could see it!

It actually got stronger after the video.....
Garden seems good, the shadecloth windbreak works pretty good.

Here is out in the garden #1

It wasn’t imbedded but I was able to see it over at youtube no problem …

Ahhh... that makes sense...
speaking of making sense.... well, i figured it out...simply copy the url and paste it in the post...lol
Easiest possible way....I tried all the hard ways to no avail... :)

Garden #4 for the sprawling plants....Barely can hear me over the insane wind...lol

Red Bhut Garden (#3)

I sure hope the weather mellows out a bit, so stuff can get out of the slow growing funk, and take off!!

Fine.... It won't let me embed 4 videos in one post.... When I get a bump, I'll try to embed the last 2

I took a video yesterday with some wind going, but I think yours has mine beat!  I'm happy to lose that contest though.  The forecast had called for a 60% chance of thunderstorms today, which translates into 100% chance of gusty winds, a strong possibility of lightning strikes, and maybe 20% chance of some actual raindrops hitting the ground.  So far I haven't lost any plants, just a few leaves here and there.  I like your windbreak.  With my veggie bed being in the front yard and living in a subdivision with an HOA, I'm kind of limited on what I can rig up without being in violation of the rules.

Garden #2 The Infamous Goat Pen (I said 35 gully's on video...I meant 33)

Chinense seedlings on the porch

Oh man, I don't want anything to do with lightning strikes!!!!

It is a bit windier than usual right now.... Weather is switching from cold to hot, so that means a lot of freakish wind.....

Oh those darn HOA's....We can do most anything in the back, but the front needs to look clean, or the county gets mad...lol

Well, that's it on the video experiment, and I hope you enjoyed all my 1200 weather beaten seedlings...LOL

Nice vids brother...your strategy of borg planting will help with the wind, but it'll still cause you some trouble. Couple that with the dry heat up there and you'll need to water almost all day. Triple digits up there this weekend to boot! I envy your space, but not your conditions! Good luck!

Ouch that is some serious wind Chris. Hope all of your plants made it through everything ok. We had some winds here but nothing like that.
Yep, It was a bad one, finally starting to get less windy! I was sandblasted pretty badly yesterday.

Thanks! That was my first attempt at video of the garden stuff :)

This is why I have "Extreme" in the glog title...lol... Gardening here is pretty tough...I would trade for your weather in a heartbeat!!

It looks like 96-100 degrees saturday and sunday, then back to about 88-92 or so.... The temps have been all over the place... up down up down....

The Borg planting definately helps a bit....

The Annuums etc in Garden #1 all seem just fine after the wind...(Other than the previous rabbit damage, and many of those are making a come back.)
They were also planted out a while ago, so they are more hardened to the cruel cruel desert than the Bhuts are at this point.

The Bhut garden seems to have suffered a bit.
The 93 plants from the seeds from Meinchoh are doing great.... They are all closer to the wall of the barn, so were a bit more sheltered...
The 101 Canadian Express seedlings have some casualties... withered etc...
Also the 26 Pepperlover seedlings have some casualties too...
I think the wind storm  was a bit more damaging than usual.....Some of the hurting seedlings may recover, but who knows....
I figure at least 2/3 of the 220 will be fine, but only time will tell.... After all this crazy wind, there still should be a ton of plants regardless.....

I think when it comes time to plant out the many varieties of Chinense plants, I will do a few "test" plants first, for several days....
That way I can see how they react with less risk to my overall grow....

Most of the rest of the spring, and summer, will be all vegetative growth during the heat, then in the fall.... BOOM...pods will set and it will hopefully be mayhem trying to harvest them...

And yes.... there will be plenty of times I have to water every day (maybe twice in a day on the very hottest days)... right now, I am watering every 2 or 3 days.

Man, sure does remind me of when I lived in Abilene, TX. Had a friend leave his car parked in the middle of the student parking lot during Spring Break one year and when we got back there wasn't a single bit of paint left on it but for one side and the windows were all frosted except for the one side. That west Texas wind don't play around.

OK, that stupid powerhouse fire is way too close....smoke is filling the valley here.
Not too worried about it getting here, but south of us, who knows....
It went from 3600 to 19500 acres yesterday. And they doubled the # of firefighters....

And yes, it is windy still....

It's going to be very bad for fires this year, I think worse then last year, If we have lighting stores come threw in July or August  the North will burn up how dry it is already!   Keep safe!!!

I figure we are pretty safe here, but it is way too smokey.. probably hide inside most of the day.
I sure hope the North doesn't burn. I love it up there.

So, now it is Hot, Windy, and the fire is 10 miles West of us..... Ash bits in the yard, but not too much.... Edge of the smoke layer is right above us.
We went in town to the relatives and went swimming and BBQ'd food and had fun instead of sitting around breathing the fire's smoke...lol

Yesterday.
