DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

That's an incredible amount of plants !
You might need a machete to work your way around those when they bush out........ :D
Seriously, you'll be pulling off some major harvest of all types of peppers.
Nice video update.

Thanks!!
I think you will be right about the machete....lol....it is going to get dense in those gardens pretty quickly.

I am hoping for some crazy harvests later in the year :)
Then I can make a ton of different powders and flakes.

Is it an Annuum? Is it a Chinense? Hmmmmm I think it is a "MoWTF Scotch Bonnet"!!! (Ministry of WTF).... Bwahahahahhahaha
Anyway, StupidJerk sent me the seeds that grew this, and he warned me it was turning out to be a "Not Scotch Bonnet".
Today I discovered a couple pods this plant was hiding from me :)

Chris, just clicked to see the video and it says "this video is private" are you sure it's not porn :D
BWahahahahaha!!!
OK, I just fixed it....
Strange, I recently got a new smartphone, and it uploaded it as private...geez....

Video worked fine this time, awesome pods! I allow my small plants to pod too and do not pinch off. I believe it build strength in dat stalk, just like dem fending off wind sincen they young builds stronger stalks. Congrats on de pods mon!

Awesome! I just let them grow too. No trimming of stuff, the wind and varmints do enough of that....lol

You've got a regular farm going there - amazing! I hope stuff really takes off for you. I am so impressed with what you are doing in the midst of a desert.

Took me a while...but I am all caught up now. Holy geeze brother...you're gonna have some pickin to do! Wow, just the tomatoes would take more time than I have to spend! Good on ya...maybe in a couple years when I am retired I will have a grow that size! Your vids were very soothing with the sound of trickling water in the background....ahhhh. I know they have to go through a lot of water up there in that heat! How long/often do you run each station?

Wow Chris, been catching up!

I don't know if plant out is harder or the harvesting and processing. I do know this year with the additional prep work it had to be tough. Glad your maters have set, once that's done it's all downhill...well almost :D

Liking the trellis work there too!

I'm sure when things cool down a bit you'll have loads of pepper...I mean loads!

Take care, now you get to watch it grow!

Thanks Andy, It has been a ton of work expanding to 4 growing areas, but now I just get to water, weed, and watch it all grow :)
Things are starting to grow nicely, and the Fall harvests will be truly insane!!

Thanks Shane! In the Fall will be most of the harvesting, but you are right. It is going to be crazy!!
I love watering time....sitting at the picnic table in the main garden listening to the water. It gives the illusion of not being in a desert...lol

Lets see.....I pretty much water everything once a day unless it gets to 110 degrees, then I check stuff and water again as needed.
So the red bhut garden is the only one on a timer, and it runs for 30 minutes at 6am
The other 3 gardens (and also the porch plants and herb garden)  I water as I do my morning chores......it takes about 1 1/2 hours to water it all and feed the animals....

Yeah, plant out was a pain, mainly due to digging, prepping and installing the water systems in the 3 new garden areas.... It almost killed me...hahahaha
Anything else will be much easier!!

Those trellises are working out nicely... The bamboo was a section of fence we got at Lowes....I just cut the wires holding it together. Each piece ended up costing maybe 75 cents :)
Yep, tomatoes are setting, but there will be a lull in fruit setting during the hottest part of the summer....

I am thinking you are right about the loads of peppers ;) at least I am hoping you are...lol

Been a while since I checked in on the High Desert grow and man you got that desert growing down! Great mess of Turnips and it'll be interesting to see if that Kale grows or not. I'm hoping to have the new garden space built up in time to get a Fall garden in but still have a ways to go on getting it ready to plant.

Have a great week out there!

I was going to say, looks like your garden prevailed in the battle against the elements & pests (fingers crossed). Nice grow.

So far we are prevailing, but it has been a bit of a rough year...

Chris...hope you're just too damn busy harvesting to get on here brother. Can't wait to hear from you!!!

I wish!! Not a ton of hot peppers....yet.....
I have been harvesting a ton of food from the gardens though....most of our meals are at least partly made from the garden produce.

Thanks for asking guys!
OK... Here Goes...

This year has been even more challenging than normal.

Putting in 3 more garden areas slowed my plant out waaaaay too much...but next year I will be ready to rock way earlier!!

The Good news first...
Tomatoes are producing like crazy!! Tons of fresh salsa, pasta sauce etc...
Tomatillos producing great...lots of salsa verde going on at the dining room table ;)
Lettuce, Red Aztec Spinach, Kale, Chard, Eggplant, Wonderberries, Carrots, Radishes, Onions, Cilantro, 8 types of Basils, Oregano, Sage, Thyme, Rosemary and much much more producing lots for us to eat.
Yellow Squash and Zuchinni.....well.... I harvest 8-10 of them per day....I was getting buried alive in the kitchen, but gave a ton away!!
The Annuums are producing moderate amounts of pods... certainly more than we can eat...should get a whole lot of them in late october :)

The Bad news.... The Chinense varieties are LAGGING!!!!

I am also deeming 2013 the insane year of the garden pest...
I'll start with small and go to large....
Aphids
Unknown flat things that hatch into unknown flying things
Elm Beetles
Squash Beetles
Hornworms
Gophers
Squirrels
Rabbits
Goats

Anyway, here are current videos from 2 days ago, showing the state of affairs in the gardens :)

Garden #1
Garden #2
Need a little bump to post the 3rd video :)
