Devv-2017-Having a good time in the dirt

Another season has come and gone. Time to start a new one!

Although I did already a few weeks ago :shh: . After last years dismal (late) start I jumped in a bit early to insure I could have viable plants come dirt day. I can always cut them back, if I need to. I have to compile a list yet, but I'm growing the full spectrum. Sweets, to supers, based upon what we will actually use. Most of my list is to make LB happy; I'm really glad to see her infuse peppers in more and more dishes. Can't beat that when the wife takes interest ;)

Not the best pic; but the shelf is being sketchy, and I don't need all the babies bouncing off the floor.

Good luck to all this season

Looking nice Scott... Neem can really effect some plants (even from one strain of chilli to another) ... I know my hop plants didn't like it at all.
I love this place for learning and your hugel beds are something I have read about but never seen done ... I will be watching with interest!!

Thanks Trippa!

I was really disappointed to see the damage done by the Neem oil. I made sure to keep them out of the sun and lights until the next day, but it still hurt them. I think this is the first time I used it on the younger plants.

Dang, and me just three months away.... :mope:

Looks wonderful, Scott.

Thanks Eric!

You'll get there! Remember, I'm done come July 4th. We just have a different schedule ;)  Actually I see a lot better plant performance up North. The early onset of high temps really shortens the season here.

Scott, those are just wonderful looking plants. Congrats on the dirt day!
This seems so early to me... it was snowing just last week over here, and it can happen like last year did - in the end of april :):)

Thanks Uros!

Snow is a thing of my past. I grew up in New York, and it sure did snow there. ;)  Been here down South for 39 years come August. I've seen a light dusting that stuck once in all that time. A couple of ice storms, but that too is a rare deal.

I only used the fine wood chips that came out of the chipper with some cow manure mixed in. I ground that up last spring I think, When planting, I saw the mycelium all throughout. It had 5 or 6 months to mature, and I filled the hugel bed at least 3 times until the water came to the top. That and I added 8 lbs of tomato tone to the bed at creation time 3"s below the final layer. I'm hoping we're good here!

Here's the tomatoes, that I planted in the wannabe hugel bed. I dug down and added 10-12"s of the finely ground wood chips.

The 2 if the forefront were planted Saturday, the others last Saturday and Sunday. I feel that's some really good growth for week one. I put 2 tbls of Bloodmeal on top of the main rootball to kickstart things.

That looks great Scott! I'd certainly be happy with a week's tomato growth looking like that. Drive on!

Plants are looking good.  Must be nice to have some in the ground already.  Someday I hope to share that warm weather with you.  Its been really nice here for the most part, many days in the 60s and 70s already, very warm for here, but still to many freezes coming to think about anything outside this early.

Thanks Justin!

Come Monday, if the 10 day looks OK, I'm going to gamble on the rest of the plants. It's super rare to have 40's after the 21st.

So if I have been paying attention. You laid those Toms on their side in a shallow ditch until they stand up in a few days.Is all the dirt on them by then Scott.?

Sorry been out of town. I make my little trench about 4"s deep, as I flood them to ease the watering chore. At dirt day the tom's are in #1 pots. I dig down enough to cover the root ball with about 2"s of dirt; while shaping the path of the stem so it stays straight. And cover the stem with soil so just the first leaf I leaf I left on, and the crown is exposed. All the dirt is on them day one. So after that I just water. The next day they're already standing straight up, and you really have to look to see they were planted in that way.

Dirt day!

Been waiting all week! Finally a nice day.

Added a few more plants to fill the Hugel Bed. The soil is really warm under the IRT mulch. Also threw some rough mulch along side of it.

Wendy's Red Manzano. It needs to flower and set some pods ASAP.

A few of the OW's.

Nots: I trimmed the 2 lowest leaves yesterday, and will probably trim the next 2 lowest after they have grown some. Cages go on tomorrow.

Always great to see peppers been planted our into sunshine lol not jealous of your Texas climate at all Scott [emoji6]

Love the look of the red manzano, looks a healthy very established plant.
Your all set up for a fruitful season.
Watching keenly, keep up your good work.

I'm a little jealous, as well, Scott, but I know the
troubles you will face later on... I love our Summer and
Fall weather here, but the long, cool, wet Spring is hard
to love.  Great for the forests, but heck to pay for gardening!

Your plant-out looks great, buddy - with that weather
forecast, they will double in size in a week!
