Devv's 2014- Stick a fork in me, I'm done....

Time for the 2014 start...

Many of these plants were made possible by the generous people of the THP sending me seeds and pods Thanks!

I'm looking forward to warmer weather and dirt day!

I have a bunch of seeds started, and plants at all the stages.

Here's the grow bench, a T8 x4 on top and T5 x4 on the bottom, as you can see it's loaded.

I like starting the seeds in Jiffy Pellets, as soon as they stand up I trim the mesh off and plant them 1/2" proud in a pot, or in this case a cup.

A few plants living under the T5, I'm super impressed with this light!

Going to do some tilling will post more later

Looking mighty awesome Scott!  They will take off in no time with all that love they're gettin!

Are you still going to use those awesome homemade fabric containers this season or is that where the OW's are?

I think you are responsible for the mass envy here on the forum!

Have a great week!

Mike

Plants and the gardens are all looking good. I like HJeff's idea of pots. You could just line the outside of the garden with all of the overflow pots.

Scott your wide rows look great. You're probably right about the plants adjusting, not only the effects of the weather but the entire environment...different soil adjustment included.

Once you see the new growth you'll know the roots have "pitched tent".
I like the wind block and the shade framing. This will be very impressive to watch through the duration of the season.

Hope everything comes through in good order. Shaping up nicely.  I could use some irrigation now, but we still have a hard freeze coming and it could crack a check valve. Again. Is that bubbler designed to sprinke or flood the row?

We're getting that wind too. I should have covered the  onions after I watered them, just in case.
Thanks JJJ!

The bubblers are for flooding, well that's how I use them. I'm sure if higher they can be used to water shrubs or trees. Those Onions will be fine, I've had mine in the ground and seen mid 20's, doesn't phase them. I'm sure if the weather stayed low they would go dormant. This time of year should be NP.

You can always grow some in containers :)
I'm going to take your advise! I made a list of what I have left and will have this all sorted out by Monday.

I try to keep them happy ;)

I'm going to have to use them, I have a few late starts (who doesn't) that I want to grow out. So there will be some new bag ladies this season!

I have 40 in solo's, 14 in 1 gal, and 15 still under the lights. Dang it I'm insane!

I went as wide as I could, but it's going to be tight. I did want more spacing but couldn't resist starting most of the seeds I was gifted, no way I could plant them all, there's next season

The wind breaks saves them from the 40mph gusts we get when fronts blow in, and the sunshade, now to cover 1,200 square feet saves the pods from sunburn.

I'm hoping the ladies kick in soon, they're a little light in color, but I'm now giving them small doses of feed. Hopefully by next week they will start to put on some new growth.

Loving your glog I'm ready for the pod porn to begin!
Thanks Mike!

Pod porn should start soon, I think they need to recover a bit from being stuck in the dirt. But the plants are the right age to kick in.

The garden is looking great, really tight organised! It's gonna be a rain forest there in Texas ;)
Thanks Stefan!

It's going to be a jungle!

So today I planted some of the OW's, they will be in full sun, I hope they do OK. These are the ones I grew in the 20gal bags last season. I was really surprised, absolutely no new root growth. I just wanted them to stay alive, and they put some leaves on. They look a little rough, but the have been out in the sun weather allowing. I feel they will jump in and kick!

Red Bhut, last season this plant made really nice large pods. It has an open growth pattern because of mites topping it when it was just 5"s tall, guess who won the mite war? proofs below ;)
511.JPG

Texas Reaper, this gal made true Reaper pods, I'm hoping for early production.
512.JPG

Primo, the one was stingy with pod production last season, but they looked great!
513.JPG

Funky Reaper, need I say more? Such a star last season! The only super to produce like a Hab all summer long, just hundreds of pods, got three major pulls from this gal. This so far is the one plant I will OW until it gives up. It's also the only super OW that was in the dirt last season.

Warning, non pics! Here's my excuse for starting tomato seeds in January. 5 gal jug for comparison. I buried a good 10"s of stem along the ditch.
515.JPG

This is a pic of the north side of the garden. Garlic, potatoes, and farthest away green beans. this is the 3rd season using the same bean seeds, I keep them in the freezer, every one came up!

And yes I need to pay more attention to this part :shh:

Thanks for stopping by!

Cool, I like the looks of the overwinters.....nice crowns. They will be bushy, the Funky Reaper sounds like a good name for a Texas Hot Sauce.......hint.

Heck, I was going to start my 1st tray of Tomatoes tonight but looking at how big your plants grew  in over 2 months reminds me of what usually happens with the Tomatoes in my growroom...........explosion !.....I think I'll wait another day or two. I won't be able to harden off any plants until early May.

Stellar update............as usual !

Excellent updates Scott! Love the irrigation system. How many times you planning on giving them water? Last year our problem was too much water... it rained almost every day in April, and we had some massive rot problems in the lower branches.

Those extras going in pots? Seems like the thing to do. Where you gonna put your throwdown plant? Looks like you have the infrastructure to give Shane a run for his money.

People give ya seeds, and you gotta plant! I think I planted 90% of my THP seeds, just had to wait a season or so on a couple of varieties. Maybe they'll let me take over pepper production at the farm and I can grow everything. Guess it depends on how badly the farmer's market customers want superhots.

What is gonna happen in the last pic? Looks like you got some alliums there.

OW are looking well, as is everything else in the garden.  The last pic of the beans seems to show some garden space not being used between them and the fence.  I think you should get some more pepper seeds in the ground pronto!!!

Good growing to you!!!

I did make some deadly puree from the Funky's, trues and Primo's last year. 3 drops on 2 scrambled eggs is almost too much, you know, take breaks to compose ones self :onfire:

Tomatoes are what got me into gardening, and it has just expanded from there. Yeah they do get crazy don't they?

Thanks Adam!

I last watered on Sunday, and am watching them for signs of needing water. This season with the addition of the heavy soil I'm hoping I can wait longer. I tested the soil in a row and it's still wet, but the plants haven't grown into it yet, so as soon as I see some droop. I have a learning curve with this new soil, don't want to over water. I have some yellow plants I'm worried about though and rain is forecast this weekend. Just playing it by ear ;)

Those extras going in pots? Seems like the thing to do. Some will, I still have a full row to plant, but more wind is coming so I'm holding off. The new row is going to be North of the wind break along the railroad ties.  Where you gonna put your throwdown plant? You mean plants? I have plans for 3 or 4  Two in the dirt in the most Northern row, one in a 20 gal pot, and the other is up in the air. I may build a raised bed. Looks like you have the infrastructure to give Shane a run for his money. Of course my goal is to win, we'll find out in late October! He's not going to lay down, it's going to be tough to beat these other fantastic growers.

Yeah I did too, I just didn't have room for everything and some seeds came in too late, I have 15 or so that I know won't produce until fall, those are pot candidates.
What is gonna happen in the last pic? Looks like you got some alliums there.

To the left are 4 rows of red and gold potatoes, along the railroad ties is going to be a pepper row. I have a little area still open, but full sun growing here is a drag. Just everyday I come home to drooping plants that need water, that's why I keep adding to the sunshade.

I'm growing seed i got from some pods i bought off him last season.  Are yours naga looking?
The Funky Reapers are kind of Naga looking, but tiny and packed with flavor.

Here's a pic from last year, True Reapers on top Funky, Reapers on the bottom.

i very much like your overwintered ones, hope i can get one through this year aswell
Thanks Ohmatic!

My climate is pretty warm, I dug them out of the 20gal bags or the dirt and kept the roots equal to the top in size. I put them in 5 gal pots and when it was cold they spent their time in the shop. The shop is insulated but has no heat, I don't think it got into the 40's there more than twice. I watered them 2 times from Dec when I pulled them until 3 weeks ago when it warmed up nicely. My goal was just to keep them alive.

Those OW are looking primo!
You are way ahead of the curve.
Thanks JJJ!

They had an easy winter IMHO. They're in full sun, so they need to set pods ASAP! They have 6 to 8 weeks to get rocking before we see 95-100°.

Weathers cooperating temp wise, but more winds are on the way. Hope they hang!

My last row is going in along the railroad ties, the sunshade should still shadow that row. In that pic we're looking West, not much room before we run into the mulch pile and leaves. I do have some room to the North of the potatoes and the beans, but in full sun? The peppers won't do anything. The area North of the landscape timers which still has rye growing dying is still 100% sand. I just always run out of $$$ to finish that part; I did till in a bunch of compost the last 2 years but it needs heavy soil added as it needs way too much watering. Next fall I won't have to do anything but till in compost and manure in the top 2,500 square feet so I'll add some heavy soil and expand the sunshade over the North area some more.

It never ends :shh:

Those wide shots of the garden always get me a little homesick...

I had the reapers and the "funky" or "Naga" reapers also last year. They sure were good....saved some seeds on this end too. Hope those OW plants do you as proud as they should. They look ready for takeoff!!! Your season is sure to be epic with the starts you have and those OWs...you're sure to produce a nice first round before the heat sets in.
