diapers anyone?

I took a large steel bowl (I'm sure my wife would kill me if she knew) and put in the hydro-gel from 2 yellow'ed diapers.
Then I filled it with about a 1/2 gallon of filtered water and mixed it up until it was about the consistency of apple sauce.

Next I took a large tote and started mixing about 5 gallons of DRY soil mix. Then I added the the hydro-gel to the the soil and mixed it all up. Its crazy how much volume it adds to the soil.

I would hate for those peppers to end up doing very well knowing that when you bite into that pepper you are actually eating your child's urine/feces. Very interesting thread! I'll be planting dirty diapers in mass if this turns out to work lol

I rather have my kids urin in there than that of some random cow / pig / horse / who also might get healthy doses of medicine /hormones or antibiotics

Just to be clear, I didn't use brown diapers only yellow. Not that I'm agents it, but "humanure" would have to compost for quite a while before I would consider using it for anything edible. Just my personal preference.

Urin on the other hand, not that big of a deal. And I know whats up with my kids health and I dont have any concerns. Its not like Kelp, Fish, Worm castings, Manure, are more sanitary ;)

Besides ; human urine is sterile, whereas with brown diapers you might get into all kinds of e-coli kind of things

Btw: I lucked out today, finding an older bag of undersized diapers... 6 of those rendered a total of approx 5 liters of the polymer. Those will be used for the chile's, whereas the yellow diapers will go into my garden...

Best of luck
Al

I get like 20 npk'd of those a day and some dark ones.

Lmk and I can start shipping them ASAP before they start piling up. Your choice of dark or regular. :D

would a self addressed envelope be sufficient, or would you like to see moneys involved in this kind of transaction? :-)

... we might as well do a swap ... I have a bag full of yellowish toe-nail clippings from my long gone great-grandfather ...high in funghi ...

anybody ?

:D

on a slightly more serious note ...

here is what 6 virgin-diapers produced:

... probably about 1,5 gal. of gel ... with the "going rate" of 5-10% in the mix, this should be enough to improve/aeriate some 20 gal. of soil for upbotting...

again, I am collecting the yellow ones to be used in our 800sf veggie garden (we are in autumn here, so i might till the gel in next month or so) - i guess 2 - 3 full 5gal. buckets should do the trick ...

cheers,
Al "putting phlegm in my garden" B.

UPDATE:

this is the expanded content of 2 or 3 diapers ...

I later mixed the soil up with the hydrogel ... but its really interesting - the line is 5+ yards

and we will be planting rocket (ruccula) later on ... so stay tuned for further updates ...

and also in very wet zones - as it absorbs a lot of water that would otherwise just run off leading to erosion ...

its a pretty good buffer - no doubt about it!

cheers

Yes this could help with permaculture in over used parts of the world like the Midle East, Africa, or Aisia.

some (mild) update ...

here is what 1 weeks worth of yellow diapers look like ... thats right - 5 gals of expanded hydrogel !!!

my guess is that this would be enough to improve anywhere from 5 - 10 m2 (50 - 100ft2) of soil.

and the best ... free of charge ...

in a month or 2 I should have enough to bring our 100m2 vegetable patch up to speed ... and we are entering late fall, which is a good season to do so ...

coming up next:

GERM'ING pepper seeds in a (new) diaper ... :shh:

stay tuned ...
