Do It Yourself Thread...

The Scaler was made by using an old broken plastic scaler I had as a template, this included the teeth/blade, then added my own improvements.http://www.toptrout.co.uk/acatalog/Round_Stainless_Steel_Fish_Scaler.html
look familiar?
I used files and rasps mostly, as I prefer them over Dremels etc.. I find anything electric can somrtimes take off too much material and before it's too late you've ruined the piece.
The Scaler had quite a few coats of a Satin varnish. I feel the satin makes the wood still seem raw.

SR.
Well, SR, you improved massively over the template. Somehow, you managed to transform a lowly fish scaler into a beautiful piece of art. Nice work!

You first STH, where is all this beautiful glass work we've been hearing so much about?

SR.
...I never said it was beautiful...just that I "did" it.
I'll post something later, SR. :D

WOW!!  How, what, glass, where?? Amazing!!

Now those pieces need an explanation........please.

SR.

Aw, shucks. Thank you, SR. You may be very sorry that you asked for an explanation! These are quite small pieces, with the tallest being about three inches. They are made with various brands of glass rods which were melted with a bench-mounted torch and manipulated with various tools. I add a lot of my own colorants to the standard glass which accounts for the super saturated hues you see. Some of them were made "off-hand" using a stainless veterinary tool that I found at a yard sale and repurposed into a miniature blow pipe. Some were spun around clay-coated mandrels which created a hole running through them. The ones with holes can be used as lamp pulls, jewelry beads, miniature display pieces, etc. The stands I mentioned making would be for displaying these things.

^^^This was the short explanation.^^^ I restrained myself from possibly boring you into a coma.

Duuuuuude! Freakin' siiiiick! You might want to make friends with our Colorado, Washington and soon our Oregon and Alaskan members! I really like #1 and #3!

Nice pieces. I got a few glass pieces around here but I Didn't make them myself. Yes yes, they need a good cleaning. I need to pack them away anyhow since I can't smoke anymore for a while... stupid job.

I got a few spoons around here too that I can't seem to find. One with a glass frog on it and some others... wonder where they are hiding.

Hey, thanks for the compliment, TNR. Having withdrawal from hot glass atm. Moved recently and equipment is in storage. At least there's a new addiction to fill in for a while. :)

Thanks, D3monic. I'm pretty amazed at some of the pipemakers. Very complex and intricate work. Never got into big borosilicate work as my setup is just too small. I work soft glass which isn't the best for pipes. I did have a couple of requests for thick flat beads with large holes. I made 'em crazy looking and they were a big hit. Didn't need to ask what they were using them for. ;0

Nice glass. I played a festival a few weeks back and there was a blower there that was insane. His name was David Schwartz. Seems like a cool hobby but I would never have time and I would want to make money off it,lol. Not good qualities for a hobby.

I made a mistake,I thought that your pic was an Ergonomic pic of the handle of a wife friendly  , old time kitchen appliance.
Something a Lady/Wife might feel comfortable to grab and use everyday. :)

Maybe a pump handle to pump back and forth to make whatever it is work? LOL
