DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

Love the bug on bug action ;) Plants are looking good too :D
Nice Doc, those plants are looking really happy in their new homes and what better placd for a little ladybug love, cue romatic music ;)
Awesome Doc! Love the pod and bug porn combo... nice touch!

Ha! Thanks guys! I walked around checking everything yesterday afternoon and there are still quite a few "couples." I'm guessing there will be quite a few ladybug eggs being laid soon.

Gotta start getting ready for work, but thought I'd snap some pics of the last wave of greenhouse guys. Most of these are gifts I've gotten from my friends here at THP. Speaking of "Thanks guys!"

Devil's Tongue White from Shane (stc3248):

DTWShane_zps0ac2eb98.jpg

This is Jamison's tray! All four of these are from seed he sent me. Devil's Tongue White is to the far right. Not sure what is going on with the Trinidad Seasoning. It has looked like that for a month and hasn't grown, at all. I gave it some 6-4-4 yesterday, so we'll see if that helps it along.

jamison-1_zpsbca66c1d.jpg

PaulG sent me some Orange Rocoto seeds that I got a nice seedling from. Kapija is from Rick (stickman). The Yellow Rocoto I bought from Peppergal.com. Bodeen highly recommended the Jimmy Nardello, so here is one grown from seeds obtained from pepperlover.com. Also is a Giant Jalapeno that I got as a freebie with the JN.

gifts_zps4932101d.jpg

Finally, I had mentioned before that SocalChilehead sent me a very generous gift of pepper and non-pepper seeds. Lemon and Thai Sweet Basil shown here. For those who have not grown basil, the seeds are pretty cool. Once soaked, they get a gelatinous layer around them. Presumably it helps protect them from drying out.

Have a great day, everyone!

Looking great Doc...as for the little seasoning, when everything else in the tray looks good, you can probably blame it on genetics. Small chance it had a fungus gnat larvae eating on its roots or something similar. I wouldn't sweat trying to save it too much and risk throwing its neighbors off. Glad to see you have DTWs from a couple sources up and running. Hope they both grow true for you!

Sounds like you owe us all a cigar ;)

Nice giftages from THP guys! Looks great cept the little Trinidad Seasoning, I have one of those too. Cept mines a red ghost and its not growing at all, I’ve treated for gnats but still stays like a little punk. I’m keeping dem all to see what happens, good luck with yours!

Have a great hump day and as always, great update and pics from the Brent Estate of Peppers \o/

You're probably right there, Shane. I have enough plants at this point that if one doesn't make it, oh well. There is always next year. Next watering I'll add some Bt and see if that helps. Really stoked about the DTW! There is something pretty cool about white chiles. I have the DTW, White Bhut, 7 Pot White, Giant White Hab, White Bullet Hab, and Blonde growing. Might have to make a white hot sauce if I get a good harvest in a few months.
Thats awesome Doc! The T Seasoning might be getting over watered?? Or Shane could be right too. Last year that was the first Chinese to pod up. You got quite the grow man, keep up the good work!
Thanks to you, man! The Trin Seasoning looked like that even when it was indoor under the lights in the Rapid Rooter. When I put it in the planter, it had a few root hairs coming out, so I thought it might pick up it's color and growth once it got into some fortified planting mix. If it doesn't respond to some ferts, then I think it probably is one genetic misfit. At least the Perfume is looking OK. Really looking forward to the Armageddon F-2, also. Wondering what sort of phenotype it will be being an F-2 hybrid.
Sounds like you owe us all a cigar ;)

Thanks Ramon. Always a pleasure having you drop in. Once I see the little red and black alligators running around the plants it will be virtual cigars for everyone. And that is a great Pink Floyd song!

The people on this board rock! I'm really hoping to be able to share seeds, etc., out of my grow with others here. Everyone has been so kind and I'd really like to reciprocate. Good luck with the sickly Red Ghost.

Looking good Doc. Things are rocking over there. Pods will be popping realllll soon. Super excited for plant out. I have so much to do to get my plot ready. I dont know if I asked you before or if you mentioned it, but will you be in ground or pots? I really want to put a few in pots so I can overwinter some.

Following all this with interest, I will be especially interested to see what differences you find in the 7 Pot White vs. the Giant White Hab. There is some question, in my own mind and I've seen it expressed elsewhere, that they are the same thing. (I've mentioned this somewhere already. If was here, please excuse my repetition.)

Hi Doc
Glad to see you have a Kapia going... It's a long-season Annuum, so I'm glad you've got it as far along as you have. Make sure you stake it well because it'll be very topheavy when the peppers start coming!

Thanks, Pia. They're coming along it would seem. There are so many expert growers on this board that I needed to start in October so that my plants would (hopefully) be similar in size and maturity by the Spring. I'll bet you are dying for your area to thaw and stay warm! My grow will entirely be in containers. I'm not sure which is more work. As you said, you need to ready your plot, then dig holes, then plant the plants. For containers, I combine potting mix with amendments for each up-pot, then go from small pots, to 2 gallon, then up to 5 gallon. Either way, it's a labor of love, no? Looking forward to seeing your plants take off once they get in-ground! Good luck on the OW's, although we're a few months away from that. :)

Thanks Sawyer. I too have seen statements about the two being the same. We will see. Duffy says there is no such thing as a 7 Pot White. If a naturally occurring mutation occurs in the gene(s) encoding pod pigmentation rendering those enzymes inactive (white pod), I don't see why the 7 Pots would be exempt to such a naturally occuring mutation. It would probably be recessive though, unless the knockout was a transcription factor that binds and blocks a genetic regulatory element. In that case, it could even be dominant. Also someone on THP had a 7 Pot White they cut in half and photographed. It had little pools of yellowish oil in it. I've never seen that in a Hab, but have seen it in various 7 Pots and other superhots. If the 7 Pot White is real, I'm hoping that is what I have growing. At least that plant looks healthy. My Giant White Hab not so much. I had two. One was developing a mosaic to the leaves, so I tossed it in case it had some sort of virus. The other is much smaller and has a lot of growing to do to catch up.

Thanks, Rick. Having to stake a plant because it is top heavy from productivity is a nice problem to have! Good to know about it being long season. I won't worry if it takes a while to bud, flower, and pod. Next time around I have to take a shot of the other one you sent me, the Rapires F-1. It's about 6 - 7 inches tall now! Anything growing from the seeds I sent you?

Glad to hear the seeds I sent you are growing well. I haven't actually planted any of the seeds you sent, but have distributed them fairly widely... Some are in the States, Australia, Canada and Japan, being grown as we "speak". I've kept some for myself too, and will plant them next year. I'm fully extended this year with my 2x6 meter pepper plot and all the varieties I have going. Finding room for more would be problematic...

White pods i tell you... I didn't go for the white bhut this year. Wanted to watch that one fron the sidelines. But did get grant's jellybean wht hab. I think it's a Yucatan vs the Peruvian. I had 3 jellybean come up. But only one of the Peruvian. And have 3 giant whites for added chances to compare against the 7 whites. They all are doing well but still small. I Should post in my glog a pict of the 7 white that has always seem weak, so you can see. No matter how much formula, it always grows out light green. Like bad looking light green yellow. New growth start out normal and then fades. ? The other 7 wht is growing normal, so who knows. Same conditions and feeding. Maybe recessive weak genes at work. Looking foward to them all, saying no yellow pods allowed. And also thinking about crosses to make with them. And then of course, white powder! Like Miami's finest! I mean hottest!
With you ahead of me, i will be watching like a hawk. Or just frequently checking here like i always do! One or the other. For sure!
Hopefully some of the ladybugs will stay put all summer long!
That Armageddon is looking bhut-ish. Isn't that one of the parents?

looking good Doc... hopefully our weather stays consistent... glad we didnt get any rain this past week... as for the trinidad seasoning let me know as i have a couple extra seedlings of that.. the jay's took off from the start and slowed down once i put in soil.. the pod is killing it.. its turning so i might harvest it soon.. i also trimmed the other nodes and leaves in hopes of a better bounce back

Now I am super curious....
What is the Armageddon pepper like?
With a name like that, it must be fairly hot.
I imagine it is super hot, but other than the breeder, I know little about it. It is one of Vladan's (915River) crosses: http://www.rainbowchiliseeds.com/catalog/i569.html. He says it is an F2 hybrid. I wonder if those pods in the pic are from the F1 plants. If so, who knows what the F2 will look like. All part of the surprise, I guess. If the pics are of F2 pods, he must have grown and saved a lot of seed to be able to sell them and imply this is what the pods will look like. So, we will see.

Miami's finest...LOL! I honestly don't know what the parent strains are of the Armageddon. The pod phenotype is similar to the Sepia Serpent, but I'm pretty sure that is just coincidence. It wouldn't surprise me if it was part Bhut. Then again, I know little about it other than it is a superhot and that Vlad bred it. Sorrry to hear about the one 7 White. At least you have another that looks good.. My one so far seems pretty healthy. It sounds like you and I regard white chiles similarly. Since they most likely are a completely recessive phenotype, to get a plant that makes these albino pods while still expressing enough dominant genes to grow healthy seems like it could be a bit of a challenge, or at least a lower probability event. There probably are a number of plants that grow from these white pod seeds that are genetic misfits and become stunted and/or die. Hopefully the plants we have growing that are robust will grow the desired white pods.

Thanks DeNNiZ. At least it seems the lack of frost has been consistent. That in and of itself is huge! I'll let you know about the Trin Seasoning, but honestly I have too many plants as it is. I've got a few other cool heatless varieties, so if one doesn't make it, I'm still alright. But thank you for the very kind offer! I'm sure the JPGS will turn around just fine. Your thumbs and fingers are pretty green!

Thanks for stopping in, guys!

I agree there is no apparent reason why the 7 Pots would be excluded from having a white podded variety. And that is a good point about the oil. Duffy himself says of the GWH, "this variety comes from an unknown area of the Caribbean", so who is to say what it really is. I was reading an article recently on nanopore-sequencing of DNA and it seems likely low-cost sequencers will start becoming available in the next few years. A lot of questions like this can be definitively answered once that happens.

I don't have the 7 Pot White, but I do have six plants of the GWH. Two of them are on a par with the rest of my plants in terms of size and health. The other 4 germinated late and are small in size, but quite healthy looking. It'll be fun to see how things play out.

Yes, it will be very cool when low-cost sequencing becomes available. It will resolve a lot of unanswered "questions." Looking forward to seeing how your GWHs grow out.
Very nice!

Hope your grow continues to excel!

Thanks Scott, and thanks for stopping in.
Hey m8 have u tried those bags yet? The only prob I've found with them is they break down quick and if you try move them the bottom blows out lol, but they work well as don't heat up
Are you talking about the white plastic Gro Bags or the blue fabric Walmart bags? This is my first season trying either. So far, they seem to be OK, but they haven't seen 100+ degree temps yet.

More plants need up-potted, but I'm not sure if I'm going to have time this weekend to work on them. For now, here is something I saw when I got home from work yesterday evening.

Golden Cayenne (SocalChilehead):

Serrano (Pepperjoe freebie):

Funny, the Serranos had decent flavor, but zero heat. Same with the Pepperjoe Jalapeno freebie. On the contrary, the Golden Cayenne pods are quite piquant!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

THem golden cayennes are awesome looking. GOnna have to try those sometime for sure. The Armageddons will be fun to watch for sure. Vlad sent me some Armageddon F1 powder and it was insanely hot. I'm hoping for mean scorp looking chocolates!

You and Shane are killing me with your full grown plants!!!

Seriously, your grow is amazing! I'd never guess this is your first full season. You sure seem to know what you are doing.

I tried growing the Golden Cayenne this year, but no germination after two sowings. I'll have to try a different seed source next time.

One question for you. Do those plastic grow bags have any drainage holes? They sure look like they would topple over in the wind once the top growth is taller than the height of the bag, but I like the price of them.
