DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

Nice update, the plants look very healthy!

Hopefully you'll be knee deep in pods soon...

Thanks, Devv! With the way these things are budding up, I might be buried in pods! One can only hope, right? ;)

So I guess I can spill the beans, here. I wanted to do more up-potting this past weekend, but a lot of time was taken up by my old truck. It is a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 SS/T that I've owned since it was new. It has been very reliable but in the past year one thing after another kept going wrong with it. I had a mobile mechanic come out and look at it. He told me it would cost more to fix it than it was worth! Well, at least he's an honest mechanic. Since it only gets driven on occasions when I need a truck, like Home Depot runs, trips to get bails of potting soil, fishing trips, etc., I was going to just let some things on it not work. The final straw came when I went to have it smogged and it failed because of a check engine light code, but no check engine light on the dashboard! So, I decided it was time for a new truck. After researching all the offerings, I decided on a 2013 Ram 1500 R/T. Sunday afternoon we had family over, but the rest of the weekend was spent researching, locating, and negotiating a purchase on this new truck. I just took delivery yesterday after work.

Here is the old truck:

It was dark when I got home, so not the best conditions for pics, but I snapped a quick one with my phone of the outside of the new whip:

Love the new truck! The R/T occupies the same spot in the Ram 1500 lineup as the SS/T did back in '98. The difference in features and amenties is incredible.

Haha! Love the view in the side mirror of your first pic! Great truck...I had a 99 dodge bare bones model. Vinyl bench...roll up window cranks, V6, Power Nothing model. I have an 02 Dodge now...many more bells and whistles, but it's fading fast. Daughter drives it to school and back, and I use it for HD runs as well. Won't be long 'till its done. I also have a 1990 Bronco that needs some work, but is running. Like your theory on the plants and how they shift gears as well. Your Doc was showing on that post. In my ultra running training I did some reading on mitochondria and how they boost cold tolerance...may be on to something there!

Sounds like death by pod, not a bad way to go ;)
Wow, love dat new truck … congrats Doc, you be styling!
Thanks, Ramon! Drove it to work today instead of the GT-R. That says something. I'm not sure what, but it says something! LOL.

Sharp eye, man! Totally missed the mirror view...busted! Sounds like you might be in the market for a new truck, as well. The Rams were totally redone for 2013. IMHO they did a great job. Now we'll see how longevity is. Apparently Fiat took over Chrysler. Hopefully, it's not a "Fix it again, Tony!" Regarding the mitochondria, yes, they can uncouple oxidative metabolism from electron transport to generate heat. This was first discovered in "brown fat," in rats, I believe. The fat is brown because the cells are rich in mitochondria, unlike regular fat cells.

Thought I'd post up a couple of daylight pics of the new whip.

Here is the interior. Keep in mind the interior of the 1998 SS/T above when looking at this one. The R/T occupies the same spot in the current Ram 1500 lineup as the SS/T did back in 1998.

My husband has pretty much that same 1998 Dodge Ram 1500. It's even the same color, minus the stripes! Your interior was in much better condition though. Could be because he uses his for work, or because we have three kids. Who knows?

Anyway, nice score on the new truck! Wish we were in a position for an upgrade ...

Thanks, Bonnie. We were fortunate to be in a position to get a new one. Last year at this time we definitely were not. I think your husband's interior probably can be explained by use. The SS/T was my daily driver only from '98 to '04. After '04 it only saw maybe 200 miles a year.
Nice ride brent. It's crazy how luxed out everything is now. It's night and day between the two.
btw...
I looked in my notes and the variegatta was a freebie from an Amazon purchase. Only got one plant out of the seeds. Was first year with it.
Thanks Jason. Yeah, I could not believe the interior when I first saw it. Looks more like a car than a truck! OK, good to know about the Variegatta. Going to continue growing it out. Like you said, I'll save the seed from this plant and see what I get out of it next season, too.
Sweet ride you got there Doc...

Second pic can any one spot the Doc?
Thanks, Portuge. Hahaha! Shane busted me on that one, too. I didn't even notice it when I posted up the picture.
YOOOOOOOOOOOO!! That is a sweet 1500. I bet my hubby would look super hot in that. Oh well. Like you, he has to buy his own. Aahahahaaaaa. Very nice Doc. Please enjoy it. Let yer herrrr down and do a woohoo going 95 mph for me.
Thanks, Sanarda! I actually drove it to work yesterday instead of my GT-R, which says a LOT! In fact, I think I'll take it to work today, as well. ;)

Awesome truck. Time to get that Chilli scented air freshner and hang it from the rear view mirror lol

Thanks, Lourens. Should I get red, yellow, brown, or purple? ;)

Well, no time to work on the chiles this past weekend and probably not this coming weekend with Easter and all that. I'm thinking a good number of the plants are probably getting a bit rootbound in the 2 gallon gro bags. Probably also running out of nutes, as some of the color is fading a bit. Definitely not overwatered. I got home a bit early today, so every plant got fed. Hopefully that will get them through a couple of weeks until I can up-pot the larger ones.

Here is the mix they got:

Fox Farms Grow Big (6-4-4)
General Organics CaMg+
Mad Farmer Silica Shield (Potassium Silicate, 0-0-3)
General Organics Bio Weed
General Organics Bio Root (1-1-1)
Bushdoctor Microbe Brew
and of course, SuperThrive.

The one and two gallon bags got 500 ml each and the five gallon bags got 2000 ml each. I tried this mix about a week ago on some yellowish overwinters and they really greened up.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

I recommend the new fragrance called "Carolina Reaker". Quite a strong fragrance, but sure to keep you awake on those long trips!

Nice alchemy on that mix... they will shoot up for sure on that!

Have an awesome weekend. I'm going to the farm now... all farm hands on leave, so I will need to water for sure!

Nice Doc, I love the truck. I went from a Ford Ranger 4x4 to a Ram 2500 with the Cummins Diesel and drove that truck till we adopted our 2 young'uns. Had to trade it in on a Town and Country and pitched a fit about it till I got into it for a test drive and saw how much room there was with all the back seats laid down. Of course the boss makes me put down a tarp when I haul and garden stuff. I guess the best thing though was on the last trip we took I stuck a DVD into the player and didn't hear a single "are we there yet" till the movie was over :)

Have a great Easter Doc,
