DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

cupsandseeds.jpg

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

Plants look amazing they are starting to bud that is awesome I am finally going to start feeding everything a fresh batch of tea. Can not wait to see your plants start to fruit

Thanks, Fernando. Saw the tea in your Glog. Gonna catch up with posts in the morning. :)

Here's a quick update. Things are growing. The buds have not yet opened, so no need for close-ups on them at this time. Here are a couple of plants I grew from seed earlier this year:

Chinese 5 color:
chi5.jpg

Got my first couple of ripe ones off of this plant. They taste pretty good for an ornamental.

Anaheim:

anaheim-3.jpg

Gonna have to keep this Anaheim through next year since my seeds had very poor germination. One weakly looking seedling that just popped yesterday, almost two months later.

This is supposed to be a Datil. Do they start out round like this? I'm thinking it's a not-Datil. Please correct me if I'm wrong:

notdatil.jpg

These are either going to be Brains or Morugas:

morugaorbrain.jpg

The guys above and the rest of my established plants are still outdoors. Our night-time lows have been no lower than upper 40s. I can pack them in the little greenhouse on the ground if we get a frost, though.

Speaking of the little greenhouse, here are a few pics of its residents, smallest to largest:

I've had a few stubborn varieties that haven't germed yet: Aribibi Gusanito, White Devil's Tonge, Red Bhut,, and got a wimpy seedlings from Paprika, Red Rocoto, and Giant Mexican Rocoto seeds. So, I just started these soaking tonight. Also, I couldn't help myself. A few more varieties got started: Madballz 7, Bishop Crown, Bih Jolokia, Bahamian Goat, and Fresno.

That's it for now. I could add some more photos tomorrow morning if any bumpage comes along. ;)

Also, Stickman talked about this Serbian condiment called Ajvar. It sounded good so I tried to make some. Turned out awesome. Posted a thread on it: http://thehotpepper.com/topic/36298-ajvar/

Happy Holidays!

Brent

Following in ur foot steps... i to ordered bahamian goat and madballz from junglerain. Looking foward to both for sure! And devil's white too. Almost forgot that one.
Btw... looking good! Greenhouse is a charm.

Thanks, GA GH. That indeed is where those three seed varieties are from. Forgot to mention that the Bishop's Crown seeds are from pods you sent me, the Bih Jolokia seeds were out of pods from PaulG, and the Fresno seeds were from a store-bought pepper.

That is some great poddage going on over there that is always great news especially during winter. Don't worry about the Datil it might not set true pods, but it is just a wait and see approach. The seedling are really taking off what are you feeding them. The Greenhouse is amazing I can not wait to pick up one or two up before everything starts to take off. Hopefully the fungus gnats or white flies are to much of a hassle, since I see your using the sticky trap I just got rid of them this week hopefully won't know until later in the week. Those are some great additions I am sure you will find more later to add since there is always time. I still have a ton of varieties I purchase that did not grow and will hold off until next season. I would wish you luck but you don't need it the way things look keep up the great work. Happy holidays to you and your family.

Hey, Doc, that greenhouse looks great; all new and shiny! The plants
look like they are lovin' it in there. The budding issue is no big deal.
I tried pinching last year, but after a while it became too much of a
chore, so I stopped. It didn't seem to slow the plants down a bit to be
making flowers. I now use 6500K lights, but at that time I was using
5000K tubes, so that may have prompted a little more budding. I figured
that by trying to pinch the little buds I was risking damage to the plant
growth tips.

You guys rock! You've got such awesome grows and you comment on mine. Nice!

Fernando, not worried about the Datil, at all! Who knows? It might be some cool F1 cross!

PaulG, I've been guilty. I've been running 5000k tubes. But I agree with ya. Pinch the buds and risk killing the tips. They're growing! We'll see. Thanks for stopping in!

Nice to see some podage!!!

Thanks, man! Here are a few more from my established plants making some pods.

Yellow Bhut:

Odd-shaped Peter Pepper Pods:

TSMB:

Funny, the first two to three pods had the "normal" phenotype, then those that followed are random -- Jamaican Yellow Mushroom:

Goronong:

Finally, a Dougie (!):

Butch T (probably):

Brain:

Finally, this is a Bonnie "World's Hottest Habanero." These grew out as Fataliis for others that had grown them. Looks like they might do the same for me:

bonwhh-1.jpg

I've got some clone pics, also. But that was ten pics. Bump, anyone?

Thanks for looking.

Bump... All lookin' good Doc! I am officially jealous of your greenhouse setup!

Thanks, bro, and thanks for the bump! Ya know, the cost of the greenhouse was not that much. Really inexpensive relative to what most of them sell for. FWIW.

Caribbean Red:

crpods.jpg

The other plants making pods I've posted pics of before.

A while back I tried my hand at cloning some of my established plants. I lost a few cuttings, but eight out of ten in Rapid Rooters took. There was another one I did before those using soil and it took, as well.

The first was a cutting off of my Aji Panca. I'm not sure why I'm trying to clone it. It's a beautiful three foot tall plant that has yet to make a flower! Anyway, plenty of tips to practice on.

apclone2.jpg

Transplanted it and the other eight today. The other eight:

clones.jpg

Pretty much all of them looked like this as far as roots go:

cloneroots.jpg

So they are now in soil and gave them some half-strength 6-4-4. Decided to re-attempt the two that didn't take and tried three that I didn't already try to clone. CloneX is great stuff!

Finally, Curry Leaf Tree:
currytree-1.jpg

That's it! Thanks for the bump, Rick. And thanks for stopping in.

Hope you and everyone else is having a great week!

Brent

Looking like your well on your way to a fabulous 2013 Doc... Keep the pics rollin...
Thanks, Portuge. Not sure what I'm going to do with all of them once they "grow-up," but I'll figure something out.
Great grows and like the info on cloning!

BTW: Your Peter Peppers are they the 'uncircumcised' version?!?!?
Hahaha, nice! Thanks for stopping in. I was surprised at the cloning success rate. After reading a few threads on it, it's really not that hard. Pretty sure CloneX is the key.
@ DocNrock...

How many plants you got growing ?

quite an interesting glog here...give you a +1 on some of the planters you've used.
Thanks for stopping in, K. skwerl. I think it is about 130, but some are back-ups. There are about 100 different varieties. Regarding the planters, I couldn't argue with the price ($1 each) and the way they allowed me to consolidate my grow in the 6x8 constraints of the greenhouse.
looking awesome bro. those plants loving that greenhouse. and whats so wierd with the shape of those peter peppers. my peter looks just like that,
Thanks, Sicman, and thanks for stopping in.
Green and wrinkled? ;)
Bwahahahaha!

MMM pod porn is looking great along with the Curry tree. The Clonex is awesome got a free sample from the hydro shop and gave it to my neighbor to try out on his special plants he was about to get 6 out 6 plants to root. Have an awesome holiday break with your family
