DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

cupsandseeds.jpg

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

I love the praying mantis, I brought back 3 or 4 egg sacks from my winter hunt trips.

Nice! And thanks for the bump!

The last round of germination had a good number of plants that were overdue for up-potting:

I think my Red Rocoto might make it, afterall!

Some of these guys were overdue for up-potting. Fresno:

And really overdue! Aribibi Gusanito:

HP22B:

...with buds!

But honestly, a lot of my chinenses look like that! Hoping for late-spring supers!

I seem to have a few "nots" growing, as well.

This is a backup that is supposed to be a White Bullet Hab:

Then I got hungry. Dogs with chopped peppers:

chilidogs_zpscaf82576.jpg

And I got an awesome surprise in the mail last week. No forewarning, at all. Fernando (SocalChilehead) sent me some dried pods and an incredible variety of seeds. These are going to have to wait, though, as I have way too many plants. But I did put the non-pepper seeds in the germinator for my Wife!

That's it for now. But we are forecast for another frost on Wednesday, so everything goes back in the g-house today. I'll try to snap some more pics...if anyone wants to see them. ;)

BUMP BUMP BUMP

Friggin awesome Doc!
Waiting! Do you always leave folks in your waiting room this long Doc?

You guys are awesome!

Man...your plants look great! Budding up on the supers too. Fernando is a Kick A$$ dude for sure. I have some dwarf Pak Choy up and running. and some regular that needs to be put in the ground today...never ending. Great updates brother! Can't wait to see the first little Reaper peeking out from behind a flower...sweet that I get to check out the genetics I got going through your glog!!!

The white hab should be an interesting surprise ,nice score with the seeds!
The Abribibi was loaded with roots, pot that baby up and it will be loaded with new growth.
All your plants seem to be doing fine, did you put the dog under the flame to melt the cheese?......they look yummy!

Nice to read you’ve been having awesome weather and were able to get your up-potting done but dam some of those plants almost look too big for some of the bags or is that trick photography ~_^

The Praying Mantis are super cool, I’ve debated if I should buy some a few times. Strange that I never see them around, as a kid growing up here I use to see them all the time and now poof dem gone :( Not sure if they’d last now and would hate to spend monies if that became the case. Plus I’m not sure how they’d do with my current treatment agenda of DE, Volck oil and soapy water spray. Who knows the ones I saw as kids were probably killed off by all the pest control guys :/

Great job on the clones, it's nice to read that they’re flowering now ... bet you a proud papi now ~_^ Definitely keep us informed on your Jalapeño experiment as I’m growing a few myself and will possibly start more in the summer. 2 of mine are doing good and 3 not so good and I’ve tried everything …

Don’t feel bad on dem overdue up-potting, I think it happens to the best of us, but whoa that Aribibi Gusanito must be seriously pissed at you ~_^ Everything looks great Brent and dam you for posting that killer frankfurter, it looks great!!! It’s now 5 PM here and now I’m starving, thanks!

You asked if we want more pics, sure after you move them all back in, why not post how they look all snuggled up for the next frost ;) More seriously, great job brethren Brent and keep up dat great grow mon!!!

Holy crap. "monster infinity" from that seed order just plain sounds evil!

Good stuff with the up-potting. I'm jealous of your red rocoto :)
I took a vid of me eating a Monster Infinity pod last year from Dave (gnslngr)...Maybe not "hottest" per se, but damn close if not. Worst throat pain EVER! Vid was in a room full of annoying kids at a party...my "friends" weren't so helpful either with their commentary. I have two up and running from seeds out of that pod...very cool looking pod it was, but WOW! :fireball:

Thanks, and he most certainly is! I can't believe how fast the dwarf Pak Choy sprouts. 24 hours and the seed husks are breaking already!
Jeez, overdue was an understatement man! They r gonna take off like a rocket bud! I planted 2 of them dtw's and got 2 seedlings bud. Yours will def sprout!
Awesome news on the DTW's!
Looking great doc. Make sure you snap a pic of them all back in the greenhouse. I can't imagine how they are all going to fit.
Hahaha! See below!

DnR your grow is looking fantastical! That white hab looks really nice. Diggin' the purpling. PODS PODS PODS PODS!
Yeah, the purpling is pretty cool. And it has annuum characteristics. Not sure if it is a cross or if I mixed up seeds in the beginning. We'll see.
Looking good Doc... guess you have your work cut out for you this holiday up-potting. Nice Job!
Thanks, and more work to go!
Holy crap. "monster infinity" from that seed order just plain sounds evil!

Good stuff with the up-potting. I'm jealous of your red rocoto :)
Thanks Stefan. Got lucky with that one. Didn't think it was going to make it initially.
 those roots...
Ha! Looks like something out of DWC!

Were these the same "friends" to whom you served Primo poppers? ;)

OK, brief update. Have to take off for work, soon.

After some more up-potting, this is what the grounds looked like:

Have a great day!

Yup... just as I suspected... chiles are looking great in their new shoes. How much longer before you move the plants outside permanently Doc?

Brent Aka The Doc!! The root structures on those plants are some of the finest I have ever seen. I will no longer show pics of me potting up my babies due to that :liar:

Loving every minute of your grow. It is FAN TAST TIC

Very nice there area you have there Doc, I can see tell that you don't have a Florida style back yard. Pretty soon your going to be swimming in peppers. I'll be interested to see how your White Bullet Hab comes out. I'm growing Peruvian White Habs and I'm interested to see if they're simular.

Have a great week
Bill

Hey DocNrock... amazing root bowls on your plants - All looking absolutely amazing! That is going to be on hell of a bumper crop!
