does anyone take niacin?

niacin(vitamin b3)dilates capillaries, turns skin red, and causes a full body burn. its similar to a burn from a hot pepper but not in your mouth, its all over your skin. it lasts about 20 minutes and it is intense. there are several health benefits but i take them just for the burn, for the sheer thrill of it. they come in 100mg tablets. sometimes i take 3 or 4 for a good stimulating burn. there are some on the market nowadays that are "flush free". thats BS, the "flush" is the best part.

I took some of that after watching a show about minerals and all the great things it does for you. I freaked out once my entire body turned into a burning rash and took some antihistamine Asap. Only to find out later that this is a normal reaction. Cant say I enjoyed the experience at all. I have thought about bringing some to work to leave early, OH MY GOD, I need to go to the doctor lol. I would feel to bad to go to a restaurant and order some shell fish, than take some of that stuff. I will pass on the niacin.

I've used it before.

The furst time I took it, I took 2 tablets and went to bed and fell asleep.

I woke up feeling a bit itchy.

I got up and went to the bathroom, turned on the light and saw the whole upper half of my shirtless body in the bathroom mirror...as red as a lobster.

I was hot and itchy and very red, as if I had a good sunburn.

I was honestly wondering if I was going to have to go to the hospital, but my aversion to doctors made me rethink my plan of action.

I remembered that vitamin B was water soluble, so instead I downed 2 big glasses of distilled water.

A little while later, my skin returned back to normal, which was a bit of a relief at the time.

A few weeks later, I got a couple of friends to try some.

Because it takes about a half hour to forty-five minutes for the effects to kick in, they both forgot that they took the B3.

One friend, who is wound pretty tight, started to freak out a bit when he began the effects of the vitamin, and he was feeling it in his knee and elbow joints first as a tingling sensation.

I had to keep reminding him that the effects were only temporary, and gave him a few glasses of water to help him through it.

But, if you ate some and were not aware of the coming physical side effects, the ensuing experience could be unsettling.

WHY?? to get itchy and pee neon yellow - WTH

I take 500mg daily which is flush free. I took it before once that wasn't flush free. Felt like my skin was peeling off. No thanks.

While recent studies are showing that the USRDA for some vitamins is woefully understated, this is not true for all vitamins. On top of that, an excessive amount of some vitamins can cause poisoning, and even shut-down of body parts - there really is such a thing as "too much of a good thing." I personally know someone who had to be hospitalized because of taking excessive amounts of vitamin C on a daily basis, for example.

In absence of a recommendation by your doctor due to a deficiency, I would urge you to research any vitamin to ensure that you do not exceed a safe dosage before choosing to take it for recreational purposes.

niacin can also be toxic for your liver..... i need mine to process some other fermented vitamins that i ingest.
i get enough itchy skin from our cold dry weather.

Sigh.... I was just trying to explain to some relatives in Houston that the weather is cold and drying here. Couldn't get them to understand AT ALL to what extent I was talking about - all they could come up with was that I needed to use more lotion....

But yeah, I'm with you on that - don't need ANY additional aggravation to the skin this time of year!

Do you take fish oil? I used to get really dry, itchy skin in the winter, with extremely ashy elbows. I've found that since I started taking fish oil on a regular basis my skin never gets dry. I don't even use lotion anymore.

Also, I think everyone should be taking Vitamin D3 in the winter. It plays a vital role in immune system function and a host of other things, and almost everyone is highly deficient in the winter in the northern latitudes. A $6 bottle or two lasts all winter and I never get sick since I started taking it. I don't mean that I rarely get sick...I never get sick. It has been over 6 or 7 years since I had any kind of cold or flu. There have been studies showing that Vitamin D3 supplementation cuts incidences of cold and flu in half, but for me personally, it completely eliminated them. I take about 5,000 IUs per day in fall, winter, and early spring. I also feel a lot better overall in the winter and don't get nearly as much of the winter blues since I started taking it.

I'm not really into the whole vitamin thing, I don't take a multi because my diet is very good. Fish oil and D3 is all I take.

Of course your doctor is going to tell you not to take too many vitamins. That way he or she can pedal some bullcrap wonder pill that is made by the all mighty pharmaceutical companies which control the doctors anyway!

Do you take fish oil?

you think i would, we have tons of it in the house both cod liver oil and salmon oil. we also have udo oil in the fridge, i do use a lot of olive oil and coconut oil. i do take a multivitamin and if i remember a kelp tablet that is loaded with both A & D. plus the wife has vitamin e creams. i bake fish twice a week, either salmon/rainbow trout, then a white fish(basa/cod/sole). We do have a humidifier on the furnace as our climate is extremely dry with low to no humdity.

i did read an article that said if you had only 1 vitamin to take it should be D3.

A lot of research says that cod liver oil is not a good idea because of the high vitamin A content, which interferes with vitamin D. A tablet containing vitamin A and D probably isn't a good idea for the same reason.

There is a lot of information here about vitamin A and D, if you scroll down a little ways: http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/newsletter/2008-december.

Salmon oil is probably the best fish oil to take I think, that's what I use. Krill oil may be better, but it's fairly expensive.

just looked at the multvitamin, it has both A & D and the kelp tablets have 1000 usp of A & 100 usp of D and iodine. interesting that the source of the A & D in the kelp tablets say they are from Fish liver oil-Natural). guessing it occurs naturally in fish liver?

Yeah, I think vitamin D is found in decent quantities in the livers of pretty much all animals, since the liver (and kidneys) convert vitamin D to its active form. 100 USP of vitamin D is a really small amount though. The skin can make up to ~10,000 IUs in 10-20 minutes of strong sun exposure.

Vitamin D is one of the ones studies are indicating are pathetically under-rated on the USRDA list. My doc is suggesting at least 3,000 IU a day of D3 to all his patients, in addition to whatever you get in food.

Sounds like you have a good doctor. They just raised the recommendation from 200 IUs (up to age 50) to 600 IUs (1-70) in 2010, but that's probably still way too low. The 200 IUs was based on curing rickets and not anything else. The new seems only to be based only on bones. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a number of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, along with cold and flu, and also increased total mortality. The medical field is way behind on this one imo...probably because they don't have drug reps taking them out to dinner and pushing vitamin D in their faces.

well depending on the ammount & number of times a day you take that ammount then it could affect your health.
like others have said too much of a good thing can have a bad effect on you.
if you're not a vegetarian or eat any types of grains then you shouldnt have any problem of meeting your needs of niacin/B3 & if in doubt take a multi-vit then you'll be fine.

I beg to differ, some doctors will tell you to take certain V/M/H (vitamins/minerals/herbs) to help for your condition. but you'll have to remember certain V/M/H can bring more harm to the person depending on their condition, but at the same time some can help them alot.
