Update:

overwintered plants are suffering. had to discard 8 of 15. the rest is on life-support but last rites have been read. Afids and fucking soil fly i cant seem to get rid of have don lots of damage.

Newborn Chinense are dooing fine.
Reaper, death spiral and improved naga have sproted and are on there way. Yesterday sown bahamian goat and choc hab. that will be all the Chinese. 1 of feb. the rest will be sown.

pics will come once there is something worth seeing.

In the mean time, have a good one.

Update.

overwintering 5 out of 15 still alive. But the afids are gone.

The nursery has a heat coil topped with shell sand. I keep te soil at 29C. for germination. For now the Chinense sprout in 5 to 7 days

1737282499326.jpeg

after germination the seedlings get moved to the next box which a bit cooler at 22C. Once the sun hits this room in February i lift the domes. I got a fan ready to go but the room is steady at 17C so i don't want to blow cold air over the seedlings.

update on the schedule: still have to count seedlings for germination %

That is for now. Have a good one.

Chinense seedlings struggeling a bit. had to resow the Death Spiral and Dorset Naga.
anyone got a clue why seedlings sprout white and stay white? See bottom right Bahamian Goat. Same seed as bottom second from left.
The are unther a growlight on the lowest setting. The others seem to do oke, so i don't think its the lighting.

I'm down to 4 out of 15 overwintering. Had tot spray once against aphids. They came back and i would not risk the battle again because the plants are not that strong anymore due to last attack of the phids.

Next week i will be sowing the last 12 varieties tot come up tot 37 individual plants this year.

That's it for now. Have another good one.

Update:

Large Rocoto Red
Rocoto de Seda
Rocoto San Isidro

The second sow has almost completely germinated

1738400877898.jpeg

The First sow separated and move to a larger container

1738400969071.jpeg

Turned the grow light up a notch.
I'm hoping to take 35 plants outside in may. Now it's time to start ordering pots and soil and planning the transfer.

Cheers.

Update:

Continued separating seedlings into larger container. The first sow is no longer being heated and will continue to grow in around 18 degrees Celsius. This will be closer to their environment once the transfer outside in the spring.
1739006497728.jpeg

The second sow is still being separated. I keep these at around 22 degrees Celsius.
1739006688722.jpeg

These i will transfer i think next week of the week after.
1739006916841.jpeg

This morning sown the last 2 varieties Padron and Cereo. Cereo did'nt sprout. Found a soil worm munching on the seed. Discarded and resown.
1739007038551.jpeg

Keeping de soil at 29 degrees Celsius seems to work like a charm. Germination rates are around 100% for all varieties and they sprout in about 7 days. Just the Aji Cereo give me troubles at this point. By March i hope to have around 100 plants going. Then reduce to 30 to transfer outside.

Until the next one!
Greeting.

Update:

I've been potting seedlings. i would like to turn op the light but i'm not sure if all the plants can take this. so will wait until all seedslings are in their own pot. Than i can move them around to fit their light recruitment.

So...

first and second sow are now separated and doing fine.

1739608630678.jpeg

the third sow awaits separation next weekend
1739608688568.jpeg

im thinking of a second transfer into a 2 liter container maybe next month. these i recon will be to small to take them well into April. I'm hoping a high 2 liter container will result in a deeper set of roots.

any tip from you guys when you see my plans take form?
'till the next one.

Update:

almost all varieties planted in individual containers. Still to go a dozen padron chilies and the slow to germinate Aji Cereo and Cumari Pollux. Next weekend i should settle on 84 plants. All seedlings seem to do fine hand dont show any stress by re-potting. I watch them like a hawk and kill any afid that turns up. I find one everey couple of days.

1740310362838.jpeg

Yesterday orders 2l pots for the second transfer. I think t will be around 21 of march to transfer. Afther that i plan to do the final transfer outside around 26 of April.

Than i will have to fill:
15 - 25 liter pots
10 - 15 liter pots
7 - 7 liter pots
some extra small ornamental giveaway's.

the weather is starting to pick up so I'm getting more and more exited as the day's go by.

That's it for now.

Until the next one. Cheers.

Update:

Today i transferred the first of the children to a bigger home. The others will follow in the next 3 weeks.
This year im trying 2liter slender pots to see if i can get the roots to go deeper in stead of wider.
1741350183299.jpeg

last week i started fertilizing with tomato fertilizer diluted to half the minimum dilution. once these are established i think i can bump to the minimum dilution. once their outside it's time to turbocharge.

see you all next time.

Potting is under way. 12 to go. Next weekend all de seedlings will have a big container. this week i will be giving away the plants i dont need. Also had chat gpt write me a padron growing contest. i got about 10 seedlings to give out on entering the contest. Lets see what my colleagues make of growing padron peppers.

i am still prepping the pots to go outside. I need some more soil en perlite. I think i am on scedule to transplant outside in about a month. Hoop the seedlings keep up. next watering will have a full dose of nutrients so i am curious to see the effect.

no pictures at this point, next update i plan an taking individual photographs of all the plants.

in the mean time have a good one.

Update:

All plants are doing fine. Im thrilled the to varieties that gave me the most trouble germinating are also on their way (cumari pollux and aji cereo)
taking 37 pictures was a bit to much but here you can see the progress:

today i plan to finish preparing the pots outside. then i just need to by coconut mulch. around the 14th of April i hope to start hardening off. night temperatures around here fluctuate around 5 degrees Celsius. just a bit to scary at this point i.m.o.

The two overwintering plants are setting new leave so I'm confident their gonna be fine. still a couple of aphids but i manage to keep them under control.

Last yeas outside setup was a combination soil and kratky reservoir. I think the transfer inside to complete soil had something to do with the mass death of the plants. Has anyone of you guys ever done this?

Next update will be hardening off

Nice hearing about OW surviving. I have made few mistakes along the way and I think I lost all but 1 xd Maaaybe 3 if the last almost to the ground cut won't get them to grow instead of just survivng until rotting lub drying out xd

You will have them in the garden, not balcony? I learned lately that there are two last frost dates - for the ground and for the air (balcony or pot standing on something else than a ground) in Poland for example they are 1 month apart! 1 month! Do you think about that getting them outside, will 14th of april be the last air frost in your zone or ground frost? I am curious about the topic, I am pretty scared to try it for the first time not to kill them ;<

Ah, and they are looking nice and happy 😇

HOW DID YOU GOT PUBESCENS TO GERMINATE AND ROOT INTO THE GROUND? Omg, I was failing 1 of those step like 5 times. And I really wanted to have some rocotos.

thnx Wiicek,

about the Rocoto's nothing really different than the others i guess...

soaked in tea for two hours
sown 3 seeds in loos mix in a shot glass
germinate under a dome at 29 degrees Celcius
all germinated between 6 to 9 day's after sowing.
after germination transfer to 24 degrees dome with vents open
then transfer separate into individual containers, the same loose mix, non heated 18 degree roomtemp.
started feeding liquid tomato feed 0,25 dose.
just last week transferred to 2l pots with potting-mix, perlite and vermiculite
bumped the fertilizer to 0,5 last week

I've been most careful not to shock the plants. so i keep the water at the same temp as the plant it goes with.
besides the above, 12 hours of cheap led grow lights and playlist Red Hot Chilipeppers.

This has worked for me this year like a char with only Aji Cereo and Cumari Pollux giving me a challenge. But the deno method saved the day for those two.

In the Netherlands the last frost date is official around 15th of may. But this is based on a 100 years of history. I don't think it is going to freeze this spring any more, but i am careful not to stun the plants with 5 degree night temps.

best off luck

Question:

to my opinion my jalapeno's are getting long stems on the leaves and a bit thin leaves.
to me it feels a bit like drooping leaves but the quality of the leaves + hydration does not seem off.

Could the fertilizer have anything to do with this?

I am using organic tomato fertilizer. The label says:
4% Nitrogen
5% potassium oxide
5% amino acids
and bacteria

what do you all think?

Hey, Doc. Looks like you're getting things in good shape for spring! A picture of the jalapeno leaves would help. The way you describe the condition makes me think you might suspect nitrogen toxicity. Perhaps I misunderstand how you are using the word "thin" as that could mean either narrow or flimsy.

Hi CaneDog.

Here are two pictures. I have a couple of plants that show the same.
1743756411634.jpeg
1743756443977.jpeg

top leaves start to sag a little, the stems of the leaves seem long. i got a feeling the leaf cant support its own weight. By thin i mean is feel to me it is not al thick in volume as the others. Also i hope you an see in picture 2 the leaf sides role inwards a little.

water i.m.o. is not the problem. i water once a week and check the soil humidity bij the support stick.
other plants are fine so i don't think its due to an insect or whatever.

the lighting in the room is mid-day/evening sun. this is still a shallow angle so it could explain the higer leaves sagging a bit to catch most light.

yet it feels weird.

so i think nutrition. I stopped feeding for now anyway.

curious what you think.

so what rest is nutrition.

Yep, I also suspect it's too much of the fertilizer, specifically nitrogen. When this has happened to me, it might affect only one or a few plants, suggesting they're the more susceptible ones based on their variety or perhaps unique conditions. Your plan to suspend supplementation seems like a good one. I'd consider a moderate flush of the more affected plants at the next watering (just watering through the container until maybe a 25%-30% volume flows through), provided that wouldn't result in them sitting wet for too long based on your growing medium and environmental conditions. I don't think flushing is necessary or that this has reached serious levels, but the sooner things are balanced again the sooner you'll have optimal performance.

Thnx. Good to know im on the right track.

I'm reluctant to flush because the soil had perlite and vermiculite mixed in. Drenching the soil i think will take to long to dry out .

Because its not getting worst or widely spreading i'll leave them be. I hope to transfer them outside in new soil in 3 weeks anyway.

Would another mix fertilizer be a better one than this one?

have a good one.

Would another mix fertilizer be a better one than this one?
You seem to be considering the same things I would consider. I think not flushing is reasonable in your circumstance. When I re-introduced supplementation, I'd focus on a balance NPK liquid fertilizer or perhaps one with a lower N value, such as 3-4-6 or 3-5-8. Once they re-established balance, I might alternate the balanced or lower N supplementation with your current one so you still get value out of what you have. I commonly alternate between plain watering, watering with higher or predominantly N supplements like fish emulsion, and waterings with more balanced ones, especially when the more balanced ones have a broad spectrum of micronutrient content.

Cheers!
