Dud, or am I a freak

Hello everyone.
My buddy has been growing the ghost pepper and tonight we pulled a red one off and ate it. I've seen the videos and I was very scared but I just had to try it. I cut a small piece off and chewed it a little and swallowed. Heat started to develop and my stomach was burning a little. In the end it was nothing overwhelming. I end up eating the whole pepper. It got hotter and my stomach burned a little more. At time my stomach hurt a lot but after 45 minutes all is almost back to normal. My mouth tings a little my stomach feels slightly upset. I have no nausea.

So my question is, is this pepper a dude that I had or am I just naturally tolerant to it.

Growing conditions. The seeds were planted in the spring on long island. We had high 80's low 90's all summer. The pant had tons of sun light.

I cannot wait to see the feedback on this one. There are a ton of variables there. I would say first and foremost what pepper was it specifically? There are a lot of peppers that are called "ghost pepper" especially if the plant or seed came from ebay. Then you will run into the growing guys that will want details about specific grow conditions, soils, nutrients, etc.

I would start by posting a pic of the pepper so the guru's can identify it.

The Bhut you had may not have been a really hot one or you are a champ! Try a T.S. Butch T or a 7 Pot/Pod Brainstrain and see how you go! Don't forget to video!

sounds pretty hot to me... 45 mins later and your mouth still "tings" and your stomach is upset... ever experienced that with your ordinary jalapeno?

many people might get more stomach discomfort than that from eating a whole raw bhut when they arent used to its heat level, but I have to say, I would consider a pepper pretty damn hot if I could still notice the heat in my mouth 45 mins after eating it.

If it wasnt significantly more painful than a habanero in the first few minutes of actually eating it, it was probably a mild pod... Try a couple more and tell us what you think ;)

I have a friend who can eat those things like candy for some reason. So no, you're not alone.

Personally, I'd rather just have a hab, easier to get and I didn't taste much difference myself.

You guys have got to post pictures of what you are eating. I think you'll love this site. There are so many different habs, each with unique flavors and characteristics. Different bhut jolokias and Naga Morich (both commonly referred to as "ghost peppers), and an infinite number of mild, hot, and superhot varieties that vary in taste texture and heat.

Peppers can vary in heat based on growing conditions and genetics. It's possible that the pods that you ate weren't true bhuts but I think we would need pics of the inside/outside of your pods to make any sort of guess on that.

I'll add one other thing. It's now a good 11 hours after I ate it and my urine stings coming out. JalapeƱos have little if o effect on me.

I was expecting to be in fetal position on the floor but just ended up sweating a little. Maybe it was a weaker veriaal.

I'm going to post the pictures and the video. Thanks!!

This is the pepper a few weeks ago before it turned red.

My friend who grew it bought the plant from the New Mexico Chili Pepper Institute. He is insisting on their providence. LOL

Its the real thing alright. NMCPI won't let you down for sure and that pod looks like a bhut to me. I find that little slivers often seem tame to me but the second I take a real sizable chunk of a superhot I'm reduced to a shivering puddle on the floor :mouthonfire:

It's always different though, I had to wait til my last TSMB of the year before I think I actually hit close to or passed 1M scovilles. That sucker burned.

I ate the pepper in 3 stages, each stage was larger than the last. It was hot but my stomach hurt more than my mouth did. It wasnt unbearable though. Ill try another one when it ripens and will post its effects. I hear growing conditions impact it a lot. Maybe Long Island just produces weak Bhuts. My friend also followed the growing recommendations outlined here.

There is no one on this forum or on youtube or anywhere else on the planet that eats naga morich or bhut jolokia's "like candy".
This lady does. Just look at the top comments "yo son she eatin them things like f#%kin gummy bears or some $h%t," as well as the one about her husband LOL. I have also noticed that while bhut's have an insane burn on the tongue, they burn your throat and stomach more. You might just have a high tolerance.

Okay maybe one person. For every vid posted of her doing that, there are about 200 others posted of people failing on just one or even less.

Powrsurg the honest truth is no one can say either way. The heat can vary from pepper to pepper even on the same plant. There are quite a few on here and you-tube that have video taped them eating a whole pepper or half a pepper freshly cut in half and were able to describe it without dropping to the floor. Next time video the whole thing and put it up for all to watch or get a fresh pod from a member on here then video you eating it whole chewing it for at least 10 sec before swallowing it. If it does not phase you then you have a good tolerance if it does then you are just like most of us. I have watched videos where one or more in a group just swallowed it and did not really chew it up first = mostly burn in stomach not so much in the mouth. I can tell you the burn is accumulative. Eat it in small slices with time in between and it is not as hot as eating it all at once and chewing it up real good before swallowing it. This is the importance of video taping it and showing it before asking others not present when consumed if it was a dud or are you a freak.

If eating them doesn't do it for you, try pulling a "jackass" and put slices up each nostril and shove one up your arse like a suppository!

Onefowl,
These are all god points. I have a video but im sure its not long enough to be conclusive in the publics mind. I willpos it and link it here. I will also eat another one as you suggested and post the video in here as well. If you never hear from me again, assume the first one I ate was a dude. LOL

I find the absolute best way to guess how hot a pod will be is to cut it open and look closely at the insides. If the walls have a lot of membrane and the membrane is covered in oil... look the f out. If there isn't much membrane or the oils seem to be mainly confined near the seeds and less on the walls of the pod it will be a bit more tame. Check out some of chris's photos of his superhots and their insides and you should get a good idea. Other than that the only way to gauge your tolerance is to try a lot of peppers and see how hot they get.

I live in central CT which has similar summers to Long Island but we tend to get higher temperatures by a few degrees since we're further inland. I can tell you I've grown some rippers. This was kind of a cruddy summer compared to last year for growing so I'd say your bhuts probably didn't cross 1M unless you were lucky, but I still had some pods that were killers. My friend took a tiny sliver smaller than a peppercorn (he isn't much of a chili head) and claimed that it was so hot he could literally feel the heat coming out of his ears. Keep eatin those bhuts and I'm sure you'll hit a point where you regret the size chunk you ate. Just takes a lot of pod tasting to get the right one some years.
