Earth Hour -Who's in?

bent - I dont care, got nothing better to right now (not working tommorrow)
me do nothing ? I guess you havent read anything. not alot but something.
what do you do ?

I just find it funny when people think lets not buy gas 1 day or turn the lights off - but nothing else  - for 1 hour is supposed to send a "" powerful message "" to, who ?
then they just go back to their normal routine.

change your ways & your lifestyle, that will speak thousands of words & will send a " powerful message" & last a lifetime vs your 1 hour deal.

I know people having grow rooms are not helping out with the electric problem ;)

you've yet to answer the questions I've asked you.

Yup, it's all about education & getting ppl on board.
1 hour is better than nothing & the next day its in the paper how much $$ the city saved (ppl take notice of that) and hopefully ppl start paying a little more attention to what they're doing.

I say talk it up. Sign on (link in first post) so that they know how many people will be joining in, even if your city isn't on the list. be a part of it & help create the culture that's necessary.

For me, I have a 4 cyl car, energy saver lights throughout my house, gas stove. Getting a part at a time to go solar but thats a way off yet, careful what I buy in the way of detergents, electric appliances etc.

I'll also be pulling the main fuse of my place for an hour at 8pm March 29.

I live in the country so its pretty much pitch black anyways, except for the utility pole light in the yard.

1st the city wont save any money, why ? well if the electricity is needed or wanted they will not shut down for a peace loving save the world 1 hour of darkness. no one saves except your wallet on the electric bill, which is very small maybe about .25 -.50 cents

no I'm not gonna sign up, change way of life will speak thousands of words vs a 1 hour deal.
plus my state is never short on electricity.

are you gonna send $5 to feed the hungry in africa ? or at least a local food shelf.

well its not about being short of electricity is it. Its about pouring buckets of garbage into the atmosphere. Most city folk though will only recognise a $ value.

But hey, you can't live without it for 1 hour to make a statement, thats up to you.

& I got hungry mouths here to feed...speaking of which....time for Thai tree pumpkin soup & Maryland chicken a la Stillmanz Jerk sauce.

mmmmmmmmmmmm

toxins in our atmosphere, soil, water will happen no matter what, by many companys. 1 hour will not turn the clock back by a decade.

quote " But hey, you can't live without it for 1 hour to make a statement, thats up to you."

just like you cant forego food for 1 day to make a statement or give to a food shelf.

when 1 issue is only hurting your wallet, while another issue could mean life or death!

dont get on me about saving the world crap.

*Sigh* ok wont be saving the worlds ills. Happy now CH.

Back to the original point...Who IS in...and I don't need to know why. And if you're not thats fine too.

Well they say the goal is to reduce 5% of Tel-Aviv's power plant load.
Even if all the 170 people are from the Tel-Aviv area (and they're not, because I know I'm not), that's still just 0.014% of the population. also most of the power goes to skyscrapers and plants, not houses.

They're going to ban incandescent light bulbs here, that should make a heap of difference. An ecological solution to air-conditioning is really going to change things though.

Ban incandescent light bulbs??? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I cannot read under fluro's, the glare, also I can see the flicker!! Have epilepsy! What do I do? Get HPS? MH? Much friendlier, get a tan while I'm at it.

RS

a long flouro flickers...the short curly energy savers will be o.k...just start them 5 mins early, they take a little time to 'warm up' to bright light.

White LED's should be the next generation, been waiting for them for years now. That will be a big change in power consumption.

Frog in slowly heating water comment

Bent,

I get your point about education, but this "powerful message" is more communicating to those that sign up, or watch the 6 pm news (2 things I generally won't/don't do), which tends to appeal to society's LCD and I would consider it similar to jingoism, but in an eco way. I have made changes to my energy use, which is more important.

Speaking of using less energy, it is important to remember the costs of getting food to your home. To really make a difference to CO2, consider eating produce grown locally when in season (when possible) rather than those from distant lands. For instance, if you live in Canada, don't buy Australian lamb. The fuel used to get it there is horrendous. Also, dont buy bottled water. It pollutes the most for something that is relatively cheap out of the tap. (Unless, of course, you live in North Battleford, Saskatchewan!)

CH, Yes! Change the way a person lives is more important to the environment than change for an hour.

The other thing with electricity is that the generators are still going to produce the baseline load for that hour. Wont produce any less CO2 because they'll just keep shovelling in the coal! (We haven't gone noo clee errr here.)

RS

LEDs are actually not that efficient. HIDs are the future (at least near future). solid state tech is still a baby.

screw it...it doesn't matter what is, what shall or should be. well o.k we've a good idea of what it should be.

Take out 1 hour of this month & make it known you're serious about change.

Argue the details later.

Yeah, I try and do all the things that I can. I drive a 4 cylinder car, use compact fluorescents, keep lights turned off that I don't need, use cloth shopping bags, etc. I would *love* to have some solar, but it's too expensive right now. Next time I roof that house, though, I'm going to try and at least get some passive solar collectors. I could probably cut my heating costs in half. I'm in the process of shopping for a new refrigerator, and it will be a energy efficient one. It won't be some 25 sq ft behemoth that has twice as much space as I need.

I've been surprised at how, hmm, antagonistic is probably too strong a word, but certainly I've taken flack for talking about wanting a refrigerator that's as green as I can afford. I say that it has to be Energy Star compliant, and friends, family, and co-workers all vigorously argue against considering the energy usage of an appliance I'm going to be using for years. I'm accustomed to getting a lot of poo pooing of my green concerns, you wouldn't believe the mocking I get for using cloth shopping bags, but Energy Star compliance saves money!
