What stops you getting the usual root bound problems?

Cutting the tap root will prevent rootboundedness.

That is really really cool! I am a little bummed though because I was thinking about trying this next year (I still am going to) and thought that this was an idea that I came up with. Now, I see that people have been doing this for a while now.
