Glass-blowing project

Patrick, it was $65 for a glass ball float, one of the simplest projects. Customers could choose a heart $75, large float $95, fluted bowl $135.
thanks for your well wishes~

Someone was making a fluted bowl while we were there and 'Kid took a couple pics-

I love creative projects, I can see how a person could succomb to the joy of pottery or glass. i tried pottery with the 'Kid for a few years in grade school. It was fun, but I immediately feel more of a connection to glass than clay.

So they charge by the project and not the time involved? Makes sense. Thanks for the responses, looking forward to the pics!

Cool pics. Like I said I'm kind of a nerd at this but never took the first step to get into it. I've been checking on local classes and there are several places that have them. I may have to finally take the plunge. Thanks for the inspiration!

Yes, Patrick, the "classes" are offered for the tourons. They probably have a series of glass-blowing lessons, but these are one-shot occasions to allow people to make 1 item and experience glass blowing.

This section of the Oregon Coast has a history of finding authentic glass fishing net floats, and they've capitalized on that by commissioning local glass artists to make numbered glass floats that are descretely placed on the beaches for people to "find". The floats are numbered and the Chamber of Commerce keeps track of all the "found" floats.

This glass art studio offers customers the chance to make their own float or other glass project. Dean, a local retired guy who was there just taking pictures, said they'd hosted the governor, and many other semi-famous people trying their hand at blowing glass.

Sick as I am.....I'm REEEEALLLY tempted to go make a fluted bowl tomorrow.............

That's a great story about the fishing net floats, got to love creative people!

I may just do this. Thanks for the encouragement both of you.

Interesting side note-

At the end of our session, the camera battery went dead, and I commented to Otto about that. He said that MANY clients find their camera, cell phone, vidcam batteries go dead in a hurry. They have some pretty big electrical panels in the area firing the kilns.....

Wow - what a fascinating adventure SL!!!!!

Thanks a bunch for sharing it!!! What fun!

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well Chica....feel better soon!

Ever find anything to spice up that wine with?! When are you coming home anyway???????????????????????? You've been gone FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

CJ, after the first couple swigs of deconjestandt and a couple glasses of wine, I'm feeling Much Better! probably won't feel so hot in a few hours, so thanks for your thoughts. Just have to re-wine/re-drug again....

We're traveling Sunday.

Wanna go home.....

Didn't know that, very cool ... I've found my glass floats in the Bahamas but when I was younger. I only found one on the USA coast as a teen with the net still on but from what I've researched about this one it could be from Spain. I'd take a shot of them if you have any interest but believe me, they're no work of art ;)

From what I understand ( and I could be wrong...I often am...) The Oregon coast gets lots of flotsam from the Pacific, and many things from the Orient show up. They used to regularly find floats from Japan or other Oriental countries. I believe they still do OCCASIONALLY find Oriental floats, but not often.

The Finished Products!

Evan's float has blue, green, and black, Mine has reds, orange and yellow. The chile peppers is the one I traded 4 bottles of sauce for. (WIN!) They're actually quite large, about 6-7" diameter.

 They do float, but they are surprisingly heavy. Not sure I'd want to konk into one of those in the hot tub.

Evan did his with a flat base to set on a shelf, I did mine with a hook, to hang out in the kitch. I have a chunk of copper pipe, been thinking of cutting a chunk off and put a nightlight bulb in the base for Evan's piece. It needs light to really see the colors. It's kind of a dark piece, but with light it shows really nice.

Wow! very beautiful SL! Do they float?
They would be cool bobbing around in the Hot Tub.
lol

My balls are heavy too but I chalk that up to being glass, as the walls are thin IMO so they're probably lighter than home blown but then again I found mine at sea and didn't blow them myself  ... dam this sounds dirty :D give me a few minutes and I'll shoot pic's and edit this post ... but they're not as stunning as yours are :/

I've never seen any other than flat like Even’s, even some of my friends with huge collections (all found at sea) but I do like the hook idea :)

Edit: Sorry bout delay ...

Two in back were found at sea, one off the FL coast and the other in the Bahamas, I just found out the kids broke my big one which was also found in the islands :/ the one upfront with the hole in top is my pottery rendition and the hole is because I use to hang it via rope like the foam ones till my better half made me take it down, lol.

Here you can see the size compared to my hand, the larger one that was missing broke was around the size of a basket ball :/

well, at least your balls are real, not just for decoration. ;)

bummer about the missing broken one. Larger balls are hard to find.

Thanks Patrick, I know I've said it before, but it was a fun time.

I'm guessing now a days it's almost impossible to find these floats, so WG checks google here. Funny the light purple one I found was still rigged to a broken net similar to the pic in wiki. I think most of the fishermen that used glass for the low cost at one day must all be using foam balls by now. I use to have loads of the foam ones too but narrowed down my collection, I'll try to take some pics soon but they're not as beautiful as yours or the rest of the oceans hidden glass ball treasures ...

So SL, did you have "The" conversation about some custom made creative bottles for colecter editions of your sauces? I have a friend in San Antonio who owns his own Glass Blowing studio and that's one thought I've had if I were ever to take my sauce making to the next level.
